I've seen some CF going dirt cheap on ebay lately. I've also read a few "caveat emptors" about (some of) it. Anybody have any experience, good or bad, and which companies to watch out for?

Cpt. Kirk:
I recently acquired a Buell X1 carbon fiber front fender. Since reading your letter I went out into my garage and checked it out on my X1 front end. I'm building a Frankenstein M2 with X1 fuel injection system and it will be a while [several weeks] before I get it assembled and on line. It looks as though the 6mm screw holes on the fender line up with the holes on the forks. I am missing a couple of plastic spacers and 2 screws. The holes were slightly undersized but nothing a small round file or drill can't take care of. The fender looks kind of thin but I have nothing to compare it with as this is my first carbon fiber item. I don't know how well it will hold up since I can't test it out. It does look real good on the appearance surface with no flaws. The company is eBargainLLC. I hope my report answers your question.

My buddy got a fender for his RC51. Had a few glitches in the weave pattern but not really stand-out noticable. The mounting holes didn't line up so he heated it (with a hot-air gun) and bent it to fit. A scary procedure to watch but it was only fifty bucks. And it worked, in the end. Don't know which company. The chatter here on the web would make me leery of the tank covers. If they don't fit, you're pretty much hooped, I think.

I've got one of their rear fenders on my S3. The mounting holes were small, just like Kdkerr2 said. The quality was very good IMHO.

Captain:
I bought the carbon tank cover and trim panels
(replace scoop and air box (X1)
finish was fair, fit was poor, delivery was horrible. LOST $125$ to a co that folded up, E-Bay was no help,
In order to make the tank cover work i had to cut and file on the cover and the lowers,
the finish is wavy, with all kinds of surface flaws If you have read threads I started you know that it's a gamble. the E-Bargain LLC has been at it at least 30 days.
and there have been comments about the quality there as well both good and bad
I'm wantin' a fender but I think that I'll get it from Al at American Sport Bike when I do.

Either way Cap'n Good Luck

PS If any one is interested heres a link to the origianl thread on the subject,
Not trying to be an A$$ about this Just want to save some one some grief YMMV

Thanks Oldog you saved me the trouble of finding that link. Overall I'm happy enough with the looks of my tankcover. As long as you get the cf at a price that makes the extra effort worthwhile.

Your welcome Steve,
You know I just really hated to see any one get took. How has your cover held up mine feels like its getting rougher I may put the plastic one back on (or buy one from E-bay and paint it to suit)
I saw an X1 in Topeka KS Tue AM the guy had the CF lowers, the fit was worlds better than mine
probably American Sport Bike stuff. I did not get the chance to talk to him. He had a mikuni flatslide and a pipe
on his bike I wanted to ask if he had numbers on the set up it sounded good.

Cf is holding up fine. I would like to add the lowers and an air filter setup sometime in the future. Right now I'm looking at a bald rear tire and a broken central air system in my house. $$$$$$$$$$$.

Thanks for the input. I know the stuff Al sells is top-notch...just a little pricey. But ya gets what ya's pays fer, I guess. I saw a CF chin fairing go (to one of us Badwebber's, if I'm not mistaken) for around fifteen bucks, including shipping; no kidding!!! (a $399.00 value!!!) Just wondered if it's worth it when all is said and done;re: fit & finish.

It is tempting for sure! My parts have not cracked but the finish is real rough and seems to be getting worse, I had to apply lots of force to put the left lower trim on, and a small gap between it and the cover exists ( the bra covers it )

I saw a comment about having multiple paint sets, actualy sounds like fun, If I could get the stuff DIRT cheap and it fit half way decent I might think about it and then treat it like fiber glass, If you read the descriptions of the latest stuff its got fiber glass in it,
the biggest thing was I got burnt and don't want to do it again

The deal on it just fair the lowers were $125 the cover was $85
I actualy purchased a second set that I never recieved

Cap'n If you decide to buy use pay pal and I would be interested in how you make out

good luck

!!!WARNING ABOUT THE EBAY DEALER!!!

I bought a rear seat cowl and it did not even come close to fitting! In fact it was made specificly for a one piece carbon tail section. I tried to get my money back but got the run around big time. There is also something hinky going on as I have seen the same brand carbon under three different accounts. The first account had significant negative feedback with-in a month of their debut AND all of the "bidders" were hidden. They are still playing that game.

BE VERY CAREFULL WITH THE PEOPLE ON EBAY SELLING CARBON FIBER!!!! It is also of dubious quality.

I purchased the tank accents for my X1 from E-Bargain. When I first recieved them, I was not impressed, but after I made the holes a bit larger, I was able get them to fit good.

The total shipped was 90.00, which is fractions compared to the good stuff; but you get what you pay for.

You can now get these same pieces from the same seller for much less, just don't expect perfect for what you are paying for.

My friend just purchased a carbon chin fairing for his M2, I will post results after he gets it mounted.

..I never got my chin fairing, and they cashed the MO and never sent anything nor did they answer emails...They peddle ALOT of crap on ebay, so Ebay has been zero help because they dont want to lose thier cut. They go by a few names every few months, "EbargainLLC" "Dixo" "3aWholesale"
"02sports" "madsen productions" etc etc..They are easy to spot auctions- they just move some of the images around and use the same text and clipart. Poor fitting parts, zero customer service- don't bother-save the money and buy from American Sportbike- All the carbon I've bought from big Al has looked like it was made by NASA.

...just a little follow up- I don't see them peddling crap and ripping people off anymore, plus I got a scary ass email from a guy who got ripped off by them big time and was trying to find the culprits so he could go to the place of business and kick someone's ass.

Ebay is becoming over-run with these type of crooks, scam artists, larcenous a-holes and generally dishonest sellers. After years of deteriorating trust I have recently closed my eBay and Paypal accounts. I have found there dispute resolution and Buyer Protection to be increasing worthless and a complete joke. Your mileage may vary, and always consider the source.

Ditto for me, with Ebay & Paypal! (Both the same company, actually!)
I was a buyer/seller for years with a 99.8% positive rating with over 600 transactions.
I ran into a few problems with both buyers AND sellers and the most frustrating thing is; there is absolutely no way to contact Ebay by telephone! After several failed attempts over the course of months, to resolve things with their useless online service, I gave up and no longer have any dealings with them at all.
My theory is Ebay will fold in the not too distant future, because they do business like selfish, ignorant ass holes!

Ebay buyer protection program is OK for buyers, not so great for sellers, same with Paypal. Both only if you pay be credit card. I sell plenty on Ebay. Buy too. I look at it like this, if something is cheap enough, I'll buy it and eat it if I don't like it, i'll sell it for what I paid or maybe a little less. I always pay by cc or Paypal, that way you can at least get your money if you build a good case, Paypal only reimburses if you don't receive, they don't care if you receive it and it's crap. Buyer beware is what they preach, if you don't like it leave negative feedback.
Personally, if you want something like bodywork where quality or lack thereof is very apparent, spend the money for the good stuff.
If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

The chin fairing I bought last year that I'm just now getting around to putting on had to have four of the holes drilled out but fit decent after that, the flyscreen isn't even close, total crap! the tank cover was off a bit and has tabs on the front corner for the side fillers that I can't make any reason out of and they don't line up worth crap. The hole for the gas cap and the gasket is too big, there are spots on some of the pieces that are just black and it all came to me with stone chips/scratches included which will save me some time from doing it myself. The front fender didn't line up too bad and was probably the best piece I got from them. Outside all that it looks good after a few beers from a distance. Ya get what you pay for and for the price, if you don't mind being frustrated with a poor fit and some blems in the weave it ain't bad for the money, if you want something that is going to fit right without modification, stay far far away. Just my $.02 worth.
