i read your archive posts re: sheared exhaust stud sauaga, and need some help. i sheard the front left head bolt, and before reading all the posts on here, an easy-out is snapped inside the bolt. i know your case was an exhaust stud, but its more or less the same. what exactly did you do. i looked on the dremel website, and i wasn't sure which diamond tiped bits yer talking about? anyones help would be greatly appreciated!

cheers!

I got them at Home Depot or Lowes. I think I used both the cone shaped and the ball shaped head. It took forever.

Carbide drill bits supposedly work also, I don't know much about them, I am just a hack at this stuff that posts a lot.

The exhaust header stud was one I would be more comfortable "hacking" like I did. It uses a crush washer and a big collar, so if the bolt does not align exactly right it is not a big deal. I have no idea how it would work for a head, when you drill out the old bolt (after you manage to get the easy out out) you don't have much margin for error.

The dremel bits were not magic, and I would in fact just call them barely sufficient. A machinist (or even somebody less of a hack then I am) would probably have a better approach...

Kahuna, I recommend you pull the head and drill it out using a drill press to make sure the alignment is right and also to get the pressure you're gonna need even with carbide. Or pull the head and take it to a machine shop or engine shop. Also, a few folks have had luck using left-hand drill bits and snagged it back out that way but it is rare. They use some kinda purple "never budge" lock tite on those puppies. While the head is off, it's a good time to examine the valves too.

Kahuna - Heat will make Loctite give up. If part of the stud is exposed I would heat it as hot as I could get it with a propane torch, as it cools down (still way too hot to touch) give the base of the stud occasional spurts of PB Blaster penetrant (get that at Napa or any good auto parts store). At first it may cook off from the heat, eventually some may wick down into the thread and ease removal. If one or two threads are above the cylinder, sometimes you can TIG weld a nut to the stud and unscrew it. If you do that, I'd still douse it with PB Blaster. Good luck!

K,

I'm going to get hold of Brian this week and see if he's willing to try and remove the mess on one of his edm machines.

We need to remove the head as a next step....

ciao,
L
