Okay- a few months ago, my heat shield broke off from my header. It scratched up the pipes somethin' fierce. I can't even come close to affording new pipes or even a jet hot coating (which I think I eventually want) but the pipes just looked ugly. So I went against convention, which just happens to be right across the street from a Home Depot, and bought a couple of cans of Rust-o-leum high heat grill paint. That was 600 miles ago. It seems to be holding up pretty well. :)

Can anyone give me some advice for the white bros. and the daytona BOSS systems. I'm considering putting one of these on my 99 X-1,with the updated mount. Will these pipes fit with the new mount? I read in the archives about the BOSS mounting woes with the new mount. Anyone know where I can pick up an e-series in the orlando area?

I had no problems mounting up the Boss with the new front mount.
With the new mount, the grommets slide side to side in the bracket. I made a shorter metal spacer for between the tabs of the pipe bracket to increase clamping pressure in the pipe. The grommets just slid a bit more to the center and all was well.

Yeah, let's see that pic... I'm really leaning towards the BOSS, since I've read alot of good things about it on this site, and it's somewhat locally made(Sebastian FL is about 1.5 hr from me). I talked to a parts guy at Daytona HD last night and he said it wouldn't work with the new mount..but then again I did call there during bike week, I'll stop down there next week. I had to grind out the inner bracket hole on my wileyco just to get it to fit into the new bracket, so it'll do for now.

Anyone running the White Bros. E-series on a 2001 X1? I'm trying to install mine this frigid morning (upstate NY) and am having just a tiny bit of trouble L. As in it fits..... almost.

Let me back up, the exhaust Part# 07857, the bike 2001 X1 (only mods are race ecm and buell race airbox kit). I am trying to mount the exhaust without the Z bracket. (the exhaust billet mount goes in the outboard Z bracket mount)

The front mount misses by about 1/8". And the body of the exhaust clears the primary drain by maybe an 1/8". I have some pics available at:

Matt: looked at your pictures. Have you loosened up all bolts and fasteners on the entire exhaust system? If not give it a try. Trying to mount a slip-on without "re-adjusting" the rest of the system has been known to break header studs etc.

Thanks for your confidence in my muffler-mounting capability! I think I must have bought a #91424-99YA muffler. It's got no part #'s on it, but it does have that cool little safety cable thingy-would that make it the later version (and therefore unsuitable for my S1 application)?

Henrik,

Yeah, I loosened the whole thing for fitting. I also wiped down each slip fit with some oil to make the rotating thing easier.

I have it fitted pretty well now (check out http://www.mbsween.com/buell/exhaust.html). My only concern is how close the can is to the primary drain. Its practically touching (there's a 1/16 or so).

Is this normal for the E-series?

I've got the pic's, but I'm having problems with my USB CF card reader!
It crapped out right in the middle of pulling the pic's!
I think the reader fried. I'll have to install my camara software on my son's PC and pull it that way. (Camara software doesn't like the USB ports on my PC, that's why I bought the reader. Damn thing has worked perfect for months).

Ok,
That's better! Just needed a bigger hammer!
First, yes I know the bikes dirty! It's also about 30 deg in the garage. Water doesn't like that too much! Makes the cleaning thing a bit hard.

First pic is close up of front mount. The marks in front of the clamp on the pipe are from a too loose clamp. That's why I wanted to shorten the middle spacer.

Second pic is so you can see the whole thing. I need to remount again as I feel it's too close to the oil drain plug.

Donn, Thanks again for the deal on the pipe. I promise I'll have better pics of the powder coated cases (both sides) as soon as the weather warms up a bit and I can wash the beast..

BTW, the spacer I used was picked up at the local hardware store. They have a small selection of chrome doo-dads, acorn nuts, etc.
I didn't have anything handy to use, I got lazy and bought chrome!
It's about 3/16 to 1/4 shorter than the stock spacer.

Matt: I think most pipes are quite close to the primary drain bolt. You could "modify" the pipe, like the stock version, with a bit of ball pein hammer work :)

Also Petey, Brad I found that the oldstyle front bushing sold by ASB 5929 - Exhaust Bushing
95-01 - Exhaust Bushing, Urethane, Front Lower, ASB
Price: $19.95 is an exact fit for the spacer on the new Y mount. I like the higher durometer Urethane from Tat vs the factory much softer rubber. It has a steel spacer also but the Urethane will dampen out vibrations and help keep the bolts from vibrating out.

Hey i just gotta say this. i just bought the new D&D Exhaust full system and im way impressed the sound is awesome made me relize this is a harley after all. it looks great and the boost in power was amazing. changed my whole outlook on the bike. i just got it though and was wandering if anyone had any info on tuning that might make it even better.

Hey Blake i see what you meen about the profile. Can you tell me how to fix that im not seeing it. The bike is a 2001 X1 and it's fuel injected. Also now it's starting to back fire and run realy ruff. The instructions say somthing about a scanalyzer to re zero the throttle position sensor. THE DEALERS IN THE AREA ARE FULL OF IT! They keep changing stories an prices from $30.00 to $150.00 for that service. Im so sick of getting screwed around by these guy's. You try to be nice and they just ignore ya. Whoops got on a rant there. Feel better :-} anyway thanks.

Sandman -

Did you replace the ECM? If not no need to reset the TPS, it's already set. It is required at your 1st service if I remember correctly. Check the service manual, I think TPS & static timing need set at 500 miles?

Have you done anything on the intake side of the bike? A good air filter/assembly and the race ECM are most of the tuning that can be done to a FI bike without much more expense. They will make a big difference and should probably be done if you put that exhaust on the bike, should cure the coughing and rough running also.

The TPS will need reset after installing the race ECM. It's a 20 minute job for the dealer with a Scanalyzer. Search the KV for many opinions about the TPS reset. I stand by 20 minutes until "anonymous" gives more info.

Thanks guys. I guess it would help if i read everything thats right in front of my face.I checked the boxes thinking i was making the info availible.And yes i did put the buell race ecm and air cleaner asembly with k&n filter on it. Was wondering if i put the original ecm back on for now would it run straight till i can get it to a shop for the scanalizer service. or have i already screwed up the setting.

Muffler for Race header:

I've been looking for a muffler to run with my race header. I need solid build and longevity. Can't have the muffler fall off or "run out of" packing during a 3000 mile trip :)

1: Buell Pro can - I have one, post recall - new in box, but am worried that it'll fall off, even after the recall. I also go longer distances, and the packing doesn't last long.

2: D&D: new in market. Looks like it's solidly built, but I'd rather have someone else do the long term testing.

3: Supertrapp IDS: I just got off the phone with Supertrapp; They will sell the new style rear mount by itself, so the older IDS (short inlet) or their universal muffler could be made to work. I'd need the 2 1/2 inlet, 16" long version.

Any thoughts?

I also heard that you can modify a White Bros 2.5 to work with the race header but I cannot verify that to be a fact. I have an as yet unistalled D&D on my shelf and I can tell you that it is built like a tank!!

I've been speaking with Clampco (www.clampco.com). The Supertrapp bracket in it's entirety, complete with the two T-bolt clamps AND the bracket, is built (and designed) by Clampco. They actually do the bend and the spot welding that captures the T-bolt AFTER they've fed the band thru the black bracket. If one of your T-bolt clamps fail, you replace the whole assy. Yuk, that isn't good, T-bolt clamps have been known to fail.

But no wonder we were all stumped on how they assembled it. They cheated!

I have the same question as Henrik. Henrik, sounds like if the pro-series can will fit a race header, that will be the way I'll go. Either that or the D&D. I'm just not thrilled with the aesthetics of the D&D. I'm also toying with the idea of simply cutting the elbow from my Borla and massaging everything to make it fit with a race header. I really like the Borla.

I didn't ask them, but I suspect the answer is no, they build it specifically for Supertrapp. Supertrapp almost HAS to sell it alone, for those that break one of their straps, since the straps alone can't be replaced.

However, it wouldn't help you. The hemispherical end of the Boss prevents the bands from grabbing the can. In fact, Donn sent me some pictures of his Stainless Specialties race muffler mounted on his bike, and I'm back to the drawing board. My little bracket that I designed before doesn't get the bands far enough forward to grab the non- hemispherical portion of the can. I could offset the bracket more, but too much of it would be above the hemispherical portion, just kinda floating in space. It would look stupid. I think I need to design a bracket that doesn't interface with the stock Z bracket, but rather goes right to the isolator mounts in the swingarm block, more like the V&H bracket, except for instead of bolting to the rear of the can, it straps to it like the Supertrapp bracket.

Brad, can you send me a digital photo like the same ones that Neil posted in response to my request? I want to see where the end of the hemispherical portion of the STOCK daytona boss muffler is. I've got where it ends on Donns race can. Might as well make this bracket work for everyone. send to alighton@adelphia.net, or post it here, if you can.
