I would not characterize the SE II cam performance as "moving the powerband". There is a bit more on the top (ca. 5 HP) but in the same general rpm range as the Lightning (SE I) camset. Off the line is a bit weaker but that would be from idle to 2000 rpm.

Who starts off at idle anyway:-}

I had the seII's for a while...made 100+ hp and over 86ft'lbs in almost all of my 74ci combinations. Here are a couple of dynos with the seII's

Gray line = 98 s1 stage 2 nallin head work with bad ring seal and a broken valve guide...see the dip in the top of the curve..

Red line = 98 s1 stage 1 nallin with all the good bolt ons

Blue line = 96 s2 same motor combo without se lifters

All these had the seII cams...i compared these to other dynos with stock cams and these bikes all had higher hp and tq from idle to redline than most anything i had seen at the time...2-3 years ago...

You will also note that the big valve improves the complete powerband and puts to rest the myth that big valve will hurt you down low.

Torqd, I'm impressed by the grey trace. Exactly what I want for my M2. What's the ignition system and what's the rev limit set to? Any problems with valve to valve, valve to head clearance? Any head skimming to up the compression ratio?......... I'm full of questions??? Thunderstorm or Hurricane pistons?.....

The gray line is an overlay of my last 74ci combo...it was big valve nallin heads, hurricane pistons, 536 seII cams, se lifters(i have for sale), Buell Race kit - ignition, SE adj curve ignition, small head shaving(can't remember)I ran it 7-7500rpm. The dyno was done on a hurt motor...it should have made more...108+ from similar setups. I Accidentally broke it in on synthetic oil and it had no ring seal...lost all oil in 500 miles on my way to homecoming. Then when i took it apart it had a broken valve guide...Brian said that when he took out the valve it crumbled into pieces..I was lucky that it didn't happen riding the bike. Anyway have fun. Let me know if anymore ?'s

How dependable is it. Does the duel stage rev limiter work without popping while staged. Is the software good. Did it affect your tach.Have you tried other systems?

Has anyone ever dynoed a stock '96 S1? i've ported my lightening heads and milled them .025. I also run a 2.5" collector. I'm still running a CVK40 with 195 main, N65c with a .030 shim an a 42 slow speed jet. Bellow 3 grand its fat as stink, any roll on and the A/F goes to approx 9:1. I think whats' happening is that the ve has improved so much that the slide is lifting prematurly and when the accelerator pump is included in the mix, its' drowning the motor.

Crane has a "Soft Touch" rev limiter that prevents 'popping'. Crane also has a new system that attaches to a computer for adjustment.

Take the shim out, move to a 45 slow and 2.5 turns on the mix. This set up works good at 1000 ft elevation.

The unit has been operating on my bike for several years and over 20,000 miles. I have not played a lot with the soft touch rev limiter feature but I do have it engaed. Can't tell much difference from stock. The sofware is Ok, my biggest complaint is that it does not allow you to print the graph. If you use the single fire option it will speed up your tach by 2. A singe fire trigger wire for the tach is supplied. W/o the proper pin extractor you will have (as I had to do) to mutilate the connector in order to fish out the wire going to the tach. I have noticed ocassional fuctuations in the needle likely caused by a missed signal but the motor (that is the trigger to the coil) is not affected.

If I had to do it over again I think I would try the V-thunder because it fits all inside the "points" cover. But I suspect this other module has less features.

Torqd, If you are using the Buell Race ignition, how do you get past the rev limit? As I remember, it is set to 6700?

Swede: The race limiter is set to 6800 like stock limiters (excluding pre-'97 and '97/'98 Cyclones which were set to 6500 rpm?). I think Torqd has an adjustable SE unit that allows him to increase the limit if he wants.

Question to those of you running a big bore engine.
I have built an engine using the 3 13/16 cylinders. Compression is 10 to 1. Heads are ported with big valves. SE .536 lift cams. I am going to run a Mikuni 42 carb.
Could those of you with a similar setup please advise as the the carb jetting you are running?

Some have been interested in the Max T Engines 4-valve heads that I purchased, late last year. I had attempted to mount these heads on my 1998 S1W. This is just a post to let some of you know what has been happening. Basiclly, my 4-valve project has gone in the toilet. I have had second thoughts about it and have already bailed on it. I problems started when I opened the box and saw that the front head did not have a mount. We then had pushrod and pushrod tube issues (unavailable for a month or so). With the stock displacement the gains did not meet my expectations. I can get more power without the mounting issues. The latest was a problem with the piston machining. My bailing on this is in NO WAY a reflection on Jeff Starke or Max T Engines. Jeff has been great throughout the whole process. He has offered to replace the pistons at his cost and has gone out of his way to help us. As the owner/operator of the bike I decided to stop everything and recover as much as I can from it monetarily. Part of it is due to the shop I have doing the work! I've learned a great deal from it and educated myself in the process. The 4-valves are still the way to go, I believe, if you are willing to increase the bore and properly beef the motor. The question in my mind is the front mount. I am not willing to weld anything to the head casting. The engine moves in the fore and aft plane and could, maybe, perhaps, you get different answers depending on who your talking to, break a bolt or two. I am not willing to trash my bike to find out. I drew a line in the sand and crossed in once and could not bring myself to do it again. Anything is possible if you throw enough money at it. If I had more confidence in my shop I might have stayed with it. I don't! I just have to many question and not enough answers. If I don't sell the heads I will probably look into using them on another bike. Maybe a Sportster where the front mount is not an issue. That's more than likely the way I'll use the 4-valve heads. A fire breathing dual carbed 89" 4-valve Sportster doesn't sound to bad. Maybe I'll put them on a Sportster engined/FXR frame bike. We'll see!

Thanks, Ralph. No ouch though! I have already bought the Nallin 1250cc Big Bore kit and his new Stage 3 heads. I WILL be putting IR dual Mikuni carbs on this setup at a later date. Everything I have purchased will work with these parts. Jeff Starke gave me all of my money back on the pistons and piston work. Over $300. The pistons belong to him now. He's a great guy. The Jims HydroSolid lifters, S&S adjustable pushrods and the new pushrod tubes will also work. I have a new ThunderHeart ignition that will also work. As I said, now was the time to get out from under it. I feel like a giant weight has been lifted off me. If I sell the 4-valve heads GREAT, if I don't GREAT! I do not admit defeat by quiting with the Buell! I'm just looking in a different direction. Probably not a Buell. Probably a Large Bore Sportster. I didn't lose anything I still have the heads. I'm not independently wealthy but $1700 isn't going to break me. I did toss $40 worth of solid pushrods into a big garbage can earlier today when I pick up my stuff at the shop. No biggy!

Hey everyone. I love this site, problem is once I start reading I can't seem to stop. I'm becoming more interested in Buells and I presently have an 2002 XL 1200 Custom that I'm fitting with Millenium Tech 88ci cyliders, Wiseco dished pistons, SEII cams, 1.745 Jims roller rockers, while keeping the heads stock. I sent the flywheels to Sun Tech for installation of their Balancemaster. They sent it back without the Balancemaster installed because they said it had the Buell flywheels and the rim did not have enough metal thickness for them to cut a groove.
Does the Sportster have the same flywheel as a Buell?

Up to now I would have said "No, the fly wheels are different". I guess we may have to change that. The S2 used stock flywheels. The S1, S3 and M2 had fly lightend by reducing the diameter about a quarter of an inch and the width three sixteenths. The X1 had them lightened even further (as may the '99 and later S3 and M2). But then again, I could be a great big, long haired liar. Give me the dimensions of your flywheels and I'll check them up against the set I have here.

I take it you are the original owner of the bike?

Keeping the heads stock? On an 88"? NONONONONONO! Dished pistons! Aaiaaghghg!

Well Ralph, I'll measure the flywheels and post the dimensions. It is definitely narrower than the previous years models by perhaps a third of an inch altogether (that is comparing the flywheel assemblies) and has smooth sides on the outside.

Now I realize there’s a lot more that can be done with this engine. I’m new to the Sportster and Buell world and this is where I’m starting. This is phase 1. After I ride this bike for a while, and become more comfortable with the power increase, (there will be a power increase right?) I’ll look at other mods like heads and pistons to match. Also need to save up some money. This engine building is addictive, I just can’t get enough.
