Hey All, Here are some before & after shots of a 99 X-1 set of heads. Check out the mass amount of carbon build up! I traced the root of the evil to bad manifold seals (both were folded), and the "Non-Fallable" race ecm maps. The "pitting" you see in the cleaned pics is actually carbon debris flung out from the 2nd head.

My ports on my M2 looked similar, but due to blown valve seals on the exhaust side. Nice pics! |

Thanks Ceejay, Yes - the exhaust seal is shot, you can even see the wet oil band around the stems. Soundman....... |

Just curious, do you have still have your breathers routed into your intake? Or, are you using a catch can? |

Bluz-- I am using a catch can and a vent set up, See below... The can is beside the battery with braided lines going to it. Then it's vented to the rear of the bike under the tailsection. Soundman...... |

Soundman, wow! what color is that frame/fittings? Very nice your bike looks damn good. How hard was it to do the AN thing, I went stainless but they don't have cool colors like yours. My piston tops were pretty bad, I have pics somewhere will try to post soon, which was probably due to previous owners either poor break-in or due to not rerouting breathers, not real sure but when I tore it down I had some oil laying on the top ring set, which could be normal, but didn't seem right. |

Ceejay, Thanks. The motor fragged out about 3 years ago, so during the teardown I decided to strip the frame and repaint it. It is some GM pearl blue that is used on pickups. The AN fittings are just standard Earl's #6 fittings. I'm fortunate to work in a fab shop which has all the tools to do that kind of stuff. The Bike is torn down again, but I have to travel alot so it will probably be August before it's back together. Soundman........ |

BTW, Here are some shots of the "only cleaned" and "polished" valves. I'm not really interested with an increase in flow, but I am hoping that the carbon won't stick to the valves near as much now that they are polished. Does anyone have any experience with carbon buildup (or lack of) and polished valves? Thanks, Soundman..... |

Me thinks me should have posted this in the Valvetrain section. Soundman.... |

Soundman: Check with Branch Flowmetrics at branchflowmetrics.com. They do a mirror polish of the head, valves, stems and ports, that they claim gets no carbon buildup. Everything on their website is about standard Harleys but if you call them they do good things for Buells |
