As far as I know the Sportie header nuts are exactly the same as on the Buells and big twins [i.e. #8 grade 5/16-24 NF nuts]. That being said I am not the world's greatest expert on Harley and Buell parts and my Buell heads are at my mechanic's for repair and so I can't check them out personally.

They are "crushed" so you can't thread them on by hand. That's normal. I like asking for them from the girl at the parts counter.

anybody know if these are legit hd numbers? from the force install instructions it says in one spot locknuts 33318-85, then further into the instructions it says 33318-85 locktab washers, i went to sheldon hd in auburn mass. and the parts guy said these are not hd numbers, is it possible they had a typo over at force or maybe they know of parts that exist everywhere but sheldons?

If these are grade 8 hardware, how come they are always breaking off or the threads mashing up?

That's the part for the locktab washer. It is a valid HD part number. I don't recommend using them - they are more a pain in the butt than anything else. The bigtwins use the lock tabs in the Primary to keep a couple nuts from backing off.
I don't think the HD studs or nuts are grade 8 - haven't seen anything to confirm or disprove that assumption.
The best trick is prevention. Check the nuts after every ride or use two nuts on each stud.
If you really get tricky you can drill and safety wire the nuts, but for our race bikes, we just double nut them.

What's the best treatment for rusted exhaust studs? Smear with anti-seize? (I'm not removing anything. Just noticed a severe rust problem and want to be pro-active.)
