Torque at the rear wheel is just:
torque at the engine (i.e. what a Dynojet shows)
x primary ratio (1.6)
x the transmission ratio (depends on the gear you're in)
x the final drive ratio (55/29=1.9 for some, 61/27=2.26 for USA)

Speed is just:
rotations per minute
x minutes per hour (usually 60)
/ primary ratio
/ transmission ratio
/ final drive ratio
x tire circumference in inches (about 77.9" for an average 180/55ZR17)
/ 12 inches to a foot
/ 5280 feet to a mile

So, supposing you're at 4000 rpm, about where a Buell likes to cruise, and have 100 ft/lbs of torque on tap...

GearEng Tqx Pri Ratiox Trans Ratiox Final Ratio= RW torqueMph
1st1001.62.691.981836.1
2nd1001.61.971.959949.3
3rd1001.61.431.943567.9
4th1001.61.181.935982.3
5th1001.61.001.930497.0

With US gearing, it would be:

GearEng Tqx Pri Ratiox Trans Ratiox Final Ratio= RW torqueMph
1st1001.62.692.2697430.3
2nd1001.61.972.2671341.4
3rd1001.61.432.2651857.1
4th1001.61.182.2642769.2
5th1001.61.002.2636281.6

So you're gaining rear wheel torque, but your cruising speed at a comfortable 4000 rpm is lower.

Now, say you put both the Baker 6-speed AND the US final gearing on your bike...

GearEng Tqx Pri Ratiox Trans Ratiox Final Ratio= RW torqueMph
1st1001.62.522.2691232.4
2nd1001.61.962.2671041.6
3rd1001.61.442.2652156.7
4th1001.61.182.2642769.2
5th1001.61.002.2636281.6
6th1001.60.862.2631194.9

See, now you can have your cake and eat it too! You've got the torque and the nice cruise speed.

Looking at the ratios, it seems that 1st is lower and 6th too high. To correct the 6th ratio they seeel you a 26 tooth front but that aggravates 1st even more.

So does anyone have one of these 6ers or know of someone? Would really like to know. Want to spend the green but would like some serious input. Went through several mags(4) that had installs/write ups on it but none far as long term or anything.

Thanks again

My buddies on the TLR and Slupperhawk are getting nervous. Just want to make sure. Seems that $2350 could do alot for other items. Oh well.

Rippin:

I ran alongside one of these last summer. The bike had a 110 HP motor with 100 ft. lbs. of torque. 1st was essentially useless as it got wound up in an instant. Seems to me the unit would be well suited for an 883 Sportster or stock Buell. As power and torque goes up the driveline needs to get higher in order to put that extra force into forward motion. Also I don't like their use of the old big teeth noisy gears that HD discarded in 1996.

Jmarts:

Curious to know if your friend had the optional close ratio gear set since you said "1st was useless" because the standard ratio that comes in the trans kit would actually give you a couple more mph per rpm over stock? Also did his 6th gear have Andrews PCR teeth or old style?

Thanks again in advance for any help.

In looking at their website it seems as if all they use is the old style gear teeth. Only HD to my knowledge uses the quieter "high contact" type. Check the website for ratios. According to what I 've read 1st had a higher number, thus a lower gear. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th are the same with 6th being .86 or so. The trans will do nothing for you except make you loose drag races and lug your motor unless you are going 100 mph.

The ratios are listed above ... unless I made a mistake, the Baker has a 2.52 1st, versus 2.69 stock. So the Baker has a taller 1st.

So then with the 2.52 1st (about 7% taller than stock) and the 26 tooth trans pulley, one would have a slightly taller 1st and slightly lower 2nd through 6th. Cruising in 6th at 80 might then be possible. Actually this is starting to look like something pretty cool.

The poor transition between 1st and 2nd (2nd to 3rd in older trans) in later transmissions might actually be improved.

Cruising at 80! Hell the group I ride with barely sees under 90+. Its not the matter of drag racing here it long distance cruise missles.
I pinged Andrews and Baker today to try to get some feedback but haven't heard yet from them. When we rode the Slimey Crud this fall we put over 400 miles that day so it would be sure nice not to have to wring the ol girl so high.

Ryan:

You are not going to be able to stay with rice rockets on the open road. When I said cruise at 80 I meant the minimum speed. Of course with a .86 6th and the standard secondary ratio you will be able to cruise well over 90 mph with the rpm similar to your current 5th at 80 (ca. 4000). You might have to get clip-ons to reduce wind buffeting.

J:

I'd like to get clip ons but we usually have to ride 90-150 miles just to get to these awesome roads. I've had 3 weekends at BFR and on at Road America with my current set up. I've learned proper foot positioning/body technique over the last 4 years of Cyclonedom not to mention combined 20000+miles on the two of them.

I know I should at least invest in a pair of rearsets. But with my wifes size 10 I barely have room cuurently. When I'm by myself I'm able to use her pegs w/great success given I'm in the proper gear for corners.

Jason(SlupperHawk) and Brent(TLR) could not beleive how fast our Buells actually where until we went on the Slimey Crud Run. Between Pine Bluff and Lealand the way we went their probably wasn't 1 mile of straight. We left Pine Bluff and by the time we stopped at Sauk Prairie their jaws were dropped. Accusing me of big bore/stroker stuff. Jason said he had to run up to 150 to catch us off some of the curves. So if I could go 145ish on those straights I'm positive they would not catch me!

Hope this weather passes.

I have run in front and behind of 600's and TLR's here in the N. GA mountains. My experience is that on the way there, cruising on the freeway if they open up they dust me. I can only catch up when they let down. Also on my S1 I don't like to sustain more than 80 mph because of wind buffeting. In the tight curves (ca. 20 to 40 mph) I can easily ride their rear tires or gain distance on them if I'm ahead. The moment there is a 1/4 mile straight if I have allowed them to get close they can easily pass me while I make my motor bounce off the rev limiter.

You can ride ahead of many based on your ability but motorcycle against motorcycle Buells will only excel off the line (and the race better be short) and in the tight twisties.

As I said above, with the 26 front pulley (if it fits) you will be able to (according to their web site) have 4% more torque on the top 5 gears giving you a bit of an advantage at moderate speeds (20 to 60). On the top you will be able to exceed the 140 mph theoretical limit.

Here's a little spread-sheet-thing (Exel) that will allow you to enter your rear tire diameter and a specific engine RPM, & see MPH in each gear for the various US/Euro pulley combinations.

Get an accurate rear tire diameter for the captain's calculation above by measuring, with rider on the fully loaded bike, the distance from the ground to the center of the axle then double it. This will account for the give of the tire's contact patch.

Thanks for the spreadsheet Capt.!

Excellent spreadsheet!!! I was thinking about the baker 6-speed but it's just too much money... sad to say but its almost the price of a used buell. I'm thinking about putting euro pulleys on my M2. When driving on the highway my engine is at engine is at 3500 rpms whrn doing 80. I'd really like to get that rpm down to 3000 rpms so I can cruise for longer distances with out winding the motor out. Makes the bike quieter too. I'll start with the rear pulley first. If i need more, I'll get the front. Does anyone know where get buell parts at cost? :)

depends on what you need. if you can get it from Mid USA, i can get it for NEAR cost. unfortunately Mid USA not a huge dealer in buell stuff. go to your dealer, steal the book and look through it.

In a Buell transmission the output "shaft" that propels the rear wheel (actually an extension of one of the 5th gear pair) is composed of two gears of different diameters. The 1:1 5th operates w/o the use of the countershaft by simple locking to the mainshaft. All gearing (1-4) that passes though the countershaft is further reduced on output since the countershaft 5th is smaller than the case mounted "output" 5th.

What this means to us seekers of a 6th speed is that this new gear is going to have to overcome this reduction on output. To do this the mainshaft gear is going to have to be bigger than otherwise and the speed of the countershaft faster than otherwise. This approach adds unnecessary weight, produces and more stress and wear.

If anyone is still interested in an overdrive we have an engineer around here that is building input & output shafts that give the bike a 13% higher speed. He uses helical gears for strength & quietness. He also beefed up the bearings & seals for durability.
I'll scan his data sheet and post it for the record.

Can anyone give me the actual tooth counts (not ratios) for all gears by year (it's not in my M2 2K manuals)?

None of the "experts" here have ever seen a transmission apart?

Or not interested in how parts function that aren't chrome/billet/carbon fiber, and visible?

Never mind. When it's done it just won't go on this board.

That's a bit harsh. Oh well.
I assume the information at the top of this page doesn't give you what you want.
If you want actual tooth counts then I'd suggest a parts book coupled with a dealership visit for an analysis of each individual gear cluster.
I'm not surprised that the info varies between Andrews/Baker and H-D.
But then I'm not an expert even though I've seen a few transmissions apart, but it's been too many years to trust to memory.
I think I'll stop on the way home and pick up some cheap chrome from the local clearance table so I can have something to polish.

http://www.andrews-products.com/Subpages/technical_index.htm

And I know these links are probably no use to you but sometimes I just like looking stuff up, and besides I can almost count the teeth of the Baker gearset in the photo on the last link. ; )

Have a nice day.
