Is there any point in trying to sand or otherwise dress striations on the tubes. One leg has a texture that reminds me of one of those carving-knife sharpening implements. Its not leaking yet but it sure doesn't look good.
Alternatively, can the tube alone be replaced?

Eric,
You can buy the fork tube separately.
A tube for an M2 is about $36. The tubes for an S2 are probably a bit more.

I had some problems with my M2, the left leg looked fine but leaked.
I have a new one on the way.

Eric,if its just discolored don't freak out as I had a similar episode on mine.Especially if its not leaking. If its not broke--don't fix it.Wanted the front forks Race-teched.The dork who I took them to took one look at the coppery colored burnishing on tubes and told me I needed new ones.I ended up going to a completely different--and much more knowledgable guy who looked at them and said they all do that. Not to worry as its not wear.Mine have 75,000 miles and no problem.Saved me big dollars.Cannot get those fork tubes as the supplier--WP-- is now owned by KTM,I called west coast supplier--and everything.Best guess was 3-6 months.I even looked into getting them re-hardchromed.Fortunately all was for nought.

Its way more than discolouring, Jim. I could file my nails on it! Its not leaking yet but I expect it'll need attention soon. It is a hardening plated on, so there's no cheap out like dressing it with sandpaper, right?
If I read you right that it would be a six month wait from KTM, then I should get at that for next winter. Any leads?

Sportyeric,

Anton, who is a buell mechanic, said something to me about glazing, I think he called it, on my S1. He said you could turn them. I had never heard of this, but the other guy at the shop said he knew a guy who could do it. just take a fraction off I guess.

H&H is the name of the place, let me know if you want a phone number for more info from Anton himself.

Then get on here and post what he says, cause I am interested in getting it done as well.

Glazing sounds like way more of a possibility than wearing that hardchrome finish.Try buffing it off with Mothers or similar.Clean well after.Seems we would have seen a few more posts about this over the years and yours and mine are the only ones I remember.
