No worries. Enjoy your ride too.

Timbo, Al, the back way outa Frazier Park was paved when I rode it about five years back. The "north" fork is shorter, straighter, seldom used and drops you into the Central Valley on the 33/166 just southwest of Maricopa. Easy run up the 33 to the 58. The "west" fork is twistier and used as part of a loop by sport bikers who come up from the south to the Park then back to the southland on the 33. It drops you on the 33 somewhat south of where the 33 joins with the 166. I havn't rode either in recent times.

That last time a friend and I rode up the north fork to F.P. then down the west fork and then back to Bakersfield. On the way down my friend hit a flat rock that shot back and severed my front brake line clean off my Sportster.

Timbo if you ever want to get to that Dennys just take the next off ramp to the North. Drops you on the same street. Cal Trans does some weird things sometimes.

Hey,
any route suggestions for a new-to-california rider? I'm going to be heading in from San Fran on either a suzuki DRZ400 or a VFR, probably Friday morning, possibly thursday night.

Looking for something off the main path

Thanks
Matt

Glen,
Thanks for the info. Lost your front brake line? Man, talk about having to change your riding style. Yeah, brakes are for wussies anyway

Sparky,
So what are your plans? Does the route Al mentioned work for you? If so, where would you want to hook up? And just one more question, where are you and Jen staying in SLO. I'm asking because I would like to check availability, maybe make a reservation for Thursday night at the same place.

Timbo,
Reindog and I are staying at:
Best Western Somerset Inn
1895 Monterey St
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
Tel: 1 (805) 544-0973 Fax: 1 (805) 541-2805

I poked around the web a bit on some of the routes that I was thinking about taking out of Frazier park.

Here are some links:

Mil Potrero Hwy/Cerro Noroeste
http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/CerroNoroesteRd.htm
This road looks to have some fun stuff.

Soda Lake Road: http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/SodaLakeRd.htm
Nothing real special about this road, and it does have a 15mile dirt stretch, but it chops a good bit of distance off of an apparently incredibly boring stretch of 166/33 (Maricopa, Taft areas), dumping into 58 in Simmler shortly before 58 gets less boring going west. However, it also chops off what is apparently a stellar section of 58 as well. So I would be up for going either way.

read the links, comments?

AH-HA, thank you Al!
Now I know the names to the roads!
"North" fork is the Mil Potrero/Cerro Noroeste. Fun but not real tight for the most part. Nobody else on it when we rode it.
"West" fork is Lockwood Valley.Musta seemed longer because of more curves. A few bikes & cars. 33 from there up to 166 is a bit boreing tho.
Can't help you with Soda Lake Road, I've seen the sign many times but never made the turn as I didn't think it would be interesting til now.

I forgot to mention that there was gas in Maricopa. Busy fastrip so should still be there.
I filled my Sportster there so there must have been 91 or better octane.

Further explorations of the roads on google maps and Pashnit....

If we had more time, it would be cool to head towards Ojai, and take 33 out of there up to Soda Lake... 33 out of Ojai looks like fun, see http://pashnit.com/roads/cal/Highway33.htm. Maybe meeting in Ventura would make it all work out...what time do you think we would need to connect in Ventura to make the 33 to Soda Lake road to 58 to SLO possible? Reidog and I could be in Ventura by 9:30-10:00 AM if we blast from SD starting at about 7AM. We'd be crossing through the belly of the beast (LA) in rush hour traffic, but hey, we're on motorcycles, how long can it take?

Reindog and I have to be in Monterey on Friday between 10 and 12 to pick up some passes at a hotel there. But with a real early start out of SLO friday AM, it looks like it might be real fun to take Nacimiento Lake drive out of Pasa Robles..it drops you onto Highway 1 about halfway between Morro Bay and Monterey and looks to be pretty fun, see http://pashnit.com/roads/cal/NacimientoRd.htm With a 7AM start time, 10:30-11 in Monterey looks doable. If we don't do that, we'll blast up 101 and take Arroyo Seca Road, which becomes Carmel Valley Road, for a fun way to the Monterey and the track.
Al

Yes, 33 south of Lockwood is nice, you've got me fired up to ride all these roads again. All the stuff around Ferrisville is so much closer I just don't head out South West much.

Timbo, I'm thinkin' more and more about making it a day ride from South Bay to the Love Shack.

Was thinking I-5 to 46 to 101 & Carmel Valley Rd would be doable but with inland temps over 100, will probably scale back I-5 to cutting thru Frazier Park per Al's route but continue North on 166/33 to 58 and take Geneseo & Creston Rds into Paso Robles. Then it'd be 101 to Carmel Valley Rd (G16) at Greenfield. I've been on parts of these roads in various poker runs in the past and the scenery is beautiful and varied. Hopefully the heat will be bearable on 33 & 58.

Al, Soda Lake Rd, if I remember, starts out from an old abandoned 76 gas station at Cerro Noroeste Rd & 166. For some reason it never looked like an inviting road for me to try. Not sure if it was just not maintained or maybe it was gravel or had a locked gate at the time. But that was then. Who knows, it's probably all different nowadays.

One road in that area that was pretty interesting was Elkhorn Grade Rd which is somewhere between Soda Lake Rd and 58. They both go generally in the same direction. So if Soda Lake Rd doesn't look good, go a few miles further to Elkhorn.

Also be advised, the Naciemento-Ferguson Rd was closed when Jen & I made our maiden voyage in the new Corvette last February.

EBear is on his way to Laguna already! i never did like him very much. ; )

all: the road that cuts through Fort Hunter Ligget (just off the G14) and intersects Highway 1 just south of Lucia is quite spectacular. i believe Sparky told me that he and Jen have ridden it before. it woundn't be a great choice for making time, but it is high on the adventure factor.

expect a delay at the main gate coming in from the east as the guard confirms that ALL paperwork is in order. no firearms are appreciated on base, one could reasonably assume. cameras must be stowed -- no photography -- and i believe they're not high on civilians stopping and gawking on the way thru.

the gate on the west side of the base is unmanned (the wilderness location and overall "menacing" appearance of the gate is almost surreal), and i'm not sure how one goes about entering from this direction. i will ask Thursday at the main gate on our way thru.

Al, Hwy 58 just east of McKittrick is spectacular for about the first 20 miles, very twisty, great pavement, very little traffic. once onto the Carrizo Plain the road straightens out, but still isn't a bad way to get to the coast.

ride safe, y'all. see you at Laguna. : )

Forecast temps along the south Central Valley portion of 33,166,58 and I5 for Thursday & Friday is 95 to 99 degrees. That'll be a couple of degrees cooler than this last weekend but still plenty stinking hot.

I was thinking of heading all the way up on Thursday too, originally.

Where will you be leaving from? And at what time? I may want to tag along.

Timbo, since we are camping at the Corkscrew View reserved sites, all we need to do is get a vehicle pass from someone at the Love Shack. They have 3, one for each of the 3 sites that SCAB/BRAG bought. That's where we would need you to call that someone on your cell phone and have them bring the vehicle pass (es) to us.

No races or events scheduled for Thursday, so there should be no problem getting into the track to set up camp.

There's 2 Buellers meeting Jen & me at the Starbucks by Bartels & the 76 gas station on Lincoln at 6 am Thursday. You're welcome to join.

Have been on Nacimiento road once coming from the west side in a Jeep. There was a guard checking for all paperwork there. I plan on riding that stretch in the near future with my bike. The other month when I came back from Glendale Buell demo days, Hwy. 33 north of Ojai was closed for repairs. I hope it has been reopened since then as it is also an excellent stretch to ride. I am trying to keep my eyes and ears out so maybe I can meet some of you Thursday or Friday here on the Central Coast on your way up north.

Al - Thursday night Farmers Market in SLO on Higuera Street is an interesting place to be. Good food to be had, and live (sometimes you wish they wern't) entertainment on each corner.
