I'll take some more pics in a little while. I made them shorter, had to route the clutch cable through the flyscreen module though. I like it! |

Looks sweet.
I've been thinkin for some time about taking some of the sets I've got (and the ones on my shop XB9S black CF bike), sending them out for polish followed by hard black anodize. I did a bunch of parts like that on my S3 and S1W (including the entire fork tubes on the S1W) and they look really good that way. The polish makes them smooth and mirror bright, the anodize takes some of the gloss away and turns them satin black.
Only problem is that I think it would make the crossroads bar plate cost about $75 more than it currently does. Worth it? Could do it cheaper with paint, but I'm partial to hard anodize myself.

Al, I powder coat things all the time. I think with the colors available these days you could come up with anything you want. If you page down on the 3% thread you will see some parts I coated today. I'm putting them on tomorrow A.M. and will post pics. It is dirt cheap relative to what you get out of it. Anodization is great but I'm not familiar with the prices for large pieces. I have thought about buying the anodizing kit from Eastwood for small stuff. Just thinking out loud. I'll be ordering some parts soon and will take that coil off your hands....Odie |

Al, you could offer both the anodize and the powder coat.
If you are thinking of doing this yourself you'll find that anodize is just as simple and inexpensive as powder coating. |

Thinking about it, $75 is too much. Getting the plate polished, IF one tried to do the pockets, would cost about $40. But if one only polished the top surfaces, and left the bead blast finish in the sides and bottoms of those pockets, it'd be more like $20-25 tops, and that would actually look really nice to have satin tops with matte pockets (after anodize). Hard black anodize, IF you do enough parts to meet the minimum lot charge of $100-$150 typical of shops around here, would be anywhere from $10-$20 per part, but I'm totally guessing on that. It's been a while since I've had it done, and when I did, it was for some personal parts, not for commercial use, so I may have gotten different pricing then then what I could get as a business.
Anodize it myself? No frickin way. Here in So. Cal, the platers and metal finishers are highly regulated. If you get one of the kits, what do you do with the chemicals? Dumping them down the drain is irresponsible and highly illegal, doing it right opens up a whole can of regulatory worms. No thanks, I want nothing to do with the processes and chemicals, I'll pay someone to do it right. I've had some parts regular black anodized, and other parts hard black anodized. The hard black holds the color over the long term, and is tough as nails. The regular black can fade and "blue" over time, and is more scratch prone.
Powder coat is cheap enough, but it doesn't feel right to take a nice piece of milled billet aluminum and cover it with a plastic film. I'd anodize it or leave it to the customers, I think. Powdercoat shops are everywhere these days.
But assuming the above WAG's on pricing, it ought to be a $50.00 adder or less. Heck, if I did 50-100 of them, it'd probably be half that. But I can't afford to sit on 50 of anything, the Buell parts biz doesn't support quantity purchasing like that.

It's not like you're selling parts to Hondas or something that wide spread.
I forgot about the chem regs. I'm so used to all that being taken care of, and yes that is a major expense, not to mention when the EPA decides to drop by and make sure everything is Kosher.
I know you may think powder coating is hiding the nice machined aluminium, but for me it was a no brainer. I really dislike that color/finish.
Hard anodize does sound like it would be the way to go though, for that show bike look.
I'll powder coat mine asap, I like the Street Fighter anti-bling more.
