Looks like there won't be perfect dates for anyone. If we do go with May 22-24, is anybody up for making it a really long weekend? The Fastour bunch <http://www.fastour.us> is putting on their annual "Twist N Shout" 1K/24 rally the weekend of May 20-22.

AL, good eye, on noticing the different posts on two different boards.
While I knew Carey had been banned from Badweb for one reason or another, I wasn't aware he had decided to take on the organizing of this ride, and was posting this on another board.
I'll step back and let the "experts" handle this, since I'm just a novice at organizing rides.

Also it does appear as there will be no perfect date for this ride. I do hope we can find a good compromise that will allow ALL the California riders attend since this all started due to the California riders desire to come an ride some of Arizona's finest with us.
Arizona riders can get together anytime to ride this route, but it involves careful planning to include the drive time to and from California for you guys...
Good luck, I certainly hope this ride works out...

Bart,
I'd like to see you keep the momentum of this ride going. Your "Expertise" in organizing is
greatly needed here. Pick a Date. Whoever can make it-fine. Whoever can't make it-we'll plan
an early summer ride. It's difficult to plan a
ride that everyone can make because of conflicting schedules. Pick a Date-and we'll all
have to work along or around it!

I have to agree with you Bart, as much is it would be perfect for everyone to make it, the AZ contingent has less priority then the Cali and other out of staters. We are the hosts/guides for this one, not the attendees : ) Lets pick a set of dates and nail them down.

What's the date?

I don't have a sacborg acct, so someone should be sure to tell them about it...

Further up this thread, the 22, 23, 24 was agreed upon by the Cali riders. Stick with that Bart and by God you are the best tour guide anyone could ask for. I know you love being up front...

Bart,

I don't think Carey was trying to take over planning the ride. I think there is a certain amount of frustration over which dates work best and he was just trying to take some initiative. Since his ban here he's out of touch with the AZ crowd, so until they start also posting on SACBORG (which might be a good idea)I'll try to keep him up with the current info.
I think we need to pick a date that interferes least with the majority of the Cali. riders schedules. After all it was they who initiated it. I for one just cant wait to ride.
So, what's it going to be? April 22,23,24 or April 29,30,May 1?

Carey is VERY qualified to run the ride.
He ran the BRAG group out of Chosa's a few years back and organized many rides with the East side Sport riders.
Thanks for the vote of confidence folks, but I'm just a Hooligan with a passion to ride.

It would appear that the California riders are pretty much agreable to all dates except AL who has to work them into his business schedule.
So if April 22,23,24 works for him, let's nail it down, and go from there.
Kobie,
forward my email address to Carey, and I'll pass on all the info I've set up to date, as far as mileage, lunch, hotel reservations, etc.

Charlie,
nice Avatar, you are my hero!!!

There are people a lot farther away than us Cali types who are considering this ride so I don't think our schedules should be given any greater weight than anybody else's. On the other hand working the ride's schedule around Al Lighton's wouldn't be a bad thing as his abilities have come in handy a few times on rides. Also the American Sport Bike bike usually draws some interests too.

OHHH, We're talking APRIL 22-24? It looked like it was zeroing in on MAY,14,15,16, 2005, I pointed out that conflicted with Sears Point and that it would eliminate me and a bunch of Bay area riders that might come otherwise. Then an ambiguous 22,23,24 was proposed, without looking at a calendar, I assumed that meant one week later in May, but now that I look at a calendar, I see that must have meant April. My bad.

April is good. The AMA races are in Alabama that week, I doubt we'll have any east coasters over. No conflicts with my schedule on this date. I think I'll buy an electric vest between now and then, though, and might even take the S3 instead of the XB or S1.

Lock it down, someone tell Carey and he can post it over there and start recruiting riders from there. I'll chime in as well. Next we need the recommendations for lodging figured out. That needs to happen NOW so that reservations can be made.

I'm looking forward to this. Oktoberfast at Ferris's was a grand time, having the Arizona "equivalent" will be great!

Al

Denise and i are flexible (she's very limber, too...) so any date will work for us given enough notice. we will prolly truck bike/bikes to AZ, do the ride, and then truck on home.

Asking for those days off now (well, the Friday and Monday anyway)...

As far as weather in Prescott at that time...

So far, the last four years I've been here it's been excellent, but this year we've had more precipitation than the last four years combined so I don't know. I'm pretty sure there won't be any ice or anything, but I'm not sure about the rain. I woke up to 5" of snow this morning...

Just a quick note,
I have space at my apartment complex to store trailers, let me know in advance so I can clue the management in.
I also have floor space for those not too picky in my apartment. If you need a place to stay/sleep the first and last nights it is not a problem. I'll even break out the inflatable bed for ya. (Sorry Belookin, the doll is not available!) Just let me know so I can prepare.
I'll also get a list of local motels for the long distance folks that will need a place the first and last nights.

I'll get a flier made up before the end of January for everyone, so we can post on various websites.

M1,
You gonna start down here in Phoenix? or meet us somewhere on the spars?
Also, I've been debating the route past Prescott to Camp Verde. Is it more scenic (and also quicker) through to Clarkdale, and then down Hwy260 to Camp Verde, or better to jump onto the 17 and blast up over the pass then down to Gen'l Crooks trail? I do like that pass, reminds me of the pass in Utah, right after the RANE group left the dealership and blasted towards our evening stop. (remember Ferris?) he he he
What do you think? Which would be better/faster/more enjoyable? Your input is appreciated!

I'll start working on getting the time off. Just got the word today that a big project that should be contracted out won't be and I'm the only one in the department with the skills to do it. Looks like spare time might become kinda sparse for a while. It should be done by then tho and you bet I'll be ready to get away.

I'll be a following where ever you aridzonians lead me on this one. But word has it that we'll be tracking some of the same territory that we covered on the Brag event in late 2003, which is alright by me, there were some kick roads on that trip, especially on the way back out of the Morenci mine area. It would have been very fun, but we'd just left the scene of Daryl Levesque's fatal accident, so we weren't exactly in a joyous sporting mood at the time.

But BEFORE that trip, there were some Badweb discussions of the upcoming trip, and Jim Witt had posted a lot of cool pictures and topo maps. For those that didn't see them at the time, see here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/6817/34913.html

Bart... You said you did a pre-ride (or two : )) and it took eight hours? Was that just to Show-Low from Phoenix or did that include the 191 back to Phoenix?

I've been through Jerome/Clarkdale a couple times this year. Taking 69/169/17 to General Crook would probably cut about ?30-40? or so minutes from the trip. The road through Jerome is a "little" bumpy (mostly at the apex of the tight turns) but worth the effort IMO at the LEAST for when you come over the hill into Jerome and look out over the Verde Valley. Court says they have great Ice-Cream there too... I would imagine that if we have a slow group, we may be able to take the fast group through Jerome and the slow group over 17 and meet at the gas station where 260 and general crook meet up. I don't think it'll be necessary though. Both paths are scenic and I can't imagine too much traffic between Ctwd and PV on the road through Jerome.

I say we go through Jerome/Clarkdale unless someone has had bike trouble and we're pressed for time.

From there it's pretty much straight through to Show-Low on the 260. Sleep there and then the ride gets real interesting for me as I haven't spent any time on the eastern side of the state. I did the souther tip of 191 w/ you and a few others last summer, but that's it...

As far as where I'll meet you guys... Probably in Wickenberg. If you don't see me there, just press on to Prescott and I'll meet you in the middle somewhere. I can get to Wick and back on one tank so I should be good. If anyone would like to start from up here in Prescott I have plenty of driveway space in a quiet neighborhood and two extra couches (plenty of floor space as well). I could probably fit three trailers here as well if Bart can't take them all down there. They wouldn't be "secure" as such, but I've left an entire 150 piece Craftsman tool set on my front porch in plain view for over a year and no one has touched it (except me of course : )).

In any case, to sum it up...

Either way is scenic, the road through Jerome is pretty nice and gets my vote.

AL,
those maps are still good and you are VERY correct.
We WILL be retracing part of the route of the infamous TourqueFest2003. Mainly, Hwy191,(formally known as: hwy666) This is the hwy due north of Morienci. We will be able to stop and pay our respects to Daryl at his memorial along Hwy78.
Of interest though is also, the first days ride. Which will encompass a grand portion of Arizona roads from the valley, through two mountain ranges. Yarnell pass, the Prescott valley. Highway 260 is a Beulltiful hwy that winds along the Mogollon rim. Spectacular views abound, as do sharp drop offs. You will not be let down by the route we have chosen. Be forwarned though. The first day will be a long one, and the second will be technical. I'm sure all will enjoy.

There is still one matter to deal with regarding the final day. The ride route will only require a few hours to complete. We have been kicking around the idea of ending the ride at an indoor go-cart facility. One that rivals the Malibu Grand Prix. Fast carts, decent food, and hopefully lots of smiles will abound. Perhaps this will be the perfect end to a great weekend. Those of you with family members attending will probably like this, even though deep down, we are ALL children. Or maybe it's just me? : )
Anyway, give your thoughts as to this little addition to the ride. This is an indoor track. (actually, I believe there are more than one track in the building)

M1,
that is exactly the info I was looking for. Both times I went through I shot through PV and down to I-17 and then out 260. Never once thinking of going on up to Clarksdale on through Jerome until I was walking through the route on my GPS map service the other night. I think the views you describe, as well as the roads will be a welcome addition to the route. Depending on Friday traffic it shouldn't be that much longer. Thanks for your input, it IS much appreciated.
