All going to the races - Candice is trying to swing a discount but if not - it's $20!!!! at the gate. Very sorry about that.

When you arrive, tell them you're part of the Lavin-Yurassov ride out of either San Diego or Glendale. That's how they'll be identified at the gate if there's any discount. Just not quite enough time to work it all out today. Hopefully they'll cut the groups some slack at the gate but if not, you'll be stuck with the $20 fee.

Apologies for the "sticker shock" - the $20 for spectators was a surprise!!

Hope to see the folks out there!

By the way - the "hospitality suite" is pretty huge - thanks to James (JProvo) - and Alfa Leisure!!! this is a 3-axle Toyhouse with slide-outs. Gonna be sweet!

Hey Al,

Would love to ride up to the track with you guys, but like the AMA event in April, I'll be trucking in from Phoenix and riding once in Fontana. Looking forward to meeting again, and watching a Buell in the event!

Weeellll ahem, ummm....

Turns out we had too many problems getting the fuel injection/ignition module dialled in. The guys at San Diego - Fread Finnerty and company are to be commended for busting their butts but looking back on it now, we just waited too long before pulling the bike out of the other shop and getting it into Fread's hands - not to mention parts (such as case bolts) which were just flat LOST before San Diego took over and had to be ordered. They'll have it running within days now but there were just TOO MANY parts and pieces which were not even looked at by the previous mechanic that San Diego needed to order. Common enough items which should have been ordered as a matter of course.

Enough whining!!!

We all got practice sessions on Friday. Fread was working with us on mapping out the track - race lines, braking, shifting, throttle points... and we pushed it until Friday evening with the final call to San Diego when we just couldn't get it lit and running well enough to risk it. By about 8:30PM Friday, we pulled the plug.

I cannot say enough good about San Diego taking on this project at the last minute. They assumed (as had I) that the mechanic doing the work had ordered all the parts necessary - especially since he had "guaranteed" that we'd have the bike in Glendale's showroom in time for their open house on the 22nd and to Willow on the 24th for a track day.

I cannot say enough bad about the other mechanic (who shall remain nameless until the final bill is settled)

I am more angry with myself that I didn't pull the bike a month earlier when we started missing deadlines and getting excuses. My bad.

We are going to have a great, strong bike. In retrospect, we have had it in good hands this time. The things San Diego has found while going through the bike I believe would have been ignored and just been assembled into the motor and chassis regardless. We'd have likely blown the bottom end due to damaged bearings.

We stayed to watch the race just the same. It truly would have been fun. We did learn a lot just by watching. Nobody can touch the pitting of Vesrah Suzuki. They were averaging 17-18 seconds for 2 tires, rider and refuelling. Army of Darkness is coming around and kicking it! They don't have near the funding as the Big Vesrah effort but managed a very respectable 2nd and 3rd places.

We are disappointed, yes but look forward to the Willow race season, WERA West and the CCS/Formula USA in Vegas in September. After we pay bills and reimburse the BRAG fund, the fund is going to be pretty cash-heavy again.

The hard part about not making the race is knowing that the sponsors - and all the people who had bought burgers and dogs along the way - have been let down. In one sense, "that's racing" but in another, it should have ended at the checkered flag, not the way it did.

Thanks to Ernie and Mario at Glendale HD for the support and confidence. Thanks to James Provencher (JProvo) for arranging the use of the Alfa Leisure Toyhouse! For those of you who have yet to experience racing in luxury, you shoulda been there! Satellite TV, A/C, microwave, fridge and freezer - and LOADS of room.

Thanks to all who supported and encouraged us. It aint over!

We're learning. Next weekend is Willow Springs race weekend.
Stay tuned.

From Barbara Beauchamp:

Glendale and Southern California Club have coordinated a joint ride that will meet in Idyllwild at about 1:00 PM on Sunday, June 27. You can ride with either group of Buells.

The Glendale group plans to leave Glendale Harley-Davidson about 9:00 – plan to be there by 8:30 with a full tank of gas. They will ride the Angeles Crest to get to Idyllwild.

The Southern California Club plans to leave Biggs Harley-Davidson in San Marcos about 9:00 – plan to arrive at 8:30 with a full tank of gas. We have fuel stops planned about every 100 miles.

From Idyllwild we will head out to either Big Bear or Palm Springs.

It will be about a 300-mile day of fun.

Sparky! Hi. I want to join you guys for the ride Sunday- but need to know where to meet up. I live in Hemet right at the base of the mountain going up to Idywilld. I'd like to ride up there with you guys. Maybe you could call me at your fuel stop closest to my place?- or even make my place a stop (I am less than maybe a quarter mile at the most off of 74) if any one needs some tools or something. Or just give me a good time frame guess and I'll look out for you? Let me know...

Laguna Seca!!! There's not been group ride from SoCal posted yet. Anybody up for it? What I gathered so far is:

Ebear and JJ are driving the Love Shack (with our camping gear) up on Wednesday 7/7. Scott Page is riding up Wed overnighting in Morro Bay then riding into Laguna on Thurs.

Jen & I are camping at the Love Shack site at the track. Unless we can get away Wed, we'll most likely ride up early Thurs (work not withstanding).

Don Sabotino and I will be departing Bartels HD/Buell on Wed. AM at 10:00. We will be riding to Morro Bay for a night of fun, then onto the track on Thursday. If you care to join us, be there. We have reservations at La Serena Inn, 805-772-5665. We will be taking a much different route to Morro Bay via some inland "fun, Buell roads". May be a little warm, but it will be more fun than Highway 1. I can be reached at 310-428-3393.

Anyone else heading up Thursday that wants to connect? We haven't worked out the Thursday morning Rendezvous place yet, need to do that ASAP. Contact me at the shop (American Sport Bike) if interested.

Track Map of Laguna.....

The entrance that says Barloy road is the first left into the track from the back way.Scramp prefers people to use this way on track days since it is WAY less crowded. This is the actual entrance to our Corkscrew campsite and is where you get your Armband. The 68 entrance is the front way.Track road is convuluted but ok once your in.Camping with your bike is Fox Hill and is between turns 6 and 7 on top of the hill.Way cool view and all should hike up here to visit Norcal'ers

This year's Laguna Seca was a fun trip. Jen & I planned to ride up with Al Lighton, hook up with Brian Hooper & met his friends in Cambria but, if we were giving out awards, Al's hard luck story and how he made it to the track the next day would win.

We enjoyed camping next to Jerry's Love Shack overlooking the World Famous Corkscrew, watching the races themselves, doing Ebear's 200 mile Santa Cruz local backroad tour with Scott Page, Jerry Johnson, Steve B & Wendy, Nelson, Lynn & Travis. Then there was demo riding the XB12R, talking with Erik Buell & having him sign my blue/yellow scalloped Buell cap. It was fun talking with Peggy & Mary from BRAG, Dr. Steve, Darkside Danny, Curt from NorCal, Jim4Media, Fireman Jim, Gordon Buhle, Viros, Don "Saba-leano", Ferris & Denise, Steve "Lavin-Yurassov" Slaughter & Sunny, Tim & Candy, Barbara & Nelson, a couple of riders with friends from GS BRAG or SCAB on new & legacy Lightnings, and meeting new faces like the fellow from Texas with a custom faired XB9/12?R.

The weather cooperated, the race Buells sounded gnarly and a good time was had by all. On our way back home we ate at a Mexican restaurant in Paso Robles where Steve B noted they had T-shirts for sale that read, "So many cats, so few recipes" and another, "One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor." I like a place with a sense of humor.

Well, now that Sparky brought it up, I guess I gotta tell it.

Headed up on Wednesday night to spend the night at Sparky & Jens place so we could get an early start on Thursday....While adjusting the clutch at his place, I noticed my rear pulley had separated the rear plate half way around. Turns out I'd swallowed the metal lower guard thru the pulley. Joanne brought me a new one up from A.S.B (1.75 hours away), and while we were waiting, we yanked the rear wheel and noticed that my rear bearing was spinning in the hub. Bummer. Mounted up the new pulley, hightailed it back to San Diego at midnight to put on a new wheel (had an extra polished on in the shop). It fought a little (bad rotor threads, stuck rotor bolts, etc), but I was on the road by 12:30PM Thursday. Trip up was an uneventful superslab blast, spent the night in San Luis Obispo. For future reference, every Thursday night in SLO is a street fair/ farmers market/ party. It is a worthy stop on the way to Laguna Seca, lots of hotels that were largely empty, only about 2 hours away and an easy morning putt along the coast, or thru some great roads south of Carmel Valley that Scott Page took.

Had a great time up there, saw most of the usual cast of characters, got to chat with Erik and Henry for a while, put some faces to the names of some of the American Sport Bike vendors and customers, did some marketing activities of my own. The Formula Extreme race was awesome, but too bad about Barnes. Never did see Ferris at the track, but coincidently ran into him with FMJ at El Toritos down on cannery row. We were the VERY last bikes to be let onto Cannery Row, the cops shut the entrance just ahead of me, but let me in since the rest of our group was in.

I left on sunday part way into the 2nd world superbike race, figured I'd drive until sunset. But I made such good time, I made it to Oxnard as the sun dropped out of sight and just hightailed it the whole way home to SD.

Who won the 2nd world superbike race?

Al

Yup, that old month of August just slipped up on me. But, we will have a SCAB and Friends of SCAB meeting this coming Thursday, August 5, 7:00 PM.

The place: Press Box Sports Bar and Grill
Where: In north Anaheim next to the Embassy Suites at the Glassell/Kramer off-ramp, 91 Freeway, just south of the off ramp. That's just east of the 91/57 Interchange.

As usual, Laguna Seca provided some great racing, and again meeting up with great friends from all over. Don Sabatino and I rode up over a two day period on all back roads. Hardly used 101 or Hwy. 1. We were on some great roads, and we and his family had a great night in Morro Bay. And, we saw NO cops either. Thanks again Don for the company.

And a super thanks again to Jerry Johnson and his co-pilot/partner in trouble Eric Barrows. Jerry's 5th Wheel provide us again a wonderful club house with a great view of the corkscrew above turn 9. Buell team members stopped by for an afternoon, and Tim and Candice Hurley got to meet the engine makers of their race bike (ex-Hals Buell). It was a great time.

See ya on Thursday night.

Scott
