Does anybody know anything about a 1974 Norton 850 Commando? There's one in the local paper I'm thinking about calling on. Just curious if there are any issues that anyone knows of about them to watch out for.
Thanks.

Bill, does that answer your question?
Next I get to go down to the DMV office and take the lien notice off to clear the M2 title - could get interesting, standing in line at the DMV office on Mill road, low on caffeine, Friday lunchtime, could get interesting.

Valium should help. Don't think the line will be that long today with all the folks hanging out at the National Round Up in West Bend.

Nothing to sweat with the Norton other than the usual stuff. Lots of aftermarket companies in the US with more than ample parts available. Plus, I always loved that bike! Is a real sweetheart in the twisties.

Norton's ARE splendid -- howsomeever, be aware that they are also equipped with rubber baby buggy bumpers, er, bushings, in an attempt to quell the vibe produced by an 850 that started life as a 500 (or mebbe a 350, I ferget) . . . shimming the little dears is a fiddly, buy reasonably easy, if time consuming, effort

also, one of the features of these things are those lovely BRitish fuel-metering devices they so laughingly call carbs --

the good news is that all the parts are available, electronic ignition and Mikuni kits are available making the bikes acutally usefull for something other then eye candy, and the knowledge available (the Chicago Norton club has a site, I believe, with lots of data-- and they alsways show up in force at the Chicago m/c show) so that you can enjoy your new scoot

damn near best of the Britsh iron, if you ask me (of course you didn't, but you shoulda figured I'd weigh in)

also, Road_Thing has one of similar vintage, I beleive --

Will probably turn out as a no-sale/swap on the Norton, but I gotta try at least. Always wanted one someday.
Thanks for the input, will let you all know how it went on Monday.

Mike...I have to really admire your shopping gene or lack thereof.

Reminds me of the joke about the two bulls, father and son, looking down over a herd of cows. Am sure you remember it. It's the joke where junior wants to run down and get one and pop's says let's walk down and get them all.

Well, you have got to be the Grandpa, cause you don't move. You just sit under the tree up on that hill and wait for them to come to you! LMAO

Hope the guy with the Norton can still get up that hill.

I am getting out an S2 that hasn't seen fuel in a couple years.

Given your new wheels you should be able to make Gotham by nightfall.

What say we go to "Little ITaly" for some homemade cheesecake?

: )

I'll buy!

Greg,

Too bad you don't live a little closer. : ) I rode to Ottawa today to exchange bikes, ran into Coolice and Fiery at Starved Rock HD/Buell. Planned to get the TPS adjusted on the 12 but they told me there is a problem and they couldn't get it to idle properly so they need some time to figure it out.

As much as I like the 12 the 9 still feels good to me too. I think that's what I'll use for the track day if everything goes well.

Need to pick up some Diablos in the next week or so. Over 4000 miles on these 218's & they have held up great considering the amount of burnouts, wheelies, etc, not to mention the mileage. But the rear is getting a pretty decent flat spot up the center from all the not so twisty roads we have here, & the last couple days I have actually been spinning the hell out of it coming around corners. Spooked me real good the first time. Gotta get em swapped before the track day.

Bad,
; ) Guess you're right, I still think I'm a kid.

Greg, Oh man, now that you brought that up. After riding both bikes today, one with stock rubber and the other with Diablos I still can't believe the difference. I'm hoping to put a set of Diablo Corsas on the 9 for the track day and put my Diablos on the 12. I ran into an AMA racer the other day that has a shop over in Iowa and works on sportbikes but his passion is British bikes, he's almost done with his 1000cc Trident and I hope to go riding with him in a couple weeks to learn some local rodes that he says are a blast. Anyway, I might be able to pick up a decent set of test&tune takeoffs from him cheap and save some cash. He also offered me the use of a track bike, if I can't get my bike setup the way I want prior to the track day I might take him up on it. Would everybody laugh if I showed up on a Honda? : D

CJ, I tried to cover my error as quick as I could but Bad was just too quick for me.

Hello everyone,

I got word from our ride leader Gerry Dolphin today that his rear isolator failed and that he wouldn't be able to lead the ride on Sunday. Sorry for the late notice, I've been buried in diapers.: ) There should still be several people showing up to ride. I will be there in the morning to say hi to everyone and to make sure that we have a ride leader, but unfortunately I have to do some other things tomorrow. See you tomorrow.

Dumb Question of the Month...

Is there a Buell Manager at Hal's that replaced Rick or are they just playing musical chairs with the sales staff in reference to the Buell department?

Bill,
No go on the Norton, back to the hilltop I guess. ; )

I suspect there are issues and emotions and desires and accountants at odds with each other down there at Hal's. I thought there were some indicated concerns at one point last year. I have no idea where those concerns have migrated to or what they may have morphed into since then. I haven't been down there in many months.

Topic change:
I saw something weird on the freeway yesterday. At first I thought it was one of those mid-sized scooter bikes, then I thought it was one of those bigwheel motorcycles (TW200?), then when it went past on the other side of the freeway it looked a lot like one of the new CityXB's. Either the guy on it was huge, or I saw a downsized version of one. Couldn't tell if it was one or two cylinder. Probably just a big dude on the new CityX, or a standard XBS with different tires, but those tires sure looked oversized, but by the time I realized it was a Buell is was already going past. Oh well, probably nothing.

Hope the ride went well yesterday. Court's too.

Mike...Was hoping the Norton would make it up the hill for you. Oh well, perhaps the next one will.

Big Folks on Little Bikes just look wrong. I don't care what brand it is. Probably one of the reasons sport touring bikes are starting to sell again. Face it, we are getting older and larger but not quite ready for the Two Wheeled Winnebago's. LOL

Thankfully my name is 'Greg.'

I've tried both and I do prefer the fit of the S3 over the S2. But it is a beulltiful bike nonetheless.

Plus the elevation in the pic on my profile is higher. The really crappy thing is that I am getting many many dollars worth of school loans which theoretically can be put towards anything, it's really tough to put them towards the credit card debt I have recently racked up instead of a new buell. I think the government does it just to torment me.

At least I am committed to donig the foolish thing and resurrecting a bike best left dead. If I really wanted to do the sensible thing I would have bought a car instead.

Change of topic. I got a couple free tickets to a pre-season game up Green Bay way so Donut and I are going to say 'hey' to Dennis.
