Had a decent ride today...
Headed up 14, then took the high road to rock Wall, and headed east to Mora. From Mora took 94 down to Vegas, shot down 25 to 285, then 41 to 42 and then back down 14.
365 miles day, excellent weather, and great roads. Only two idiots tried forcing me off the road. ; )
I did see a black CR, and an orange oogly, running with a Hardley along 14.

Yes, they are jesse bags.
I wanted to get the Holans, but they are having problems with keeping up with demand.
The Jesse's are high quality, easy on and off, huge, and water tight.
They will set you back about $1300.

It's where riders meet, on the east side of the mountains before heading out on rides.
It's a good place to go early Sundays, if you like to check out other peoples bikes. A lot of old timers bring there classics to show off. I've seen some nice old iron there at times.
In the summer, the crotch rocket crowd like to meet there before heading up the crest road.

There seem to be three distinct camps at Coffee At Dawn. Camp one is the Beemer camp. There are probably about fifty or more, many of which are GS's. There's also a fair number of whatever they call the sport touring bike. And there are a good number of classic old beemers that are fun to look at. Camp two is what I like to call "The PJ's camp" because it's mostly Ducatis and Triumphs. There are fewer of them, but still enough. Then Camp three are everyone else. Most of camp three are japanese of varying styles. You will see an odd Harley knucklehead or Indian or other cool antique. I once saw a really nice Vincent Black Shadow up there.

People in all those camps are usually there from about 0830 or so until 1100 or so. Not much later than 1100. From 1100 on, it's mostly crotch rockets with crotches riding them. Guys who seek to conquer the mountain with blue jeans and tee shirts... and the occasional helmet. Of course, by then, we're well on our way to wherever we're going.

Or I would be. If I could get a friggin day off of work.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good, local upholsterer in or near Abq? Lookin' to re-sculpt & re-cover my seat. Opinions on foam/base density or optional materials would be helpful. Leather coverings need not apply as the bike sometimes gets parked out in the weather.

CJ,
Getting time off seems to be a continuing problem with you. I thought the job change was going to rectify that situation?

Sparky, can't help you, I haven't used any local places to get my seats done.
I've used: http://www.motorbikesaddles.com/Buell%20Seats.htm
He owns a couple of Buells and does very good, high quality work. Very nice seats.

Sparky,

Check out Clyde's Auto & Furniture upholstery at 2322 2nd Ave NM (505) 247-1176. They just did a guy in our office's BMW and did a supurb job. They do a lot of street rods and the such and have done a lot of bikes.

Yeah, well, I am sure it will... but I also knew that the opening would be intense and require a lot of hours. I just didn't count on it being this busy this soon.

Do any of you know if I can replace the handlebar of my 1125 with one from a clipon? Vortex sells replacement bars for $15 a piece, and they look to be about the same size and length as OEM on the Buell. I think my right bar is bent a bit after my wreck... not too badly, but it feels strange riding it.

I would think if the bar length and diameter are the same, it would be fine.

Meanwhile, I've been spotting Buells left & right.

Two days ago on Paseo Del Volcan between the hospital and Cleveland HS, saw a blacked out Lightning going toward Bernalillo.

Yesterday afternoon, on my way home from work, on Paseo Del Volcan, saw a yellow Blast headed west. Sounded like it had been tuned up with a new exhaust, etc. Sounded pretty good to me!

Later yesterday, maybe 6pm or so, saw a red CR and a black 1125R west bound on 550.

Of course, each time I was in my truck. I'm off today so I'm going for a ride later. Getting my son ready to go to a job interview at the hospital. He's moving back up here from Las Cruces and needs to have a job to pay for his apartment. The entry level jobs at the hospital are starting out at some pretty good rates. He applied to be a "transporter" for Radiology and it starts at $11.44/hr for no experience, requires only a HS Diploma. After he's done that, we're going to take a spin on the bikes.

Of course, he was very anxious to get on his. He came home Wednesday night while I was at school and when he was getting his SV out from between the Firebolt and the dirt bike, he somehow knocked the mirror right off the left side of the Firebolt. Broke the whole stem at the base. Looks like the plastic sheared right off. Weird.

I dont know if the sizes are exact, but my CBR has vortex clip-ons that I can compare the bar size with. I dont know how much Harley wants for a bar, but I can imagine it would be more than $15... I'll call them and get a quote too...

Strange that the mirror just snapped off. no fall or anything?

And for those that dont know... The Buell handlebars ARE bike specific. They have an internal thread at one end to be screwed in, and a notch at the same end that fits into a groove on the inside of the top triple tree. a standard clip-on does not work.

So, last week I noticed a low growl from the primary/clutch area when I put it in gear and initially thought the primary chain was in need of adjustment. I pulled the inspection cover and the oil was contaminated with water, wtf? The chain was a little loose (total slack measured at 3/4") so I adjusted it cold iaw manual, drained and refilled with F+, new insp cover gasket, new drain plug o-ring...growl is still there. I've been unable to get any further input from anyone but I suspect the clutch and/or front primary sprocket bearings are toast. About ready to truck it to SF HD and hope Scott can tell me wtf is wrong.

Anyone have an opinion before I do so?

I recently replaced the gasket on my X1 primary and found some water as well, no growl, but I usually replace the primary oil every 5k miles

So I rode up to Colorado to burn up the last of my rear tire.
Despite the weather, I had a nice 860 mile ride through some of my favorite roads, and discovered a new one east of Gunnison.

Just had my new tire mounted yesterday, and wiped the grim off the bike. I'm readty for this weekend!

So... Those of you, that ARE going to SpringFast, I would like to meet Friday morning, at the Denny's in the truck stop on 98th street, and I-40 around 9AM. We can eat and pick up any last minute items.
I would like to be rolling by 10AM, which should get us into Alpine around 4PM.
It's 180 miles to Quemado, I'm not sure if the Buells can make it that far on a tank of gas, so we will be stopping outside of Grants just before we head south on 177, and then again in Quemado. After that, everything is about 100 miles apart, easy for the Buells to reach.

I think two people are looking for someone to share rooms with, so if someone wasn't going to go because all the rooms were booked, here's your second chance.

Looking forward to this, as usual, and hoping the weather holds out!

Didnt you just get that bike? how many miles have you put on that thing to need a new tire already?

Sorry Sparky... cant really help. I'm not what you would call mechanically gifted... I can do basic maintenance, but that is about as far as my skills go.

Sparky,
sorry to hear about the "growling" from your engine. I would go ahead and pull the clutch, and primary chain and inspect the bearings. Also, while you are in there, inspect the primary chain tensioner.
If it's stock, it may be worn beyond it's service limits. I would try that before entrusting it to Santa Fe. Just my 2 cents...

Adam, I've got 5000 miles on it now, not bad for 40 days, eh?

"I've got 5000 miles on it now, not bad for 40 days, eh?"

So, Bart that's what it's like to be independently wealthy & spend all your days riding eh?

I'll check the tensioner, hopefully it's just that simple. I don't know why but, I believe that the water in the case has nearly wrecked at least one of the bearings, although it ONLY does it in gear. I was kinda hoping someone would chime in and say "Yep, that's what happened to mine, it was the _____" I just changed the oil last month or about 1000 mi ago. I'm mechanically inclined but my experience with bikes is limited.

You don't seem all that keen on SF HD? I was told Scott up there was pretty well educated as a Buell tech. No?
