Just to confirm the dates and places... Friday July 27th we meet and stay in Woodland at the Lakeside Motel. Sat July 28th and Sun July 29th we stay in Bend OR at the Econo Lodge. Everyone in agreement? Need to make some calls today to confirm the rooms, rates and availablity. | ||

Hey Loni, We had talked about staying in The Dalles or Hood River on the first night instead of Woodland. This would not be further for the Canadians since they always seem to ride the long way around Mt. St. Helens anyway, although it would be a bit further from home for you guys - it would give us a closer starting point to the roads in Central and Eastern Oregon. I'll try to get some route proposals to you soon. Just want to know if that is an option first. Thx! MG | ||

Those roads are heaven did a few of them on way down to salt lake a few years back. those should be on the list of for sure - not maybe ...if at all possible | ||

Looks like alot of the Canadians will be doing the coast on Friday and meeting up in Bend on Sat. (Jimmy, Dave, poss Harv) MG if we kept the idea of meeting up in Woodland would it be much further of a ride the way you are thinking? Instead of going to Estacada head for the Dalles/Hood River from Woodland? | ||

Loni Riding the coast to get to Bend shouldn't take priority over the routes planed by our gracious hosts. If meeting in the Dalles or Hood River provides access to amazing roads, we’re all over that. Plan away and keep me posted. Thanks | ||

Jimmy, if the coast is calling you then by all means do it!  I just wanted to be sure that MG knew and that if we plan another meeting up place other than Woodland he should plan accordingly. Waiting on MG to see what he comes up with. And then we can finalize the route, places to stay ect... | ||

Hi all, Wow, it looks like it's going to be a good group! Here are some thoughts for you to consider (get out your maps!) Saturday route: Leaving from the Dalles: South on Hwy 197 to Maupin, Bakeoven (speed test) road to Shaniko - stop at top of twisty open canyon road for obligatory pictures and videos as we run down and up and down again the 3 miles or so of twisties - then east to Fossil (FunJimmy's favorite road last year - in reverse) Then short route: Direct SE to Service Creek OR Long route (Green Eric's request) North to Condon, East on Hwy 206 then South on 207 to Spray and West to Service Creek. Estimated miles for day (from the Dalles to Bend): Short Route: 256 mi. Long Route: 327 mi. South to Mitchell (good twisties!) then Hwy 26 to Prineville and backroads into Bend. This is why I am suggesting meeting in Hood River or the Dalles. Leaving from Hood River adds 21 miles of freeway, from Woodland adds about 100 miles of freeway. That would make for a long day so if we want to not overdo it and want to ride some of those great NE Central Oregon roads I think that would work better than leaving from Woodland. I haven't checked out the motel situation but I've stayed at Cousin's in The Dalles and it was fine. Hood River is nicer but probably more expensive. The other option is to leave from Woodland, head to Portland and follow 224 south as we did last year then maybe ride over to Timothy Lakes on Hwy 26 and through Warm Springs Reservation, which is a nice road but might be HOT that weekend. Then we could do some of the loop I suggested on Sunday. But based on last year I'm wondering if some people will be heading home on Sunday and if so it would be more fun (I think) to have the group together for the ride East (especially between Maupin and Fossil - everyone should do that!) On Sunday I thought we could do part of the ride that a small group of us did on Monday last year... That is the Post-Paulina road between Prineville and John Day, and then head back on Hwy 26. That is about at 320 mile round trip with lunch in John Day. | ||

A follow up note: There are still some more great roads further east than the routes I am proposing but I think they would require us staying in Baker City or another Eastern Oregon city 1 of the nights rather than 2 nights in Bend. Maybe we could do that on a future SPLASH ride if everyone wants to spend 2 nights in Bend again this year. We're looking forward to having you over for BBQ again this year! | ||

Also I have emailed them to see about dicounted rates if we were to book 5-10 rooms. Need to get more feed back from everyone....I personally like the idea But it needs to be a group decission. | ||

MG That proposed route from Dalles (or Hood River) heading through Fossil sounds like a great suggestion. Like Mike said, it's one of my fav's. Would be nice to ride some of the wooded areas of Oregon too if poss. There's just so much great geography in Oregon. :-) | ||

I got a hold of the Econo Lodge in Bend today. Rhonda has set aside 10 rooms for us July 28th and 29th. Everyone needs to call and book your rooms. Talk to Rhonda and tell her you are with the SPLASH group and she will make sure you get our great pricing of $55 a night. 1-800-507-2211 or 541-382-7711. Just keep checking here for info and make your reservations as I post the #'s and dates (see my last post for making reservations in Bend), show up and you are good to go! Thanks for the invite Loni- I'm not entirely sure what I'm getting into but it sounds like a great time. I think I met Jimmy on a ride a few weeks ago at Harstene Island in Mason county. Bob was supposed to come but something came up so we gave him a call to rub it in when we met by accident at the Bakery there. I've made reservations with Rhonda! Any plans solid for Friday evening? I was looking at riding Highway 7 to 12, 12 to 82, and then 82 to 97, and then 97 to 84 if we were to stay in the Dalles or Hood River | ||

I made a decision today....hope you all don't mind. I called the Cousins Country Inn in the Dalles and talked to Barb and the rates for rooms are $107.00 + tax (9 percent) for 2 queen beds, and $98.00 + tax for a king. Thanks for setting this up Loni. Appreciate you doing the organization and getting some great deals on rooms. I'm going to go ahead and reserve one of the rooms with 2 queen beds assuming someone might want to split the cost. Worse case, its only another 9 bucks which luckily won't break the bank. Let me know if anyone wants to split the room with me. |
