Sh*t happens to the best of us at times. :-(

I've got a set of OEM passenger pegs Neil. No springs, ball bearings or clips (still using those pieces with the wife's aftermarket pegs), just the actual pegs themselves, but they're yours anytime.

I'm fine and thanks for the offers. I will fix the bike throughout the winter and consider taking a advanced course.

I feel your frustration Dennis. Whatever the reason, this year has been a bad year for COBRA rides. I've been going out and leading rides with the Columbus Motorcycle group on MeetUp more and more. Although it's mainly cruisers I simply forewarn everyone that rides I lead are more twisty and fun then normal. :-)

As well as the periodic 1/4 mile gravel driveways, uphill, after a rainfall to get to lunch...right Dennis? LOL

We could have fun with the cruisers ride a little bit then wait for them. My wife and I was there today for dinner they are closed on mondays. Not on the MC

No. I'm not financially able to pull the trigger, so I'm avoiding demo's at all costs. I did go sit on the Yamaha Super Tenere for awhile. It was large, but most definitely doable. The girlfriend loved the back seat. Even with its 600+ pound girth, I was easily able to get it on the center stand unassisted. That's impressive!

Triumph just announced the Tiger 1200. That one is more my style than the 800. If I was solo, the 800XC is my favorite of them all as well, but my next many rides will be 2up with camping gear, and I'm not convinced the 800 will handle the weight well (the power will be no problem, it's the suspension I'm worried about). Plus the 800 has a chain, which I am not one bit fond of. The new 1200 is a shaft like the Yamaha.

I'm also planning a Grand Canyon trip. 4 trips actually, all from 1-2 weeks. All still in the dreaming stages, but I've got some details up on my site, scroll down to Planning for my Next Ride(s): http://www.mikef5000.com/motorcycle-stuff.html

On a Buell related note... I visited Uly today in intensive care. After several surgeries, she's being put back together, hopefully for the final time! Of course she's only being worked on by the best of doctors... Mitch and Neil at Farrows downtown.

Heart and Tailbone

Torso

A terrifying amount of small parts

Shawn, what did you think of the 800XC?

I might be changing my train of thought. Instead of replacing Uly with a bigger dirtier counterpart, keep that for 2-up and road touring. I'm now toying with the idea of replacing the Lightning with a smaller dual sport. I listed my "wants" in a solo dual sport machine were as follows:

Commute the 10-15 miles each way to work and back a few days a week (some highway, but 60-65 mph is plenty, not expecting more than that)

Do some backroad/'twisty' blasting

Burn up gravel/dirt roads

Do some trail/dirt road overnight trips (WV?)

Start riding with the local AdvRiders on their weekend dirt/gravel/trail rides

In the long run, I'd like to be able to do some more dirty distance stuff: the Trans-Lab, Baja, TAT, continental divide trail?, etc. I want a bike that can cross the country one way on dirt (TAT?) and cross the country back on backroads, with nothing more than a tire/oil change.

The responses all said Yamaha WR250R. I was blown away at the idea of a 250cc doing this (I was looking at 400-450's), but they are insistent!

My possible Uly replacements are only new, and in the $13-15k range. Ouch. Probably doable next year with a trade-in and financing, but I'm scared of financing now that I have a mortgage too.

Lightning replacement (WR250R) is $3000-$4000 (used), which is in the vicinity of what the Lightning would sell for.

wolf, not gonna happen lol my two young kids are a remninder of the risks involved.. plus i already have a money pit in this new jeep! woo hoo!

mike, i LOVED the tiger! i'm thinking adventure riding is the next chapter for me. but i want something i can take my son on trips and stuff with me. plus as a replacement for my only bike it can't be a lightweight. i called corbin, they're working on passenger back rest, seats, etc. from what i saw in articles and stuff the triumph hard bags aren't very tough (besides i don't really like the looks) check out twistedthrottle.com, lots of adventure stuff, might go with the pelican cases they look sweet! i checked out the f800gs too, i don't know, guess i'm not a beamer guy. the seat was def not as good (just like they say)...but they,moto-something near ricart, had a 2010 for a grand off. that sweet orange color too.

i love the idea of getting with the local adv riders and seein whats up. i'm in!

As finances are dictating, I'm going to keep the Uly, and try to trade in the lightning. It's for sale various places (AdvRider, ThumperTalk) as well as here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 657472.html.

I'm looking to trade it up for a Yamaha WR250R. A fuel injected <300 lb. dual sport with 30(!) hp (double that of the Honda CRF230 I rode in the off-road classes). As with the bike it's replacing, it's intentions are strictly solo use, but it should be capable of anything I want to throw at it (as long as it's 75 MPH our less!). It will no doubt take me on any trail/dirt road I can find around Ohio... but more than that is the fact that the thing has the same payload as my Uly, and will cruise at 70 all day long, so throwing camping gear on the back and exploring WV or the Appalachian Mountains for a couple days (or weeks) should be cake. Plus, Super Moto parts are available... you know... just in case... for the future...

I'm not going to give the lightning away, so if no opportunities arise, I'll reassess what I want to do come spring. But as of right now, both the lightning and the WR250R values are about identical, so if I can get the swap done with next to no out of pocket, it seems like a winner.}

A group on ADVrider is working on finishing the TAT right now, they're reassessing the PA stretches (that have mostly been paved), and finishing it off by running it to the Atlantic Ocean.

If you think the TAT is good... whatever you do, don't look up the Continental Divide Trail. I haven't put it on the website yet... but man, what a ride! Nothing like riding from Canada to Mexico on nothing but dirt/gravel mountain passes.

Oh, and 2013... Do the TAT out half way, turn south on the Continental Divide Trail, shoot the extra couple hundred miles west to see the Grand Canyon, then head home on historic route 66! It's a winner all around!

Jeesh. I need to get out from in front of ADVrider and Google maps.

well i did it. after 12 years and five buells and one tattoo it's time for a change.traded the cr in on a tiger 800 in sexy venom yellow. i'm headin for some adventure riding! ok so prob just some dirt roads and maybe gravel here and there.. lol but what the hell life is short! as far as the tiger so far, i'd say it lacks the character of all the buells i've had but does everything real well. all around smooth, powerful refined machine. fun as hell to ride.
mike5000 this is all your fault! if you hadn't posted that xc pic!! lol but seriously, if you wanna take her for a spin just hit me up and take her out.

i'm gonna keep lurking around and help out buellers when i can. it's tough. didn't sleep very well last night : ( i love the bad web and love the buell family

Sorry to see you leave the Buells behind Shawn. But it's not the machine that matters nearly as much as the spirit of getting out and riding!

I'm still gonna call you up for tire change assistance in the Spring, Buell or no Buell!

That makes two of us then! Well, alright, I'm just leaving one of two Buells. Trading the lightning for this next week:

I'm also ready for a change of pace. If I could use the lightning for what it's made for (twistys and/or track) it'd be a harder decision. But other than a few rides down straight flat country roads, the only thing I've done on that bike over the past year or two is ride to work and back.

I wanted to trade the Uly for an adventure tourer, but new they are double what the Uly is worth. This bike is a straight trade for my lightning.
Plus I'm getting the Uly back this week after mucho work, with an all new Harley warranty... so I should probably hang onto it and ride it for a bit!

If you're looking to start riding off pavement, AdvRider has an "Adventure in Ohio" thread that is excellent! Rather than making individual posts, AdvRider uses more of a continuous blog type of setup for a lot of the more popular threads. Hard to get used to! The Ohio thread is over 2700 pages long, but they arrange rides for almost every saturday and sunday, and they're a mix of dirt and gravel. Almost always 'big bike' friendly. Keep some 50/50 tires on that thing and lets get dirty!
Adventure in Ohio can be found in here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f= 27

yeah i thought that forum set-up was wierd. i need to practice getting over curbs first. the learning curve is going to be steep for me! i've never even rode dirtbikes lol that bike you're gettin looks like it could handle the western tat no problem! after seeing some pics of it i don't think my tiger could handle that stuff
