So the rod that holds the valves broke. I've never hear of this happening. I'm shocked and upset. Anyone else heard of this happening? There weren't any warning signs like the throttle feeling tight or sticking that would have sent stress from that rod through the cable. I'm in disbelief. It needed a back tire and I don't have the equipment to do that myself so I sent it to Baltimore Buell to diagnose and they reported this info to me yesterday. +$400 for the part +$400 for the labor means that it isn't getting fixed right away. I'll tear it apart when I get the chance and get my eyeballs on it.

On a different note... Has anyone else ever broke a tooth off a gear? I think I'm missing tooth/teeth on 3rd.

I don't abuse it, I promise.

if you search for throttle body shaft or throttle shaft you'll find this has happened to a bunch of us. i don't remember the exact price of my repair but it was probably close to what you were quoted - because you can't just get the shaft, you have to replace the entire throttle body. some folks who are better wrenches than i am have removed the shaft and either had the valve brazed on or otherwise repaired. somebody has even had a replacement part milled. it has happened enough that i tried to get it replaced by H-D even though I was out of warranty but that didn't fly either. mine broke right at the point where one of the two screws that hold the valve goes in. anyway, if you post on the BB&D forum you'll probably get testimony from others that this has happened to. My only warning was a couple "stumbles" at highway speeds just before it died. Not really any warning. There are also others who are trying to see if this shaft breakage correlates with folks who did a crankcase rebreather reroute ( like I did) - the theory being the lack of oily gases going back over the valve results in less lubrication and therefore more breakage. I don't think they ever came to a conclusion on that one. At any rate, it sucks. Been there and I appreciate the pain you are going through. I used to go to H-D Buell in Frederick but when i moved a little bit I was much closer to Old Glory in Laurel, MD. I've had good luck with those guys

Heading up to summit point to do a track day. A half mile from the track I hit a deer. Luckily I stayed on the bike. Buell 1, deer 0. It's scratched the plastics from the front to the back and broke the clutch lever.
I was at the track the next day and Roger Lyle mentioned this. Making any other days? I'll be doing the 8th.

In any case this looks like the most active spot for MD buellers to post? I just moved back in the area and am in New Market. Some niiiice roads up this way!

I ride an 1125r that is alternately white/black and maybe soon red.

Howdy Smoke...New Market area is great riding...I often zig-zag across 40 and 70 looking for twisty lanes and dirt roads.

Smoke,

Does that make me famous...or infamous? : )
Next track day for me is Sunday, August 21st. I ride an 1125R Black & Blue alternately with some deer fur. : )
See you soon.

I don't think there were any animal activists around, so I'd say you gain some fame from that encounter. I might do the 21st as I will have no time September for any track fun. Never done shenandoah though. How is it on the 1125?

Smoke,
How is it on the 1125?___ Work; but, a lot of fun.
I'm a newbie at the trackday stuff. Summit Point Circuit is higher top end ... Shenandoah tests your turning skills. Let me know if you decide on the 21st.

I'm pretty certain my old man and myself will be making the 21st. gotta pay soon to get the discount tho! i will post up by the 11th if I'm going.

Had a great day yesterday on the main circuit -actually saw 150 on the main straight and was near the top of the intermediate melee throughout. met a PA bueller on a CR and his buddy as well. good times.

Smoke,

Good deal. I heard 150+ was possible on that track. I need a few more Shenandoah trackdays before going buellistic on the Summit Point Circuit. Shenandoah's straight might be good for 115-120.

It will be great to see another Buell or two...especially if I hit another deer and need a spare lever. : )

To the Marylanders - After 7 years in & around the DC area, I bought a house in Takoma Park and must become an official MD resident. This means I also have to title & register by bike in MD. Any recommendations for a "quick & easy" (wink, wink) state safety inspection?

The bike was previously titled in WI, where they don't require these types of inspections. So, I'm a bit concerned I might fail - three potential problem areas jump out to me immediately:
1. HID lights (they're white not blue... but HID none-the-less),
2. The factory race exhaust (too loud?), and
3. An intermittent speedo/odo (it's on the list of items they inspect).

How close do they look at these things? Anyone here failed the inspection as a result of these items?

you should be fine, thought that exhaust *may* be an issue. Could offer to use my slip on but well, you have the factory race pipe LOL. HID's shouldnt be an issue. Best to have factory rear fender/mud guard thing -I've been nicked for that one several times. Thankfully its only a one time deal.

Dunno about TakPark, but I bet youll find some lenient inspectors nearby.

Maryland inspection is pretty thorough. They will check for items such as side reflectors, yellow in front, red in rear. If the bike was meant to carry a passenger from the factory then it better have rear pegs and a grab rail. Mostly common sense items such as decent brake pads, etc....
Good Luck

Pellis,
How was the WV weekend? Survive the T-storms?

2kx1,
I did another trackday. You have to grab your Duc friends and join me for one. No bicyclists, AA Co's Finest, speed limits, or giant squirrels.

Coops - for inspection, Maryland does not have a db rule. pipes can be as loud as they want...as long as there are physical baffles in it. take a diagram of the muffler with you showing it is chambered, and you should be fine.

rear hugger/fender is a must.
rear red and rear-side red reflectors
front fork amber reflectors
hid - not a problem if they are aimed properly
tires - tread depth, dryrot
brakes
fluid leaks
front fender is a must
speedo/odo could be an issue. fiddle with the sending unit / speed sensor first, see if that gets it in line. also check your grounds to the front fork/triple trees, and do a wiggle-test on the large connector on the back of the gauge. especially if you have hid's (and the wiggling/poking/shuffling stuff that came with their install)...you might have a loose or weak ground up front that can cause all sorts of wonkiness.

if you have a friendly inspector, make it abundantly clear that you are KEEPING the motorcycle and not inspecting it for resale. that can help, especially if you say "I have a new speedo on order" ; )

good news is, once you get it done once...you never have to do it again.

oh - and make sure to explain the "you have a headlight out" feature first!

Thanks Rat + all for the insight.

Huge relief that the muffler won't be an issue. On the speedo/tach, I've pulled and cleaned the speedo sensor a couple of times, no dice. Haven't checked the grounds, so thanks for the suggestion. My best guess is a wire somewhere is chafed. Should be good to go on everything else.

Also, in a not altogether shocking coincidence, my low beam HID just went out - glad I went with the 35w and saved the stock wiring/bulbs!

The WV Buell Rally V was a lot of fun. Great people, great roads and lots of great food. See what you missed.

It didn't start raining real hard until after I got home.

So who's going to NJ for the races next weekend?

Hope that does the trick!

I buy my bulbs at the local car parts store (Advance Auto, Trak Auto, etc.), by the way...many cars use the same part. They sell a few motorcycle parts too (spark plugs, batteries, etc.).
