Jaxson, here's a reply to questions I posed to a local pro I know. You can see his work at www.jontice.com

Hey Jason,
I am a Canon guy too. I switched from Nikon a long time ago, when everything started getting automated. I still prefer Canon and since I have an investment in them it would take something major to switch me back the other way. The general consensus is that people buy Canon for the lenses, Nikon for the bodies. My continued preference for Canon digital has to do with a) lenses, and b) subtle stuff about the in-camera processing. For some reason the files simply look better and it's hard to describe. I have a 1Ds and a 1Ds mkII. I haven't done much reading about the most current models but I know that the 5d always ends up as the primary camera for pros who won't pay for the top line models, and as the backup body for most of the ones who will. If I was buying a new body now it would be a 5d, I'm pretty sure. Lenses... I sold off my zooms and bought a selection of primes when I went completely digital and gave up film. The zooms didn't hold up quality-wise to the full-frame digital images. I now use these lenses- 24 f1.4; 35 f1.4; 85 f1.2; 135 f2; 200 f1.8 and 17-40 f4 zoom.

Nuts,
With the release of the 7D many have questioned paying a premium for the 5D since it is a newer body and has features the 5D does not.
As far as lenses I agree wholehearteldy. The lenses I held back are all primes however a good selection of primes puts you well above your self imposed $500.00 budget even with the cheapest body.
Keep in mind your buddy is comparing a cropped sensor camera to a full sensor camera when he is discussing his bodies. If you want a full sensor body then you have no choice but to step up to the 5D.

Honky, I am going tomorrow, call me.

Nvts,
According to the Weather Channel we're screwed. Heavy winds and possible rain makes it a futile effort.
Enjoy your trip and lets see if we can get one on the ground when you get back.

Hit a deer last night in the company car @60mph. Car is fine, deer-not so much. Saw a mountain lion 5 minutes before the deer strike.
Time to put knobbies on the BMW.Back home to snow. Where'd all this winter come from? NUTS

Nuts, Glad he didn't come through the windshield. Did the deer wind up in the trunk?Ought to be some kind of consultation for the mishap.
Mountain Lion?? That wasn't Jaxson in his altered state was it? Where was this sighting?

Charlie,
In my altered state I am a Walrus.
Come to think of it, I may be one in my unaltered state as well .

Nuts,
You're an official Virginian now. You've hit a deer and seen a lion which people won't believe. That makes it official.
Your paperwork is in the mail.

Well I've seen more than one cat, but I've never hit a deer(knock on wood)so I guess my Virginia status is still pending.
Jaxson, there are no Walrus's in the mountains and Walrus's don't know how to stalk, so whip out your peace pipe and conjure up the Native spirits and see if they won't give your altered ID and appropriate animal.

I've had my own lion sighting AND I had the wife with me to verify my story. It was DOA off of 220 in Franklin Co. along with the deer it was pursuing or feeding on.
The tail on this thing was as big around as my wrist and at least 3 ft long.
Now feel free to call bullcrap but as I said the wife saw it too since we stopped to view the carnage.

As far as my Native guide, I am actually a rattlesnake but I keep that to myself so people won't try to whack my head off with a shovel.

Nuts,
I got me a care package like no other coming next week. 6 GORGEOUS orange and black youngsters to add to the future breeding stock. YAY ME!!

Aren't you supposed to be selling youngsters? I think you got your leads crossed. Isn't it about time to think about trading the roddy in too? You need a new bike, like the new Ducati Diavel Cruiser. Google it honky. NUTS

Oh I checked it the day you told me about it. I hate to say it but that bike is FUGLY! Nothing can take the place of the mighty Roddy V.

Selling comes next year. This year is for building the empire and setting myself up for future success.

Hunting when my good man? I've been needing me some loins.

Nuts,
My wifes great aunt died the other day and I was reading the obituary. She was the previous owner of Tuggles Gap restaurant and motel.
We've been to her house for cookouts and family functions and neither one of us knew that. Small world huh?

Honky, It has been windy and with snow on the ground I was sure the club was a no-go so I didn't ask. My next availability is probably Saturday; and then Monday. I'm up for a try and you can play with the Canon while I play Elmer Fudd. Remind me to tell you how my brother-in-law shot a horse on Monday.

In motorcycle news... I knocked out my first tire change yesterday. Cold tires are not easily persuaded on/off the bead. The knobbies are mounted on the BMW and I was able to use only 3 tire levers and some WD-40. These are tubed tires and I feel somewhat confident doing this on the side of the road/trail if I had to. In the near future I am going to change tires on the KTM in the yard with just a hand pump; that ought to make setting the bead interesting! NUTS

Nuts, A helpful suggestion, put a tube or jar of Vasoline P. Jelly in your back pocket to use on the bead........also will help your battered hands.

Nuts,
What say about Monday morning?
Gonna be crazy cold and overcast. Perfect weather if the wind isn't wailing.
I figure get there at 5:15, be in place by 5:45, drag our deer out at 8:15.
Let me know.

I think to maximize our chances we should go in the a.m.
Maybe we can hold off until 6:00 and be in the woods by 6:45 so it won't be such a long wait until daylight.
