Honky, my Pops and I are having serious issues with our muzzleloaders at the range. We are sure to start with a clean bore before every shot and can get decent groups at 50 yds. But move back nearer 100 and things go really wonky. We are also using a Lead Sled rest so it isn't entirely the jerk behind the scope doing the jerking. We'll get a shot that was on-target at 50 to be 16 inches high at 100. We'll clean and the move the turret down 16 clicks (1/4" per click at 100yds) and the next shot will be a foot low. This has ocurred with the shockey's and now Pops reports the same with Pyrodex pellets. Any advice? I'm headed out today and am limiting myself to 50 yds as the gun consistently shoots well for me at that range. NUTS

McNutbag,
Sorry I missed your call. Was getting me some sleep before the big Halloween festivities.
As far as your muzzleloader, if its not flinching then it is likely one of two things. Scope mounting or inconsistancy between loads. You mention decent groups at 50 yards. If that means a group of 6 inches then that translates into a HUGE grouping at 100 yards. I'd recommend working on your loading techiniques and stick with 50 yards until you can get that 50 yard group down to an inch or so.
If you find that the 50yard groups are not repeatable then check and recheck your scope, mounts, loading techinque, and then finally the shooter. Lead Sleds help but its still a mental game knowing the gun is gonna go boom.
Also keep in mind the bullet is going relatively slow when compared to a modern centerfire round so any shooter error will be more evident.
Hope that helps

Yep I'm part of the organ transplant team.
I picked up a bike, work table from your friend over on Pitzer Lane last night. Said he slapped it together 30 years ago from exhaust tubing and plywood. Wonder if you've ever spilled any oil on it or had to turn a wrench from it? Anyways, I'm happy to give it a good home. NUTS

Sorry Nuts. My schedule has been a bit crazy as of late. Usually don't even get up until you're in bed.
I'll try to figure out a good time to catch you cause it sounds as though you may have had some luck or at least an epic tale to tell.

Charlie,
Headed your way tomorrow. Figures it would be just as cold there as it will be here. What happened to those warm Fall days?
I think you been pulling my leg with stories of shorts and short sleeve weather late in the season. I almost fell for it but now I know your devious ways.

Jaxson,
Your riding in on a North Wind, what can I say. It's gonna warm up soon as you leave.Back in the mid seventies. This is about as cold as it gets over here by the beach. Stick a couple of those Pygmy Rattlers in your pocket...they'll keep you warmed up.

Two things Charlie,
First, I found out ya'll have more than one hardwood tree.
Second, Columbia is CRAZY! 13 freakin' exits and each one ends up on another highway. Traffic that is worse than Washingto DC. This place is ridiculous. Now I see why you miss tiny little Roanoke.
The hotel is across the street from the mall and it takes up like 3 city blocks.
I ain't never in my life seen a place like this.

Nuts, there are some things that a person is better off not experiencing. The easy going simple life is getting harder to find. If we could only go back to the days of "Andy and Opie", and maybe a little bit of Barney.

Nuts,
I shall give you a ring on Thursday so we can talk cameras. Hope you have a safe journey even though you have kept your destination top secret.

Charlie,
Getting ready to pull outta this crazy place. I will NEVER complain about Roanoke again. Been gone 2 days and I miss the mountains, slow pace, and especially the friendly people. This place has the rudest people I have ever met. It was so bad I threatened to beat the snot out of the waiter at the Outback last night.
I made sure we had all our food and beverages before telling him he was gonna get an a$$ whooping .
So to sum it up, you can keep this place Charlie. I feel for ya' buddy.

Charlie,
It was a culmination of everything and it just came to a head Saturday at the restaurant. It started Saturday morning in the hotel lobby and then the mall. I guess the waiter just capped it off.
Besides, my steak sucked so he had it coming anyways .
I'll take your word for it but I swear it seemed like everyone had a chip on their shoulders and couldn't even take the time to say thanks if you held the door for them. The first 2-3 times I just let it slide cause I'm nice like that, then I would holler out "your welcome" and they'd just stare at me like I had a head injury or something. I did meet a nice old man who was picking up trash at a gas station out in the country on the way home. We talked for about 30 minutes. He had lived a fine, simple life and I could appreciate his stories.
Sooooooo glad to be home.
Nuts I ain't EVER going to Florida if its like that .

Jaxson, Sorry your trip was less than enjoying. I find most of the locals very friendly and courteous, it's generally the northern transplants that are not and sometimes they don't even realize their abruptness. Butt there are "butt heads " everywhere, not just from the north.
I can only imagine the mix in Miami.

Well it wasn't a total loss Charlie.
The show was incredible and I came home with some high end goodies to add to my breeding stock .

Those pics of Wades Gap make me smile. Those fellas ride their bikes on it and during the Summer I cruise it every other evening looking for Timbers and Copperheads. I guess it is a multi purpose road.

Charlie,
I road cruise most of it due to it being private property. I do have permission to hunt the land in 2 areas right off of Wades on a little road called Websters. Follow it to the end and you come out near the little white Church pictured above.
I got permission on the same night when I was stopped in the middle of the road trying to wrangle a frog and the people came out to see if I needed help. Got to talking and showed off my book of photos and they extended the invitation. They both think I'm crazy and laughed a bit but didn't judge me.
The funny thing is I was asked to remove all Copperheads but please leave the Timbers alone other than photos or taking them back towards the mountain if they are near the houses/buildings. I found it pretty neat that these two old gentleman didn't look upon them as the devil but rather a useful tool to keep rodent populations in check.
Anyways, good people out there .

At the peak of Wades gap there is a gravel road that runs off toward somewhere. That's called Kinsey Tract. If you look up you'll see this really neat Medieval tower. I think it's there to repel the city slickers.
If you like Wade's you're sure to enjoy Cahas Mountain Road. Scenic for sure. NUTS

Nuts,
The XSI has a few minor advantages but its something you have to decide if its worth the money.
The 3 that stand out are
More mega pixels
quicker shooting rate
Improved metering mode

All EF lenses are compatible with every model of Canon DSLR cameras. The Ef-S lenses are compatible with 98% of their product line.
The 18-55 kit lens is an IS lens so you should get some decent shots with it. Keep in mind 55mm zoom is very little so don't expect to be able to pull in subjects in the distance. I'd recommend adding their 75-300mm lens to the mix. Its a cheapie but gives good shots. With those two lenses you have virtually every focal distance you would be using covered.
Here's an example of the 75-300 lens extended to 300 and handheld, cropped in DDR.
