It is. Red River to Angel Fire to Black Lake to Mora to Sipapu to Embudo Station for lunch. Then Embudo back through Dixon to Penasco, then up the high road to Taos, then to Questa and back to Red River. About a 140 mile trip.

Good route... one my favorites. In fact, I could do the Mora-Dixon part multiple times and enjoy it.

Anything for Sunday or is that day just for getting home?

Sunday is just for getting home, but there's no reason not to take the scenic route. I personally would like to go Red River to Questa to Taos to Tres Piedras to Tierra Amarilla to Espanola to home. If there's time, maybe to through White Rock and Jemez Springs.

Any Friday evening plans?
Is there a designated eating/meeting place?

Good question. I have the day off. Just kinda worked out that way. I figured I'd wait until Ed got off work around 4pm and go up sometime in that range. Anthony will be out of school then, too.

I don't know if it's still there, but there was a cool old restaurant that looked like it used to be a gas station on the main drag in Red River. Just east of the big park, I think. I'm pretty sure that's walking distance from the hotel. I'm pretty sure it's a steak house. Unless anyone has a better suggestion? I'm sure we'll get feedback from CO people, too. Possibly five minutes before.

Snapped a belt today on the 1125R... lasted almost 9K miles.

Yeah, Ed mentioned that today. At least that's not the bike you're riding to Red River.

I have managed some good starts...Now I need to manage some good finishes.

I had my best SuperTwins race EVER yesterday...fastest laps ever. I was "gang stuffed" in turn five but other than that, I had a lot of fun. The new ECM and Exhaust definitely helped but the temperatures, tire pressures, and suspension settings were on a sweet spot.

As for the belt issue it happened on the SuperStreet race...frustrating but not a points race.

This is the first belt that has ever broken on me - on any Buell. There were no signs of cracking, tearing etc. It went suddenly and tore neatly across. Since I had so much confidence in previous belts, I didn't have a spare with me so my day was done.

I've also never had a belt break. I'm still on my original Gates belt on my '03 9R. 25K miles.

If you're keeping the 9R, you should get a spare (or two) before they are no longer available... I don't think HD is obligated to provide parts for '03 bikes and the belt on that particular bike was/is different (shorter due to higher gearing)from the most current ones - ie. on the 1200 and 1125 bikes. Even the CityX has the larger sprocket.

Well, I'll have to ask, but I thought that no matter what when I got a new belt I was going to have to upgrade the sprocket. The Goodyear belt is bigger and requires a bigger rear sprocket to make it work. That's one of the reasons I was putting it off.

But you're right. I'll have to order some spares of key items. Since it's pretty apparent by reading BadWeb threads that belts are hard to come by, I'll probably start there.

Good question. I'm really trying hard not to since I'm bringing my son and don't want to be at the front. With Murrae arriving at an unknown time due to the demo fleet being at his shop, he won't be the guy either.

Do you want to volunteer, Nick? If not, I might ask Luis. He's SUPPOSED to show up on his Ducati.

Google says it's 114 miles from Red River to Mora to Embudo. It quotes a three hour travel time, but we know that's not right. I'm thinking it's more like two hours. I have our lunch set for 1230 at Embudo. So, since we normally go kickstands up around 0900-0930, that gives us some time to kill. I think guys like to stop and see stuff on the way besides gas stations, so I thought we could stop at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire. It's been some time since I've been there and probably that's the case for most. That would easily suck up an hour.

Google says the return, Embudo to Penasco to Taos to Red River is only 80 miles. I thought a stop on the high road for photos and scenery would be nice. Even if we take 90 minutes for lunch, that puts us back in Red River by 4pm at the LATEST. Dinner at six or so at Roberto's.

Thoughts?

There are two potential stops on the way out... Vietnam Memorial and the Alpaca Farm/Gift Shop (right before Mora). We could also make a fuel stop in Mora so that the smaller XBs don't get yellow lights before Taos. (If you think we need to kill some time before lunch)

Re: Taos...have you given any consideration to avoiding this town? We can avoid Taos and the drive to Questa entirely and cut back across 64 to AngelFire and Red River the back way and it will only take an extra 15-20 mins. At the wrong time, Taos is like Espanola...to be avoided.

As for leading the parade, I can do it. I've done it before and I know the way.
However, like you, my plan was to stay back with the wife.

Also, on Sunday, I'm thinking of taking a ride up the Taos ski area and also finding that "famous" German Restaurant for lunch.

I would lead but I have only done this route once or twice. As far as avoiding Taos, I could rather not miss the road in between Questa and Red River; that is one of my all time favorites.

However, I wouldn't mind doing it on Sunday if we were gonna do lunch in that german place. Sounds tasty.

just my $.02

The Questa to Red River stretch is indeed a fine road. Wife's favorite...Good pavement, wide lanes w/shoulders, constant rate turns, and good scenery. Its the "drone" between Taos and Questa I don't like.

Rt 64 between Taos and Angel Fire has plenty of curves on it but its a narrower/tighter road with some blind corners.

Either way is fine with me. I was just throwing the Rt 64 idea out there in case we were looking to burn up the day...

Also, I think we will have to have some options this weekend since the weather forecasts 40%+ chance of thunderstorms around the mountains.

Flexibility is the key to airpower...and Buell rides. We might have to modify routes and timing to avoid weather. Dress warm and bring rain gear.

Other than the tourists and traffic, Taos is a nice town...; )

The weather report mentions isolated T-Storms. Still there is a 40% chance of isolated t-storms on Sat and getting soaked makes the rest of the ride miserable especially with lower temps. Be prepared...

The Mora valley and the hills to the west are notorious t-storm build-up areas.

Bumped into a couple from Washington DC at the shop today while picking up swag. They are going west and spending a few days in Santa Fe. Told them about the rally. They will be there in the morning.

Meanwhile, look forward to meeting all of you!!

We are here. Lynn, Jody and myself. Room 220 in the main building. Anyone else around?

Nick, as someone that has way too many hours on the RIVET JOINT and SENIOR SCOUT I know there is NO such thing as flexible Airpower... Despite what you read in the PFE. See you soon....
