I dont know if I'll be trucking my bike and seeking nice roads along the way to unload and ride on or riding the entire way. If someone has a two bike trailer and wants to come along let me know. I can travel quite a ways to begin the trip. I have no route or time frame as yet.

Sleez, I'll have to meet you and continue east from Salt Lake City. Not sure if I'll be driving or riding, I'd prefer to ride and save fuel, if not I'll put the bike in my truck.

Paul, do you think you might take a similar route?

My wife and daughter are hoping to come, but may just fly in for the big dinner and other events of Friday and Sat. Still many details for me to sort out.

day two; 9.25 hrs, 525 miles

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0 &msid=109710933728699821379.00047c4ef35e000d7f45e& z=7

day three; 13.5 hrs, 650 miles

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0 &msid=109710933728699821379.00047c62c2700713de6cc& z=7

day four; 9.5 hrs, 540 miles

total 43.75 hrs, and 2255 miles, i may try to make it in three days instead of four, depends on my vacation time, but i want to enjoy the ride and take loads of pics.

all suggestions welcome.

If my riding partner decides not to go out of Portland I may try and meet up farther south. Would rather ride with some other Buells than be a loner across North Dakota. It would be another Ulysses in Ulysses!

more ulysses history;

Ulysses is located in a romantic nook among the trees on the south bank of the Big Blue River, overlooking the picturesque scenery of the valley. The surrounding country is beautiful in the extreme. Far as the eye can reach, a rolling billowy landscape is seen, checkered with the squares of emerald wheat and waving corn, of finely cultivated farms, while good substantial homesteads indicate the homes of a refined and intelligent people. The blue on either side is lined with heavy timber, including a great many varieties. Its waters are well supplied with the smaller species of fish, and afford ample water-power at this point.
If one stands quietly on the banks of the Big Blue they may hear the stories in the wind of days gone by in what was once a bustling farm community.

The first people of whom there is any account are the Pawnee Indians, followed by the exploring party of General John C. Fremont- then the Mormons.

I'll be on my red '09 XT leaving Colorado Springs early morning on the 14th, Staying in Rapid City, SD that night. Another early morning departure on the 15th and head for Dawson, MN for the night. Early morning of the 16th I'll be east bound and down!

Frank Skinner may be with me from Colorado Springs on, but those plans aren't set in stone yet.

Here's a ride plan:

Yeah I opted to take a different route. I've never been to Ulysses, NE but lived near Omaha for two years. I don't think Nebraska has anything that's worth 8 hours of interstate riding to see ; )

Looks like we will have 4-5 riders out of Portland/NW. As of right now we are planning on being to the Salt Lake area mid day Tuesday the 15th of June. Crashing the night north of Denver. We decided on this route to try and meet up with as many Buells from the west as possible. We are trying to get our route set as soon as we can. Sleez, Kalif. et al. if this sounds good we will continue to plan this more southern route. Our goal is to ride with as many Buells as possible. We are trying to avoid the major interstates as much as possible. If we can get plans semi-set by March 1st that would be great. We are a pretty wild bunch so beware! (most likely wiped from a great twisty long Day one through Eastern OR)

Nwforester,

our current plan has us going through SLC on Monday the 14th around noon.

Sunday the 13th; leave Willits, CA arrive Elko, NV (540 miles)
Monday the 14th; leave Elko, NV arrive Cheyenne, WY (675 miles)
Tuesday the 15th; leave Cheyenne, WY arrive Lincoln, NE with a side trip to Ulysses, NE (500 miles)
Wed the 16th; leave Lincoln, NE arrive in Wisconsin! (540 miles)
Sunday the 20th leave for return to CA

we could probably push it and do it in three days rather than four, but want to enjoy the ride, even if it is slab!!!

return trip this way;

most likely;

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0 &msid=109710933728699821379.00047f9ca4459ec3c2b1c& z=5

want to see this tunnel;

http://www.coloradodot.info/travel/eisenhower-tunn el

The Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel is located approximately sixty miles west of Denver, Colorado on Interstate 70. It is the highest vehicular tunnel in the world, located at an elevation of 11,013 feet at the East Portal and 11,158 feet at the West Portal. The Tunnel traverses through the Continental Divide at an average elevation of 11,112 feet. The facility lies entirely within the Arapaho National Forest and is divided by two counties, Clear Creek County at the East portal and Summit county at the West portal.

The Tunnel and the Continental Divide also separate two watersheds, the Clear Creek Watershed located on the east side and the Straight Creek Watershed located on the west side. Annual snow fall in the area averages 315 inches (26 feet) for the months of November through April.

The Tunnel was originally designed as a twin bore tunnel. Construction on the westbound bore (North Tunnel) began March 15, 1968 and was completed five years later on March 8, 1973. This bore was originally called the Straight Creek Tunnel, and later was officially named the Eisenhower Memorial Bore . Construction on the second bore began August 18, 1975 and was completed four years later on December 21, 1979. This eastbound bore was named after Edwin C. Johnson , a past Governor and U.S. Senator who had actively supported an interstate highway system across Colorado.

Centerline to centerline, the two tunnels are approximately 115 feet apart at the east ventilation building entrance, 120 feet apart at the west ventilation building entrance, and some 230 feet at the widest point of separation under the mountain.

The length of the westbound (north) tunnel is 1.693 miles, and the length of the eastbound (south) tunnel is 1.697 miles (outside face to outside face of the ventilation buildings).

The average grade of both tunnels is 1.64 percent rising toward the west (rising 1.64 feet for each 100 feet on the horizontal). The westbound tunnel curves slightly to the left, about midway into the mountain. The approach grades are steep, being 7 percent on the west approach and 6 percent on the east approach.

Maximum excavated height for the tunnels is 48 feet with a width of 40 feet. However, when driving through the tunnels, the actual height is not apparent. The exhaust and supply air ducts are located above a suspended porcelain enamel panel ceiling and a drainage system is provided underneath the roadway surface. Today, the driver sees only the distance (vertical clearance) from the roadway surface to the ceilings in the tunnels, a distance of 16 feet, 4 inches. However, because of a series of variable message boards mounted from the ceiling, actual clearance is set at 13 feet, 6 inches. The width in both bores provides two traffic lanes of 13 feet each, providing a total travel width of 26 feet. Tunnel maintenance personnel utilize a walkway that runs adjacent to the vehicle travel lanes. The walkway also provides access between the westbound or eastbound tunnels through three cross passageways, which are spaced at 2,000 foot intervals.

The tunnel is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in order to provide a safe and adequate level of service to the motoring public. The current staffing level is set at 52 full-time employees.

Kali,

Do you just want to ride through the Moab area? If you've got some canyoneering or climbing experience I could probably get some guys to meet up with us and do a slot canyon or something. I have some basic gear but no ropes and could bring it along if I drive, I'm sure harnesses and ropes are available for rent down there.

I hiked a little with my wife and daughter last year and did a 10K down there, but haven't been into the really cool stuff yet.

I'm four or so hours from there, but it's close enough, and cool enough that it can be done without too much trouble.

There's some cool photo ops along the way. I know there's a scenic loop not too far out of town, I missed it when I was there due to time constraints though.

I'm still trying to figure out how to do the ride and take care of my daughter and puppy, and the wife's limited vacation is another obstacle to deal with too.

Gonna have to start getting my name on the overtime list at work I guess. Airfare is seldom cheap.
