finding the "right fill level" on XB's is kinda of a "black art" at times. even when you think your doin it correctly as per manual/common sense/experience your particular XB may feel your measuring system to be wrong.

the oil could be disappearing into the throttle body via the breather tubes. this "blowby" is both common and normal depending on riding styles and your XB's way of adjusting its oil level to what it likes

I have adjusted my level to what seemed correct also to have it magically disappear and one frustrating afternoon actually drained and measured the level to find I had the correct amount in the swingarm even though my dipstick procedure told me I was low.
further more, although I cant find it right now, I recall reading in the manual something about normal consumption being 1 qt. every 1200 miles or so and as verified by the manual to check oil every 500 miles to top off for this very reason. even all auto manufacturers have notes in their service manuals about oil consumption (GM says 1qt. every 750 to 1000 miles) is normal.

the way I learned my XB's personal preference was to check level cold right after I changed the oil with a measured 2 1/2 qts and running it only long enough for the oil light to go out and then I check every time before I ride to see if it is near that reference point, 28k miles and still goin strong and have yet to have less than 2 1/4 qts upon change interval

Amy

just finished reading through your post on the QuickBoard also.

some good advice there-dont agree with the synthetic vs dino oil stuff but the break in for everyone around here I know that had an XB they all did consume more oil their first 5k miles.

my XB actually was a problem child until the "rare" problem I had was located and corrected. I also had consumed considerable amounts of oil like 1qt every 400 miles-yes 400 miles and thats where my stories above come into play because after my problem was actually corrected I did still think I had a consumption problem only not as bad as it once was only to find what was "normal"

the problem I had also involved severe pinging during hot and humid days and the dealer was convinced I had no idea what I was talking about. I was back and forth for 6 months with them right to the point they actually thought I was draining the oil myself before I brought it to them. one visit before they believed me was when they changed the oil and marked the drain plug and dipstick and told me to ride the bike for 1k mile and not touch the dipstick or drain plug and return so they can evaluate oil loss. to their "surprise" I was not lying or imagining things but the bike had lost over 2 qts oil after 900 miles of riding. the cause ended up being porosity of the casting of the front cylinder head which Ricky @ Peterson's North found after Buell told him to pull the heads and check valve guides and seats. so after like 7 visits back to dealer with concern and several attempts to rectify my concerns during a 6 month period it was finally corrected. it was a rare occurrence and I was not imagining. my previous post states what I learned after this correction because after all that I was relearning the XB and its nuances.

now I dont consume but maybe 1/2 qt every 2500 miles

call me for more info (305-495-4174)-your problem may not be the same as mine but I can detail more of what I went through because it is too much to type and alot of the previous attempts were valid just not applicable to my personal experience

Ratedx1 how ya doing, I'm not on here much, i am a bit busy, as for the clutch and clutch shell "Basket" ya Harley changes the name of things, unless ur planing on going to a full out race clutch setup I suggest using the factory clutch shell and clutch hub, yes if you change one you should change both, the shell will run you about $375 and the hub about $150. as for the clutch with the factory shell and hub, go for the Screaming Chicken "I ment Eagle" friction, steel, and spring... its rated for 115 pound of torq, it will give you a heavy clutch but that can be solved with a power clutch... the Screaming Eagle clutch is a tough customer, I have 30,000 miles on it with my sporty and the friction disc's look great., and yes the shell and hub took a crap on the the sporty a couple of weeks ago.. Oh ya don't forget to change out the throw out bearing will your at it. Better safe than sorry
