I was just in Wash DC last week. I went to the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show... These are held at big venues all over the country and are usually pretty big. I was really disappointed. MC companies must really be tightening their belts in these bad economic times.

Ducati was the only brand with a corporate/factory display. Nice bikes...

Lee Parks was there selling his line of gloves (Lee Parks Design) and high performance riding training courses.

The big four Jap brands and HD were there and only Kawasaki had a respectable display. The rest were the same as visiting your local dealer. Lots of small aftermarket companies and leather goods...

BMW was conspicuously absent - amazing since they are just introducing the new S1000RR superbike and four-valve boxer engines.

No sign of Buell trying to sell the last ones... No sign of EBR...

Time must be hard...

Nick, that's interesting. I was just thinking about when I attended the Long Beach show in 2006 and how I really enjoyed it. Buell had a booth then and were giving out freebies to anyone who showed them a Buell key.

I got some smokin deals on gear because I went on the last day when booths were being folded up and they'd rather sell it than pack it up and ship it back to wherever. I got my Fieldsheer two piece leathers for $250, and a Tourmaster jacket for my wife for $30.

I was thinking that I'd look up when the shows were coming out west and see about going, maybe Denver or Dallas or Phoenix. Thought I might be able to get some more deals.

I'm going for a ride on Saturday. Probably leave my house around 11am or so. Unknown destination. Somewhere Anthony can get to in not too much of a hurry.

There's an Albuquerque Motorcycle Riders Group ride Sat, leaving from Einstein at Central & Tramway at 0800. Looking to do a ~300 mile loop down to No Scum Allowed Saloon in White Oaks. Would love to see more Buells...

Hey Russell! We did that ride last Saturday with my son. He's 17 and just starting out on his SV650. I'd love to get out with the group, but I'm also committed this Saturday. Be sure to ping us with the next ride and keep an eye out here for other Buell rides.

Cheers!

So, you guys are going to think I'm a little touched in the head, but...

I'm seriously considering doing an Iron Butt ride this year. I think a 50cc, coast to coast in 50 hours. You can do San Diego to Jacksonville in about 2300 miles. It's a couple of long days in a row, but it'll be fun, I think.

I'm going to start planning it. If anyone wants to ride with me, that would be cool.

You don't have to prove anything with an Iron Butt qual amongst Buell riders. Just because you bought a bike with bags and touring pretensions does not mean you have to restrict yourself to Iron Butt rules. Take a good look at the rules... Not my idea of fun on a long ride.

HOWEVER, It would be fun to go on a long trip and see America in the process. Wish I had the time.

Well, I agree. But I'm a sucker for a challenge like that. I figure I could take my time on the way to San Diego, see some stuff (maybe the Grand Canyon, Vegas, etc). Then I could really take my time coming back from Florida. I have friends in Atlanta and I could go up to ride the Dragon, etc. Should be a good time. Maybe a week or ten days.

South yes. Across country? maybe. I don't really have the Vacation right now. I would be up for it if I could get a job with weekends off. And early PTO. and More pay. /sigh

CJ, there are a couple of people that do this kind of thing on this site. Smoke (Tim), Jinance (Jim) and Buffalobolt (Mike) all did this type of thing last year and they have a lot of good advice. I am interested in doing a Ironbutt but on the Uly it is almost no challenge... The bike lends itself to long highway and back road trips. I have only done a 600 mile day (twice) on the bike but still had about 6 to 7 hours of daylight left when I was done.

I am really thinking about the Buell Rally in GA at the end of April. Weather and time off from work is a major factor.

Like Nick said, you do not have anything to prove but I think it would be a lot of fun to cover some serious miles over a couple of weeks.

Frank

Wow, Frank! I was also thinking about the Buell Rally in GA in April. Time off from work is really a significant factor for me.

It's not that I feel like I have anything to prove. Frankly, if that were the case, I'd have done it on the Firebolt. I'm just anxious to get out and explore the country on a bike that gives me some comfort and carrying capacity. I'm not a fan of camping so that definitely limits my options because I'm also not made out of money.

CJ,
I know a few Iron Butt guys (HD and mostly BMW types) and I find it interesting how they are willing to deal with self-imposed hardships on otherwise great long distance trips. Its the speed and timing restrictions...

Hope you make the big trip. Its supposed to be fun and adventurous...

CJ, in order to do the GA Rally I would have to cover a lot of miles in a short amount of time and I think it would be perfect for an Ironbutt or the Bunburner.

Keep in mind that I have not talked to Lynn about this yet so it might be a moot point. LOL.

Nick, what are the speed and timing restrictions? I did not see anything in the rules beyond the 1,000 miles in 24 hours.

Well, you have to document your ride pretty thoroughly. It has to be signed off by witnesses that they can contact. They like you to have a cop sign off at the beginning and end, ideally.

I agree that we'll need to cover a lot of miles in a short time to make it happen. From here, it's pretty much a straight shot out I-40 to eastern Tennessee. I've done that before a few times in a car or truck, but never on a bike. We could easily get a Saddlesore 1000 out of it, which I think just requires 1,000 miles in 24 hours.

It's 1,040 miles from Albuquerque to Memphis, TN. I did that last year in my truck. It was about 14 hours. But my truck will go 400 miles between fill-ups. My Uly will likely go less than 200. On the one hand, that's good because I'll need to stretch my legs more often. On the other hand, it's more times stopped.

BTW: This is the ride you are referring to, right?

I ask because there is another one posted for the weekend before that, here:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=37&post=1629621#POST1629621

I would rather do Ft_bstrd's. It's 433 miles from Memphis to Blairsville where the resort is located. That's about another six hours of riding if we avoid the scenic routes. Also, I checked room availability at the cycle resort, and there isn't any. That means we'd be camping unless there's another motel nearby. I'm not a fan of camping for a lot of reasons and they make it sound like it rains there a lot that time of year.

Yes, the first one....

I-40 actually adds a few hundred miles for me but I am think I would have to take a day to head South to meet up with you. Maybe on the way back, depending on the weather I would take I-70.

I do not mind camping (to keep cost low) but I do need hot coffee and a shower at least once a day.

Does this sounds like we are planning to go??? LOL...

I better talk to Lynn....
