sam,
the ktm super bike's a marvel of good thought, to be sure. i especially like the muffler placement. : D too bad erik's confined to hd mills in his race bikes. the hd mills are great on the street (immediate power, even down low), but lacking on the track (limited top end and rev range compared to modern high revving engine designs).

i may be mistaking your cbr for a later version, but i thought they were the first 600 to break 150mph in stock trim? i'm not sure an xb9 will hit 130.

engine volume vs. swept volume: a 600 running at 13k rpm has the same swept volume as a 1200 turning 6.5k rpm. ie: it can utilize the same amount of fuel and air as the slower revving 1200 over the same period of time. if it's freer breathing (able to ingest more fuel/air) it'll likely create even more power. this is a gross over simplification which fails to take into account frictional losses and a myriad other factors.... but you get the idea.

i think the 980cc xb9 delivers somewhere around 72hp to the rear wheel and weighs nearly 450lbs. what's the hp/weight for your cbr?

the xb9r is a good looking bike, for sure. and the chassis IS functionally stellar. maybe contact nahlin racing and see if a 3 13/16" top end fits an xb9 bottom end. perhaps a high revving (relatively) 1200 would result?

tell yer design buddy to have a good long look at an s1. it's the motorcycling equivalent of an ac cobra, imho.

Lornce,

My bike stats:
Size = 598cc
Top Speed = 141 mph
HP = 93
Weight is 461....

More info here...

http://www.bikez.com/bike/index.php?bike=12212

OK so based on that ratio, I'm kind of baffled.
I'm sure the XB9 is fast enough -- seriously what sport bike isn't, but how can it be so inefficient? More weight and less power?

On the other hand when you say it gives immediate power even in low revs....that sounds really wild! Every time I have read about the rpms which the Buells run at and are limited too, I've had to do a double take, just be sure I read things correctly!

Its just too bad, the power isn't there....however, I have been told by numerous Buellers to keep $600 aside right from the start for the race kit -- something about an ECM? They say that makes it a good speedy ride!

I will definitely pass on the word on about the S1....

sam,

engine design characteristics are a complex issue and i don't claim to be an authority.... just a curious observer/participant/enthusiast.... if it makes you grin when you grab the loud handle, it's right for you....

sounds like you want an xb9r. there're hd/buell dealers coast to coast who're dying to meet you....

coincidentaly, my mailbox just disgourged a nallin racing catalogue.... they CAN fit a 3-13/16" top end to the short stroke xb9 to create a high revving 1200....

Lornce, UPS just delivered me ice tires. I'm working this aft' what are you doing tomorrow?

They weigh a tonne and I have this feeling they could be a real bitch to put on.

Do you have any leftover screws? As you ca tell by the pic, I'll need some more screws if we make a course with rihgt-hand turns.

Hey Caboose, check this guy out. : )

http://www.guzziclubsweden.nu/isaket/isaket.htm

I think we should get him to join us next time. : D

Thanks for yesterday, it was a lot of fun. I'm gonna rework my front tire along the lines of your own, complete with a tire liner.

I think we orta be able to get out onto Hamilton Harbour without any issues. It's frozen over right across the bay. We could put in at the bridge on Hidden Valley Road near where the fisherman park. For mid-week blammin it's lot's closer than St. Williams .... even with Steve's "short cuts". : D

Lemme know when ya wanna go!

Saturday was a good day. Too bad we both had tire issues. St.Williams is a long haul, and the ice conditions could have been much better. My son Nicholas had a great time and he can't wait to get out again! Hamilton harbour will be great, I'm not familiar with "Hidden Valley Road"....more details please.

Not to rub it in or anything Lornce, but from the pictures, it seems like Nick has a little more lean-angle than you???

Yea, the kid's impressive, but I think I'm getting wise to his technique. Tell him I'll give him no quarter next time out. : D

hi jay,

valley inn road turns off york blvd after the burlington side of the high level bridge. lots of parking near the wood decked bridge. lots of smooth hard ice on the bay near the woodlands cemetery. looked spotty beyond the high level bridge where the desjardins canal flows into the bay, as viewed from the bridge. didn't actually walk on the ice that far. lots of good ice near the bridge, though.

when do you wanna go?

oh what a weekend!!!!!!!!
500kms....ended on a bad note. I left my rear wheel bearings somewhere on hwy 85 and my speedo fritzed out, I guess the electrical wasn't meant for that cold?

I did have the experience of racing a snowmobile out near maryhill... If only I had a camera for that one

cheers!!!

Hi Snotires;
If you haven't fixed your speedo yet- let me know. I have meters/scopes/gear and I have repaired a couple of sensors (the internal guts). I also live in Cambridge....
