Do they carry emergency ice skates this time of year instead of lifejackets?

No, but they have dog sleds instead of life boats.

No,

Apparently there were two really large Ice Breakers sent to the rescue.

All the ice is moved on by the time May hits.

When is everyone coming back to the mainland? I was going to order ferry tickets this week.

BluzM2-Do you want to go in together? I am pretty sure I'm going to trailer to NY so I can spend a little more time riding around New England with Drew.

Mike,
Talked with my sister on Saturday, she's game to have a trailer and car parked somewhere. She's in East Aurora, NY, right outside of Buffalo.

I guess we're going to be heading back to the States on Friday, August 6th, based on the info that was posted earlier. Based on Mapquest, it's about 1200 miles from where we'll be getting off at the ferry in Novia Scotia to my house in PA. I'm planning on riding through New England on the way back, and crashing at my sister's place on the way back. If you want to work on planning a New England adventure, we can do that on the way back.

It was nice hanging out for a while on Sat.

Dullorb-
Go ahead and add my son to the list. He's one of the reasons I'm trailering since he doesn't have any distance riding experience and I'd rather spend the time touring New England.
We are still 99.5%

Excellent Guys,

I would recommend that you all talk to each other or over the weekend e-mail me information when you want to catch the boat on the North Sydney side.

Remember to Take the North Sydney to Port Aux Basques trip. Once again I'd recommend catching the 12:00 Boat (11:59pm or whenever it is) as you can sleep on the boat which chews up a night you don't have to get a hotel/motel room and you can sleep on the boat to be rested for the ride the next day. If you do that I'd plan on about a 500mile day or so for when you get off the boat.

Give me a date when your all catching the boat.

Well Newfie, I think most people here were talking about arriving at The Rock on Sunday 8/1/04, but I don't know how to convert that date to metric. I think in Newfie time it's Wednesday 1:30/8:30/04:30

SO fellas how about the 1st of Aug, do we have a show of hands?

Also I am putting this list on the www.brewcitybuell.com/newfie_trip.html it should be up by this afternoon. I may design a cgi-bin road trip organizer for badwebbers to use for their rides, lord knows that would be a better expenditure of my time than the usual 3 hours of spider solitare.

As a suggestion, can we start putting together a real itinerary with dates etc. as to when and where we are all going to meet? The guys coming from MA aren’t going to have a big problem with meeting up with us all; they’re traveling a pretty short distance, comparatively. The guys converging on Detroit from IL and IA will have a bit harder of a time. I’m planning a trip from California (no longer PA) as a fundraiser for cancer, and really have to get the timing down so I don’t miss the train, since I’ll be on the road for the better part of a week by the time we hit Newfoundland.

We had talked about meeting at Spidey’s place in Detroit. If that’s what we want to stick to, great. Iamike and his son are probably going to trailer bikes to Buffalo, dump the truck and trailer at my sister’s place and head out from there. If we’re all going to meet up, we need to decide on a route and plan that as well. The 401 through Ontario isn’t bad, but its pretty much superslab. Do we want to go through Canada on the way there, and the States on the way back (my preference), or a mix of both? From what I’ve looked at map wise, it’s about 1800 miles from Detroit to the ferry. I’m not really into doing an 800-mile day after the beginning part of my ride, much less and iron-ass 1000 the next day. I’d rather make it a 3-day trip, meaning we’d have to leave D-town on Thursday morning.

I’m not the one planning the whole trip; I’m along for the company. We do need to nail something down though, so people can get vacations planned, and get everything else nailed down.

Rant over.
Alex

Personally, as of now I am not even sure whether I will be working a job that may not give me the time off. So, I plan to rendezvous with the rest at the ferry if everyone can decide on a day, I can (possibly) be there but no one needs to worry about how I get there.

I may decide to change that later depending...

Alex,
What I am thinking about is leaving Wed. 7/28 and driving straight thru to Buffalo. My map says it is 850mi. We would spend the night there & then take off for North Sydney which is 750mi. That gives us a day or two to spare for sight-seeing, problems, etc.
I'm guessing four days on Newfoundland will be about all we can handle before we need to head back. So if we take the evening ferry back on Wed. the 4th it will give us a couple of days to take the sceninc ride back to your sister's.
Since that is the last time I'll probably ever be up that way again I'd like to take in as much without spending a ton of time in the saddle trying to make distance.

It is all of 1300 miles to North Sydney. I haven't driven Buffalo to Sydney in a few years (man you guys are bringing back memories). It is a long 2 day drive to get there.

The last time I went we took my friends '66 SS 396 Chevelle. It was about a year old at the time. The year prior we took his '57 Chevy. Those were some great times.

I wish I had the time to do this with you all. Lots of pics and stories please.

Mr.G-
Since we hadn't ever spent any time (except for my little trip last sumer) in New England, I wanted to check it out a little more. I figured we could drop off the car & trailer at Alex's sister's in Buffalo and head out across NY then cut up thru VT & NH. It may be a little slower but much better than interstate.
I'll have to go back to my map, I could have sworn it said 750mi. (I don't think it was Canadian miles, KM/Mi. converts the other way).
I think we'll carry a little camping gear just in case but otherwise we'll just wing it. This is the best way to travel by bike is just go and ride and see where we end up. Hopefully it will be at St.Johns at the appointed time.

I'm gonna have to wait til I retire & get an RV or something so I can tour the US & Canada with my little darling. If I do it all on a bike she'll just moan that she's not seen it & I'll have to do it all TWICE

On another thought as to accomodation, Would it be possible to rent a biggish house with a large garage for the week and we can all chip in for the rent. It might be cheaper than motels etc, any thoughts Newfie? do they have holiday homes to rent out there?

Mr. Grumpy used the thinking part of his brain!
That's a nifty idea, I would never have thought of it being a solo traveller so much of the time.
