OK Galen, calm down, let's see if we can work this out.

What happened?

Was there any rider / owner abuse involved?

How many wheelies were involved?

When was the last time the oil level and tire pressures were checked?

Has Betty been loving cleaned and inspected lately?

Answer these simple questions and the BADWEB Nation will be able to diagnose the current situation.

It's gonna be OK,
Chris

1. New electrical problem- all rear lights gone. blinkers, breaks, tail lights out. speedo, odo, dash lights-- dead.

2. NO abuse.

3. No wheelies involved with failures.

4. Oil & filter recently changed. New tires (with new air) also recently installed.

5. Cleaned, not so much. Inspected daily. Cause it tries to rattle it's self apart...

6. My diagnosis ( dia=through... gnosis=knowlege) aquired through the knowlege I've gathered through the last 9 years and 57,000 miles, is the b itch just can't take the whip. Of them 9 years, she's been imobilized for 4. From the turkeys at Desperation, all the way to Stu at Deele's, the determination is I ride it too fast. I am not slowin' down because of the bloody machine! I just can't bring myself to consider such a fate. I have developed a terrible addiction for corners. (I like my corners like I like my women, fast and tight)

So...

Hey Galen,

Good news, all Betty is suffering from is a simple symptom of electrical dysfunction, let's begin the diagnosis process.

Check the fuse block, if you find any blown fuses replace them, note the condition of the fuse blades and their sockets. If any corrosion is present disconnect the battery and clean the sockets as much as possible without damaging them. Apply a small amount of electrical contact lube to the blades of the fuses. Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and start the bike. If lights light and stay lit you're good to go.

If the lights do not light or work momentarily and then shut down you have a short to ground situation probably in the back of the bike. Your tail section has been on and off quite a few times, you may have a bare wire pinched or contacting some part of the frame. Take off the tail section and inspect the wire harness from the tail lights / turn signals to the fuse block inch by inch. Look for signs of pinched wires, chafing or any other wire damage. Repair as required. Turn the ignition on and start the bike. If lights light and stay lit you're good to go.

If the lights do not light or work momentarily and then shut down we'll have to move to the next step. Keep me updated and we'll get Betty's jugs roaring again soon.

Chris

Galen, Galen, Galen,

You are in a tough place at this time. Before you take on a new mistress, think about the good times you and Betty have had together.

It's easy to let a few magnified issues cloud your judgment, but with a small amount of love and attention she's always been faithful to you.

You may find some temporary excitement with something new, young and fresh, but this relationship will fade with time. Betty will still be there for you. With care and attention her large perfectly matched jugs will give you all the ride you can handle.

If it were me and I was in your position, and I absolutely had to try something new;

I'd buy a new R1 because she sounds so cool when she's screaming.

Just my opinion
Chris

Just got back yesterday from MotoGP at Laguna Seca. Not the same without Bob and Co. Rode down with Brian and Melissa and a guy they met from advrider. Melissa's DR650 tanked in Gilroy, CA luckily 1/4 mile from a shop. She ended up with a new KLR. Looking forward to Splash, just deciding which bike to use!

Hey Eric,

Thanks for sharing the photos, look's like you saw all the good stuff. Are Brian and Melissa planning to attend SPLASH this year? It would be great to see them.

Can you say 'LEARNING CURVE'? Man this is not your Daddys Buell! I've done a little suspention fiddleing, tightened up the settings and I like what it's done. This thing is FAST, and it gets there quick. Eric came up with a Human-Cycle Interface, (HCI) that has made the bike almost TOO intuitive. You just think about turning and your around the corner; If you actualy give a steering input, it is too much and I have to correct!
I am gona perform the Ron Hilyard Conversion and get rid of some of the clutter, plus I have a cool idea in mind for those god-awful blinker/mirrors!

So... I am ready for SPLASH. And that is that.

Ron, you got that right. I need a lot of hours of seat time befor I'll ever be able to ride this bike like I rode Bettie. That said, IT'S A GREAT BIKE! Fast as a drunk Satan, and at least as dangerous, I love this bike, and am looking forward to our little Mt. get-away.

Ron, also, once again let me remind you that your friends can't get lost this time of year on Mt. Rainier, and with out your presence who's gona keep track of Bob...

I'm still alive, and getting smoother. The transition from off to on throttle is a bit jerky... a little startleing when deep in a curve. Gotta get it slowed down sooner befor the turns, 'cause it likes the gas. It's not as forgiving as Bettie...

Galen: I know the off to on throttle issue you're referring to... I have compensated for it using the clutch to smooth re-application of the throttle.
