Dennied! Declined! Evicted!

Got tires in the AM yesterday at a discount tire. Didn't have the ones I wanted in stock, but I ended up with a set of Yokahamas that aren't too bad. Picked the rest of the family up from the hotel and headed off for a short day in the car, just a few hundred miles to Flagstaff. Got to Flagstaf in the early afternoon, time zones helped. Checken into a hotel and settled in for the day. Then the maid saw the dogs. Out with ya!

Shit.

Well we'd had 30 minutes rest and I went into total Clark mode! Punched that stupid moose and everything, broke into a sweat and said comeon' kids we'll go to the Canyon today instead of tomorrow, THEN find a hotel.

Spent a pleasent few hours at the canyon ( perfect time for the kids, just started to get bored at sunset, the adults wanted two whole days there. Again, it's a must see if you have not). Dinner at the canyon then we said the hell with it, Vegas bound. Kids complained a bit but slept the whole drive, made it in about four hours. Checked in at 1 AM and have a lay over day in Sin City. Should be able to find fun stuff for the family and see the lights tonight, then off to LA tomorrow Early AM!

Stupid mexican shaved rats anyway. I guess it's kinda wrong to lock them up in the car with that kind of heat.

Loving the posts...

Kids dug on Vegas! As predicted the lights and dazzle blew thief minds. Got a dog friendly hotel for two nights and spent all day yesterday in sin city. Slept in a bit, then breakfast in the hotel. After a nice meal we headed off to Circus Circus for some family friendly fun. Turns out Circus Circus has an indoor air conditioned amusment park. Got all day passes and hit the rides! Got all the big ones in then Nate had a bit of an Isssue with a ride called the Disco. The rest of us thought it was cool, but it still ended the rides for a while. We headed back to the hotel for some time at the pool. Talk about HOT. 110 at the pool had to wear shoes to and from the water and direct sun was intolerable. After an hour or so at the pool we headed to the room, cleaned up and headed to the Wynn for a steak dinner. Had good steaks at the SW steakhouse, number ten on the top ten list, so Sabrina and I can check that one off of out top ten steakhouses quest. (been there done that no need to go back. Great service but the steaks at the ringside are way better!). Makes six of the top ten we've made it to (sort of, ask me later). Kids and I walked a mile down the strip taking in sights while Sabrina took the car back to the hotel. Caught the Volcano eruption which was a big hit. Picked the car up at the hotel and headed back to Circus Circus to end the night. By the time we left the kids were SPENT. Up before dawn and in the car for LA. Drop the twins off in a few more minutes at grandpas house (their mom's dad) then Sabrina and I are using up my Hilton points on a free night at Huntington beach. I need a NAP!

Vegas 'ok do that to ya!

LA was nice. Kids and grown ups went seperiate ways, they hung out with grandpa Bugsey, we used up my Hilton points on a free night at the waterfront resort in Huntington Beach. Did a couple loads of laundry, hung out poolside (I got burned, no supprise) had coctails then dinner in the rich part of town, Balboa beach, where one can park their yacht by the back door of their house. Sabrina and I were up early for a stroll on the beach then picked up the kids about 9:30 for the turn North! Last leg, and Ill be honest, Im pretty road weary. Made it to Monterey along the coast road past all the low income housing on the beach, and stopped for the night. Enjoyed a dip in the pool, a dinner of Tapas and got on the road (again) about 9:30 heading north on 1 / 101. Goal today is across the Golden Gate and throught the Redwoods. Honestly we may push on home tonight if we have it in us. We've entered the bug eyed post crack up Clark stage where were just geting it done now...

OK, vacation over. That's not to say we're home, in fact we have a few hours to go, but we are all DONE with this road trip! Sabrina has been "angry" at / with me for 36 hours straight and "cranky" describes the general mood in the car.
Yesterday started out well enough, got out of Monterey a little late, hotel missed our wakeup call, but no big deal, right? Turns out that extra hour of sleep cost us. We rolled up 101 but it's more farm country than coast through that middel section of CA, so the scenery wasn't great. Ran into a tracfic jam (another motorcyclist on the ground, but the brain bucket was on and he/she was clearly still alive) made it to the Golden Gate bridge about lunch time to find it fogged in, no supprise but we had been hopeful. Shaped a few pictures and hit Sausalito for what turned out to be a nice lunch about 2:30. We should have had fast food and pressed on. Apparently e dry single resident of San Francisco wanted to drive north on 101 at the same time, and we sat in bumper to bumper traffic for over 50 miles. Over three hours of nerve racking, patience grinding hellish traffic! That put us so far behind he really had to hammer down to get to the valley of the giants before dark, and by the time we got there the kids were so done it wasn't impressive.
The family began debating pushing for home that night, kids wanted a hotel and a pool, grown ups wanted to be home, I was on the fence. We pushed to Eureka, nothing looked suitable. We pushed to Arcata, looked even worse. We pushed for Crecent city and began calling ahead. Hampton was out of rooms, Best Western was out of rooms, we gave up and switched drivers on the side of the road thinking Grants Pass or bust. But. Alas Sabrina decided to call the Comfort Inn just to see. We were in luck, one room left! Turns out that luck we were in was bad luck, place was nasty. We tried not to touch anything as we slid into bed. I have a good tolerance for dives and even I was put out, not sure what pushed me over the edge, the chewed off fingernail on the carpet or the mold on the curtians but we just didn't feel at home! Sabrina was beside hersels, and we hit the road fast, and that's pretty much it. Not a good way to cap it all off, but it did provide motivation to get back one the car and push the last few hundred miles to our own house and our own bed!

"... And that's the way it is."

Epic. What's a good road trip without a few sketchy hotels. It's unlikely that you picked up anything communicable, but just to be sure, we're going to have to ask you to stay away from the members of the PBR for a little while... It's nothing personal, I'm sure you understand!
