I need to exorcise the EFI gremlins from my 2006 Uly. I’m ready to use the ecm spy software, but I need the device that connects my bike to my laptop.

Anybody know where I can purchase one? I’d rather just buy one here in the US rather than spend a bunch of time tracking down hard-to-get parts to fab one myself or ordering one from some guy in England.

Thanks,

Bill

No place else to buy the cable...only one company makes it.

The connector is pretty easy to source...google the name and part number and you'll find a ton of places to buy from...you can even order through your local stealership.

All you need to know (websites and part numbers and assy instructions) is in the beginning of the tunning guide in the Help menu of the ECMSPY software.

If you need help actually building it due to being all thumbs when it comes to electronics...send me the materials...I'll have it built in about 15 minutes.

Happy tunning!

Actually, Batts Racing has been selling so many of the Deutsche connectors that they started making & selling complete cables for $55. But it's a really easy build: 3 crimped connections and your'e done. Not worth the $30 extra.

One more thing, Bill: Are your Gremilns the ones that were solved in the 07 with a different fuel map and inner airbox? Or are you tuning in some mods?

Hmmm.... anyone know anything about these palm pilots?

I will need to double check, but, I believe mine will shut off after 3 minutes with no operator inputs, and no external power. It does use a different power cable.

BUT, I am also wondering, if, as long as there is a data stream going into it, if it will turn off?

Its a Tungsten E2 or 3 or something like that... I have a laptop as well..but, kinda hard to datalog with a laptop I would imagine... all that motion would be bad for the HD right?

bring up the search function and enter enter "(squiggle).3"

Where (squiggle) looks like a support our troops ribbon. After you hit OK on the search, you should get a prompt telling you that you won't timeout.

The screen cap is from some spanish website.

USB adapter.. I saw a male to male adapter somewhere...or, I might get ahold of an extra cable, and try to make it...

I have a 1g card in there, shoudl be PLENTY to data-log...

ANYWAY, I cannot get that "No-Auto-Off" to work(thats what comes up when you enter the squiggle 3 into the search(as shown in the screen shot). Wonder where it is in the programming.

EDIT, and it IS a Tungsten E2

Hmph. I've got a T2; it worked fine. There's some shareware out there somewhere that should work for you.

The Palm cable's setup eludes me. I sent mine to some dude in VA who said he could build it for me. Apparently you have to open up the Palm end of the cable and flip some wires around... I don't know why. Right now he's just waiting on me to test Tx output V. Should be 5V to match the ECM; if it's 12V we have problems.

1Gb is enough for the log and several albums' worth of MP3's... Eric did a one hour session and came back with a 4 Mb log. Raw data is cool like that.

Good luck, and post up what you find out.

Well, the male to male would have to be a null I am pretty sure..... probably wouldnt work otherwise....

BUT, i am not sure what the inside of a USB looks like, etc... not my specialty.

Which firmware do you have? there might be a difference?

Only options in my prefs are 30 secs, 1 min, 2 min, and 3 mins...

Well, I think I may stand corrected...

Did the squiggle thing...
promted [No auto off] in the search bar...

I hit ok... and it said there was no results...

NOW, I have been letting the thing sit for 6 minutes, still running...

SO...

NOW, to just get the cord...

Thanks for the advice, Scotty.

I ordered the necessary connector parts on Thursday. I ordered the connectors from Ladd Industries and they arrived today. I ordered the TTL-232R USB/Cable from FTI Quebec and it was shipped today.

Don’t know what problems were solved in ’07, but my problem is a pronounced surge at low throttle settings. It’s most noticeable in low gear, running between 10 and 20 mph on level ground with a warm (fan running) engine. Bucks like a bronco.

It can be replicated anytime by warming up the engine and defying anyone to hold the engine speed steady at 1500. Can’t be done – surges uncontrollably between 1200 and 1800 rpm.

I bought this Uly it new last November, and the dealer has had three tries at fixing the surge issue. They finally told me, in writing no less, that they had conferred with the tech gurus at HD/Buell and that the surge was caused by the EFI and that it was “normal” for this bike .

I was about ready to lemon law that sucker (a “dual-sport” purpose bike that’s unstable at 15 mph??!!), until I read the threads in BWB from others with the same problem. After confirming there were no intake leaks, I decided to try re-mapping the ecm with the help of ecm spy. Worst that could happen is that it wouldn’t work and then I could lemon law it then.

Note that I wouldn’t even bother if I didn’t love everything else about this bike!

A surging throttle=normal? My ass. you ought to write a "WTF" letter to Erik himself and include that little snippet the stealership gave you.

Start with a good TPS reset. as simple as that may sound, most dealerships can't reset the TPS on a Buell to save thier lives. Firebolteric took his back forth to the dealer many times, then finally bought the VDSTS (before the days of ECMSpy) and set it himself, problem solved. And take a close look at your fuel map. I'm guessing your Uly is bone stock. I've got the same model year and I do remembering it being a little grouchy on take-off, but I don't remember any hesitation. But she didn't stay stock for long...

What you can do is dump the '07 map into it. They changed the airbox design and fuel mapping that year and tons of uly owners were modding thier 06's with that setup. Basically, you just copy/paste the fuel & spark map (front & rear) from the 07 EEPROM to the 06 EEPROM (different ECM models; you can't just load EEPROM's between different models), then reflash it and cut a couple of 1" holes in your inner airbox.

Let us know how it goes...

I have the '05 lightning scg and had the same surging problem until I had Firebolteric reset the TPS...not smooth as glass all the time but definately back to being controllable.

SO....

Who is knowledgeable in the workings of the USB cables and plugs?

I have some questions I need answered, before I cause myself an expensive mistake.

Its also sorta hard to type out.... BUT...

The cable that comes outta my Tungsten E2, ends in a male USB. (I can keep the PDA on, so no need to build that circuit card thing right?)

NOW, if I get a cable from Batts Racing, as mentioned above, its all set to plug into a computer. Which would be fine for the laptop... BUT, I also wanna datalog with my PDA etc.

NOW, is the USB able to have a gender convertor put on it, to connect the 2 male ends of the ECMSpy cable, and my PDA USB...

I mean, is it really that simple? or, more complicated due to how the data and power is transfered? Or?

WOULD that cause a problem? Did that MAke any sense?

HAHAHA

This is me sticking my fingers in my ears. I 've given up on the possibilities of PDA datalogging. 1) The logs come out with a lot of noise, 2) My eBay Tungsten had a fried Tx port, 3) Building a cable for one is a mystery that I will never solve.

I know I haven't answered your question, but thought I'd let you know I'll bow out of this chore. Look on BuelletinBoard.

If you have too much noise, then shorten the TTL side of the cable or switch to a RS232 type PDA (not TX, E2 and similar). I get one discarded record within about 5-10 thousand valid records (Tungsten T/T2).

Gunter

Unfortunately not. The USB cable is for PC/laptop only.

Plenty of us have experience using it... even have some base fuel maps kicking around for most of the aftermarket cans. Just ask.
