Hi all,
Thought I was going to enjoy some nice weather riding today on the 12R, but all I got when I pressed the starter was a rapid clicking noise. I had the issue a month ago so I thought it was the battery so I did the following:

1. Checked the tender (read "charged")
2. Removed battery, cleaned connections
3. Took the battery to Battries Plus who load tested it, charged it over the weekend and said the battery was fine.
4. Rode for a couple weeks and put away for two (rain)

Now, same click, click, click, click. Weird issue. I noticed that the digital clock reset itself when I turn the key and engine switch off. Any suggestions? Fuse? Relay? Solenoid? I greatly appreciate any help.

I'm betting it's the battery despite what Bat+ said. I've had that happen to me.

Shady - First thing to check is that the battery cables are tight on the battery. The only time the Uly has not started was just after I put the Uly back together and did not properly tighten the negative connector. I was at work and luckily I figured it out pretty quick. If they are tight, I would say battery. If the battery goes flat again I would look at the voltage regulator and so on.

Jim N.
Thanks for the Conti Road AttacK info. Got them spooned on last week and wore the nubblies off this weekend during the Cape Fear 1000. They still look new with 2K and no chicken strip on em.

Now to fix the fuel pump that doesn't shut off.

You know what it is right? Fuel pump wiring is chaffed.

Yep, got the info from your new riders info listing. She got me home.

Thought I had a VR going bad; with aux lights on the volt meter was jumping all over the place. Head lights would go dim at the same time. Figure with the fuel pump running, heated gear, radar detector, and gps running. It was putting me over the capacity.

You may have something else wrong actually.

The fuel pump runs continuously when the engine is running. It only shuts off during the time between priming the system and when you actually start the bike. So when the bike is on, it is normally going.

There are (at least) two wires that can chafe. One wire will make the pump run all the time, and the other will blow the fuel pump fuse. You've obviously chafed the one that makes it run all the time. You may have a small nick in the other one as well, and it's playing havoc with your electrics. I suspect however, from the symptoms you post, that your 77 connector is melting. There is a replacement kit available for that that updates it to a better connector.

Let me know how I'm doing for remote diagnosis. : )

Aaarg... frustrating weekend working on the bike. Long story short, when I had the 12K service done, I found multiple "quality of work" issues. Among those they had dented my brand new ceramic coated muffler when they mounted it. I gave them my old muffler and they swapped it with one from their demo bike and sent it off to get ceramic coated.

Due to all the quality of work issues, I decided I was not going back there and would mount the new muffler myself. Tried to do it this weekend and found out they had stripped the 2 right side bolts when they mounted the muffler.

Now my mistake. I probably should have stopped right there and ordered new hardware. But since I had the old muffler off, I decided to try and mount the new muffler anyway. Bottom line is I couldn't get the right side bolts to seat all the way and I'm guessing buggered up the flange bolts on the new muffler trying to reuse the stripped bolts.

The pipe is on and seems secure, but will need to come off and get remounted with new hardware.

I ordered all the parts, new bolts, new flange nuts, flange gaskets and torco clamps.

My dilemma is the flange nuts are held onto the muffler with tabs that are welded in place. Do I cut the tabs and have the new ones welded on, or try and re-tap the ones there?

Suggestions? Anyone know a welder fabricator? Also going to need some help next time I tackle this because mounting the muffler really isn't a 1 man job.

Sorry you had issues Spectrum.

I would retap, just because it sounds a lot easier.

As to a welder, you're located near Kevin Drum, who makes the drummer mufflers. I don't know if he does stuff like that too, but I do know he is an excellent welder, and has helped people here work on their bikes.

Jim,
Trying to track down the parts for the 77 connector mod/repair. Did you ever find anything out on this connector kit?

Y1312.02A8 VOLTAGE REGULATOR CONNECTOR SERVICE KIT

I got this off your post on the badweb Ray Price link for parts.

If it didn't pan out I might just eliminate the connector all together with some aircraft quality environmental splices. Can't be stranded in the middle of the night in BFE someplace.

Thanks in advance.
Tim

Tim, I think that is the kit you want to retrofit onto an existing VR. There is also and updated VR that includes the new kit. There is 1 digit difference in the part number, and being dyslexic, it took me a long time to figure out they were not the same thing.

I've put neither on my bike. I have an some parts to pick up at Ray Price. I'm not sure exactly which one I ordered. We shall see. If I got the entire VR, I think I'm going to order the kit, and keep the VR as a spare. It's one of those things that is nice to have around.

Jim- Just checking in to see what the C3'ers are up to.

Regarding the updated plugs for the voltage regulator- according to at least one post at Badweb, the updated VR comes with both male and female replacement plugs. This lets you update the bike wiring harness, update your old VR if it's not fried, and you're ready to go with your new VR if you need it. So, if you got the new VR, you may already have what you need.

Hugh, I didn't get the VR, I had ordered some grommets.

I'm going to order the plug kit. My VR still works, I just want the updated plug so I don't have to worry about melting.

Jim,
The VR appears to be working ok and I have a spare (old type plug) VR sitting on the ready reserve - just in case - shelf so can't justify the new VR with plug now. OBTW I also have the old type bearings front and rear, an old type belt...sometimes it doesn't pay to lean forward.

Figure if it is going to fail on me it will be the dark of night in the middle of no where when I'm on a tight schedule.

I'm going to put a plug kit on order at RPHD as well. If the old one looks to be arking/melted or just nasty when I pull it apart might just splice it in for a temporary fix.

Hey everyone! I had an awesome birthday! I got a new pocketbook, a scrapbook page from my friend sam, jello (long story!) from my friend Leah, and Jordans taking me shopping sometime! Leah is also taking me to get my nails done on saturday! Can't wait!

Ok about the whole jello thing, Leah calls me jello! That nickname came along one day when i was sick and she told me she was going to bring me jello. Ever since i have been jello! She has weird nicknames for everyone: Jello(Me!), Pickle(Sam), Pencil(Jordan), Socks(Morgan), and Alfonzo(Kelsey).

K Thanks everyone!
