I will grab some pix, Ferris, as long as you bring back some of WA if it is clear enough to see anything that is.

The best they can tell me is there's a 99% chance of no snow.

I'll believe that when I (don't) see it. : D

Hey everybody, you are all invited to TPT this weekend (28th) for a bike show, poker run and free BBQ. If you will be in town swing by and represent the Buells. There is a Buell category for the show and it would be nice to mix it up a little.

John, thanks so much for the reply, the swap of the bags, and the trust. I really appreciated it. I also finally remembered, we met and rode together a couple of days after X-Mas with U4, Kristi and Carlos, and Webe. Take care.

This is a pic from the edge of the sinkhole that is swallowing Squirrel Spur Road. It was rough taking those boring curves right on the edge of the abyss. You know a curve is not a good curve when you are carrying a passenger and you hear them giggle as you touch down footpegs.
The sinkhole at edge of Squirrel Spur.

We rode together down Squirrel Spur, Willis Gap, and Orchard Gap on the Uly. We rode Squirrel Spur together on the Bolt. She rode behind me and the bolt on the Uly down Orchard Gap. Yes, she can flat foot the Uly.

My giggling passenger.

We will be riding in the area again soon. Maybe over Easter. I know where my vacation days will be going to this year, bring on the mountain grass. All the roads that are being ate by the sinkhole are just as FB&D said.

Peg scraping, round here? I don't believe it! Must've been a cadillac with a pair of curb ticklers headed the other direction.

I had to suffer through 300 or so miles of that Parkway running along the Blue Ridge this weekend, just awful. NUTS

Tough but thrilling weekend of racing a VIR. I raced two long races on Saturday. The middleweights and heavyweights. The 600 middleweights are the fastest groups racing there. Best I could do is a mid-pack finish. Place 13th out of 32 in the middleweight 16 lap race on Saturday. The heavyweights 10 lap race on Saturday was my favorite race even though I was racing against bigger bikes. It was just plain fun, I felt good, and had some great battles with other riders. I finished 11 out of 24/25 in that one.

Sunday I raced 4 more sprint (6 lap) races. I didn't do much except survive. In the second race I had two knuckleheads have spectacular wrecks right in front of me. Both times it was the bike directly in front of me. The first was coming out of T7, a steep uphill to the right. I'm right on his wheel when he hamfists the throttle, spins the rear which steps out then regains traction and bucks him off ... but he doesn't let go of the bars. He's on the floor pulling the bike down on its side when the tires bite again and the bike stands up with him being dragged along side still holding the bars but now pinning the throttle since he's being dragged. The bike breaks free and accelerates away riderless. While it's shooting across the track headed towards a grandstand I'm headed through the grass on the other side of the track trying to avoid the carnage, which I do but lose positions while off the gas, in the grass. Back on the track I put my head down and try to get some positions back. Two laps later another knucklehead passes me at an impossible speed right before the entrance to the rollercoaster sequence. Dummy then realizes he's just too fast in, grabs the brakes, tucks the front, and goes over the bars right in front of my wheel as I'm about to tip it in for the turn. The track was blocked by him and his bike sliding around so I had to just look up and ride off the top of the rollercoaster at race pace. It's about a three story drop to the bottom so I just kept looking up and ahead, stayed off the brakes and was able to ride it out till the cornerworker waved me back on to the track at the bottom. Head back down, regroup and try again. Finished, but lost to much time. Thanks knuckelheads.

Last two races were back to back. The first was fun but I just wasn't fast enough to hang with the young bucks on better equipment. I was in the next race so I never had time to pit just lined back up and got ready for the green flag. All weekend long I had been starting in the first wave. This was my only 2nd wave start of the weekend. I had "2nd" wave in black print on blue tape on my tank in front of me. I was just too keyed up and totally fixated on the started. Revs at 9000 rpm, leaned way forward, left foot on the peg, right foot down .... #1 board goes sideways, starter's arm moves with the flag ..... Crap I just jumped the start cause that was the start for the first wave. Damn!; first time I've done that. So, I knew the meatball flag was coming and when I got it, I came in the next lap, screaming down the hot pit at 100+, full stomp stop at flagman, then scream away to rejoin the race which went pretty well after that.

I don't think I've ever seen so much carnage. All weekend long, guys crashing in practice, in races, on warm up and cool down laps. Sliding bikes, airborne bikes, flipping bikes... Some of my races were littered with bikes crashed in various turns. There was one very bad incident in the Ess's that required a life flight and two of those guys will require a long recovery. I hope they have a full and speedy recovery. I was very happy to keep it upright, avoid a trip to the ER and return home intact.

It was my first time performance riding since 12 broken bones in November and I held up physically better than I thought I would, but but I'm still sore and tired today and still dealing with an adrenaline hangover. Am I too old for this?

Had a great time with Jim and Pete and thanks guys for all your help. It was great seeing Twig and Patty there too.... thanks for the support!

Greetings all from cold, soggy western Washington. Great pix MTB, glad you guys had fun and were able to get in a few laps ahead of the approaching sinkhole. Me 'n D should be able to join y'all the next time you (and any of the rest of the C3 hooligans) are up in our neck of the 'hood.

PS: Rubberdown, you're our hero, too. : ): )

Mike, we had a great time watching you race Sunday. Pat really enjoyed it! I wanted to make it Sat., but had to work. I know you are an inspiration to all of us old farts. Especially me, being one of the older ones.

Hey D, I love the vintage scene and could really see myself going that way. I don't recall seeing your friend but always enjoy seeing the bikes, meeting the vintage racers and watching them race.

Rubberdown - Your my hero too! I am glad your back and having fun. I wish I could have made it. I would have loved the ride, but not to be. I am glad motorcycle club racing has not changed much. The last race weekend I attended like that, the amateurs looked like something out of a Mad Max movie. The bikes and the riders leathers were a definite mutant sight.

Rubberdown - I really enjoyed watching you race on Sunday. That was a first for me, and I was amazed at what a beautiful sport to watch motorcycle racing is, not to mention exciting! You did good Mike. Glad Twig and I weren't viewing from that particular point on the course when you had your two near upsets. Those would indeed have been "Oh my God!!!" moments. But you kept your head up and your rubber down. Fantastic!

So who all can make it to "mountain grass" over Easter weekend? I plan on being in the area. The Lakeview Motel has rooms for $40. They are not Fancy, but they are clean.

Cell reception is 0 at the cabin, but the cabin land line is 276-398-3432. Call if you're in the area! We're not far from the Lakeview Motel or Orchard's Gap.
