In desperate need of a person that really knows what they are talking about when it comes to buells. My bike has aftermarket work done to it by Al at american sport bike down south. I run an open air box kit and D&D exhaust with my computer remapped. Does anyone have a similar setup?

Kelly,

What's the problem specifically? There's a lot of knowledge in the group and we have access to Mike @ Latus if we need to tap a deeper resource.

I'm running a custom map (ECM Spy) on an 06 with a Drummer. XbSweed was running a similar map on a SS drummer. Either He or I can download the ECM and look at it for you if fuel / timing are the issue.

Let us know...

Where do I begin?, There is what I would consider a rattle or thwapping that goes away when I reach about 3000 RPM. When I was in San Diego I expressed my concern to Al and he informed me that what I was hearing was always there but could not normally be heard with the air box in tact. During the freeze earlier this winter but battery went dead and refused to hold a charge, the front plug also fouled and in an effort to avoid giving Harley my life savings I attempted to change the plugs myself. Come to find out the front plug is a lot easier to change than the rear, so in an effort to ensure the plug was the only issue I changed it and started up the bike to see if it would idle. The bike started and idled just fine for about one minute then cut off. Thinking it was cold or something I started the bike again and was greeted with the check engine light and a bike that would not stay running. Against my will I took the bike to Harley and was told repeatedly that HD and Buell do not recommend aftermarket parts to the point that I could not even finish a sentence, clearly I'm the only guy to ever do anything to a buell : ). So Harley took $350 for changing my plugs and resetting my TPS, thank you may I have another. Now I have a bike that wont idle until hot, spits, pops, cracks, backfires, ect., but has a brand new set of HD plugs. Harleys only answer to me was returning my bike to stock. Please help, I just want my baby better. I'm sure you guys may sympathize.

P.S. To any Harley mech's, got a lot of love for you guys so no offense intended in the post, I just think it is a little messed up that legal and corporate guidelines and rules prevent you from even talking aftermarket junk.

It's dark now but I'll get pics up in the morning.

Kelly-

There is quit a bit more valve train noise below 3000 RPM with the air cover off (Topless). I ran my XB topless for 10,000 miles so I know what it sounds like.

The popping, backfire spits etc, sounds like it could be several tings and would be best to just hook up to ECM Spy. This will give the current AFV, TPS setting, error codes, as well as good look at your fuel tables.

If it was not doing it before the HD visit then the TPS was probably set incorrectly or the AIT sensor left unplugged.

I also have a MAP I made which is a Hybrid of the Race ECM and the 07 MAP which works very well with the Drummer setup. We could save your map and test this one out. If you don't like it, its just a matter of a few minutes to upload your original one again.

Like Paul mentioned either one of us can help you out.

Please let me if your bike was serviced @ Latus. I will follow up if it was & that you're not satisfied. If another dealer did the service I still would like to follow up with our management.

Thanks Dave! Great offer of help!

Kelly, Welcome to Portland! The sweed says we'll be riding with you soon.

How's the new map working? (It's the same map I run)

Oh yeah!! Tested it and loved it. I think the richer map fits the setup better. I also changed my cruising RPM from 2500-3000 RPM to 3500-4000 RPM, oh man the car alarms love me. I did get my bike serviced at Latus but the problem is way higher on the food chain than a mechanic or service rep. I understand they can't really touch aftermarket I just think it's a little silly. I look forward to riding with you guys, I'm not sure if I'll still be married if I go this Saturday but definitely every other time.

HD/buell as a corporation cant say aftermarket is a good option (and they dont train their employees to know how to sell/diagnose/work on bikes that have been moded, not that some of them cant or wont!) so most often you will find their employees saying so(ie. aftermarket is no bueno), as Dave stated at our last meeting, they(buell) have spent countless hours on research and development to come out with a great and competitive product off the showroom floor that doesnt need any modification...

...the reality, i know few people that ride a bone stock motorcycle, especially a performance bike. The nature of it is that you customize it to your own preference, but buy it as close as you can (most likely why all of us own buells)

Since a buell is a performance motorcycle the first things to access to gain performance would be air/fuel, exhaust, weight, and suspension. An easy replacement would be the stock buell exhaust. It would take care of two of the four at the same time. If the aftermarket exhaust were to perform equally(you would need to adjust your ecm or carb here), if not better, and reduce the overall weight(speaking of losing weight, If I would, my bike would gain about 10 perceived HP!) install it! The air/fuel thing i will leave to Aron and Paul since they both have hands on knowledge of FI and ecmspy, but with a carb model bike, jetting and venturi size is everything and you can do everything from having the best running bike to a bike that will self destruct by adjusting all or one of these perameters. The key here is the ability to dial it in for the givin application, whether it be street, strip, or track one thing I do know is that ecm spy makes doing this way easier than replacing jets. To see the full gain of any mod in the fuel feeding aspect you must have a free breathing intake, thus the airbox mod.

Overall-

The bad: Once you change these things you should plan on working on your bike yourself.

The good: There are plenty of people here on badweb(and a lot of other buell specific websites) that can help you through any problem you find, or at least direct you to someone that has the knowledge and experience

If you have yet to justify all of the performance mods on your bike, I hope this post helps you to.

...you and everyone else tell me if i left anything out
