Well, not everyone is freakishly tall. Just people that the Uly is designed for.
Truthfully, I have a little trouble tossing a leg over the City X with the stock seat sometimes. Either I'm short, old, or inflexible. But I can't be all three...

Broke out the heated gear today: ( Now if I can only get my ULY out of the shop. Turns out an throttle body adjuster cable was getting worn by rubbing on the engine somewhere, now I have to wait for the part to come in! Next riding day is Saturday and the weatherman says 37 degrees! K

Last weekend, I put the heated grips back on. What a difference!
On the downside, I've taken so much heat off the headers, it's now cold to ride the bike... It's actually warmer on the left side! Can't win for losing.
Been in the cold weather gear for a few weeks though. Still haven't sprung for the heated gear, doubt if I will. What I got seems to get the job done pretty well.
Once all this damn rain gets out of the area, I'll get back out on mine.

Heated gear is pretty expensive. The first year I got mine. I was riding route 100 from route 29 to 95 and there were these 2 guys in a jeep. They were staring at me. The weather that day was flurries and 32 degrees so I had flurries flying around as I was riding. Heated gear was awesome. its colder off of the bike unplugged than on it riding! K

...they have battery powered heated gear now....

I love mine. Best money, hands down, I've *ever* spent on a motorcycle. I think the jackets retail for around $160, the gloves around $120, and a dual thermostat like I have is about $90. Pricey buy-in, but I've been using the same set (jacket liner, gloves, 'stat) for four or five seasons now with no issues. Gloves have been in POURING rain, no issues.

Riding in snow is awesome, I'll take it over rain any day. Snow goes *around* you : )

Joe
Have you hard-wired your dual thermostat on the Uly ? I've got the "portable" dual stat but I'd spring for a permanent dual if I could figure out a good way to mount it. I'm no longer hesitant to run electric up under the airbox. When I had the airbox etc. off to find my broken throttle pulley shaft I got a good look at the power for the PIAAs and my hard-wired HIDs I had previously fished along side the factory harness and there were absolutely no signs of any heat damage. I don't really want to drill any holes in the airbox cover but I guess it would be better than having the heated gear cables flapping in the wind like they do now

Don, I have my thermostat hooked up to the battery same as the trickle charger. I just tucked it under the seat and in a way it comes out along side of the trickle charger plug. I have the duel thermostat too and it is nice. I turn the gloves up a little bit higher when not using the heated grips. I don't notice the cable flapping around. Two things I forget when riding with heated gear, on the dual thermostat which knob operates gloves or jacket, I forget: ) and sometimes I stand on the pegs, if you stand up you disconnect the gear from the battery: )then get cold! k

on the dual thermostat which knob operates gloves or jacket

I cheat on that. Touchup paint : ) I painted one of the knobs with my S2's white frame touchup, and with a meter figured out which outlet turns on with that knob (if you don't have a meter, but have a few minutes, you can just plug in a glove and wait to see if it gets hot), and painted the little indented part of the end the same white.

Don - I "mounted" the stat to my Buell tank bag. I poked 4 holes in it, made a flat metal piece for the inside with the same four holes, and zip-tied the belt clip to the tank bag. Wire is connected to the hot/ground at the battery and tucks under the seat. I have it threading out of the left front corner of the seat, over the airbox. I did bundle the tails off the thermostat, onto the thermostat, with another zip tie (damn things are like duct tape, lol) so they're not flapping/hanging. I have them set so the outlets are pointed to the left, horizontal, under the stat body. I'll get a pic.

I couldn't figure out how to do it otherwise, without drilling the airbox lid. If I score another cover (I'd like to get an STT lid, with the matching orange "BUELL" lettering instead of the 'stainless' finish), I'll just go ahead and put the same 4 holes in the airbox, so I don't "have" to have the tank bag. Not like anything'll rust, lol.

That one's not nearly as "mounted" as the 'stat on my S2 - that one, I cut the wires from the 'stat to the clothing and 'stat to battery, spliced in some 12/2 zip wire, mounted the 'stat to the top of the gauge cluster under the windscreen (velcro, didn't drill the cluster on an S2!), and ran the wires back under the tank - clothing pops out (again) left front corner of the seat, power right to battery. Summertime, I can tuck either bike's wires under the seat, out of the way.

No stat on the S1W. Hell, no *bodywork* on the S1W. I just loop the gloves off the jacket by using the "ACC" plug inside the jacket, and plug it directly into the connector peeking out under the left front corner of the tail section, with the tender plug. Full-hot is *just about* good enough on that naked thing, lol.

Joe, Kathy ( and anybody else)

I've been trying to research inner air box mods, breather tube rerouting, etc for the Uly on BadWeb. There's a ton of stuff out there - but I have to tell you I've gotten really frustrated with hijacked threads and all - so I thought I would ask somebody I trusted what they have done and what they believe about this issue.

I'd especially like to know you're opinion on catch cans - seems like a great idea I just can't stomach $140 for that little bugger

I have the stock breather setup on my Uly, it doesn't bother me one bit. I'd rather burn it off than drip it on the ground... Stock on my S2 as well, burns it off. My S1W, I rerouted to a small filter, mounted just under/behind the left passenger footpeg mount (since it's a solo bike, no chance of it being in the way of a foot). I did that because it was already set up with a breather when I bought it, and I didn't want to drill a hole in the back of the race air cleaner plate and have it be in the wrong place, etc.

For the airbox mod, I just drilled it out in a bunch of places with a 1" woodbore drill bit (flat blade bit). I'll try and get a pic for you, but nothing ahead of the centerline and nothing on top. Just the rear half of the sides, and the back edges. If you look at your inner airbox, you can see a grid cast into the plastic. I, in the areas I mentioned, drilled a hole centered on each square of the grid. Not the most elegant...but nobody sees it anyway : )

Black - yep, they're / we're open. I'm still not back at work yet <bored>, but I'm pretty sure they open at 6am tomorrow for the "holiday sale extravaganza" : )

Weird. Did it fall to, or away from, the sidestand? Any annoying punks running around the neighborhood today?

Don - pulled the outer box to take pics. Apparently, I'm the *king* of "do something and forget how I did it", LOL. As you can see, I put some holes in the front section as well as the side. Right side is factory, left side is homemade - used the 1" bit, drilled 2 holes in the same panel, and Dremel-ed out the section in between to make a rectangle. Bottom pic shows three drain holes I put in the lower pan, just in case any water gets in. They're at the lowest point when it's on the sidestand.

thanks Joe

Above and beyond, as usual

I saw some postings where some folks added holes to the left, taped up factory holes on the right ( theory being the right-sided holes were sucking in air that has been heated coming off the engine)

Maybe its the colder air, maybe the tech made some adjustments, but the Uly today did a LOT less decel popping than it did before iI broke the throttle body pulley shaft.

I suppose it's better that way but actually I kind of miss it.

My dremel went to tool heaven so I may have to wait for Santa to bring me a new one

Black - if I park a bike in a parking lot, I always park it far back enough that it nearly sticks out past the backs of the cars. Took me a long time to get used to my body being in the back half of the space, and it being "OK" (compared to being in a cage and being towards the front of the space), but now that I'm used to it, I feel a lot better when I have to park in a big lot. Sorry to hear about it, what a way to start the "holiday season"...hopefully it's just minor cosmetic stuff. Let me know how it pans out.

theory being the right-sided holes were sucking in air that has been heated coming off the engine

I think folks worry too much, or try to think about it too much (these days, my emphasis has to go on the word "try"...). Radiant heat will go up no matter which side, it's an *engine* under there LOL. That, and heat will come through the plastic pan - you don't need airflow to move heat, at least not thru a piece of material like that. Personally, I'd rather have moving (cooler) air than stagnant, radiant-heated warm air in there...but that's just me I guess.

If you need a Dremel for a few days LMK. I've got a couple spares - they're the tool that my garage voted "most likely to disappear when I need it"...until I get home with the new one, then they turn up immediately. I have three now : )

I'm sure the lack-o-popping was a combination of things - your butterfly is probably seated correctly again, for the first time in a while. I'm sure there was a TPS reset, which includes an AFV reset. Glad to hear she's healthy again, though : )

Went to the bar and had a shot of JD after that! i can send pictures ofthe MB to you. It was my Father's he restored it. I inherited it and its been sitting in my garage for almost 10 years now! I know the engine is original, there is a gun mount between the front seats. I used to go over trees with it in Pa. K

K - I love my Wrangler. Not a "mudder" or anything, but a great workhorse that I could care less about cosmetically. No, wait, that's my Uly...whatever. Anyway, the Jeep is a 92 that I got cheap from a friend, six cylinder/stick, 2" lift for 31" tires, and not much else other than a kickin' stereo (it's a *Jeep*, after all - gotta have thumpin' tunes with a softtop lol). I pulled the interior and had a friend of mine Line-X the whole inside, best money I ever spent on it. Goes where I need it to, does what I tell it to, I *think* there's white paint under the grime somewhere...but no gun mount : (

The Jeep's good in the snow, but I'm hoping for a BLIZZARD this year. Gotta put the new (to us) deuce-and-a-half thru it's paces! Talk about a workhorse, I've pulled trees out of the ground with this thing. 6x6 with air locker front end, 4:1 (I think) low range in the transfer case, and a 10,000 lb front winch. Snow, baby, snow...I need to go pull some MDOT trucks out of the ditch, LOL. Oh, and did I mention the "multifuel" six cylinder turbo will run on *any*thing? Diesel, unleaded, kerosene, used motor oil....one of the guys in the club even runs his on Citronella oil during the summer, keeps the bugs away. No s**t.

Definitely send me the info on the MB, I'll do my best to see that it gets to a good home. I used to work for Jeep and still know a bunch of those guys...

That sounds impressive. I got to drive some pretty wild tactical vehicles, including MRAPs, on my recent vacation but even those won't run on citronella

Almost finished cleaning out the garage and came across my slightly damaged stock Uly front rim. I'm looking for a well-used ( translated "free") tire to put on this - then I have to figure out what kind of "conversation piece" to make it into.

I could always do the clock thing - but I'd have to reinforce the wall first to hold it up

Rat, the Deuce sounds cool with the winch on front. My dad had an old truck like that it used to pull trees over for lot clearing to build. I will take picture of the MB and send to you. I can send you on e-mail and if you want put them on a DVD and snail mail you. If you want I can do the same for the Duece too. I had the Samuri jacked upon 3 inch body lift, modified the engine for the big 30X9.50 mud and snow tires. That thing went everywhere! Then just like the MB sat in the garage for a while until I sold it.

Black I was going to PGCC yesterday on the ULY to do some end of the year QAS work but instead went north with a friend and picked up an AK-47 Romanian made, post Clinton era. I have to wait 7 days to pick it up so if the weather is good next weekend and I can get it. I do want to ride down there and try and get one more state pay what day are you all meeting at Fort Washington?

If you guys ever wanted to shoot AK let me know it is fun to shoot.

Midnight I know a guy who helps set up motorcycle demolition derby if you ever wanted to just get rid of the rim. The take the MC tire and fill them up with concrete I know it sounds crazy but the guy is crazy the event happens during bike week he works at HD of MD he is the shop foreman. K

An FYI for all of the Baltimore Buell riders.
On the news this weekend I saw a speed enforcement piece on WBAL TV. The area residents are fed up with people peeling thru the curves on Harford Road, AKA the seven sisters, I saw a favorite portion of the road I liked on TV. I know the timing is good because its getting colder, I'm hoping Scott sees this!

When the news was on about Harford rd I was trying to see if there was any speed cameras being installed. I know there are going to be speed cameras on route 32 East pretty soon. K
