Rubberdown, once we get on 211, I'll give you a call tomorrow. Just give me a buzz if you anything.

Nance, any chance you lost the wallet earlier in the day? I know these young punks are getting very stupid and desperate.

Twig - Not really. I had it when I ate lunch at Shoeys in Fayetteville, and my next stop was home. The person who tried to use my cards did it in Raleigh, so it disappeared between the time I got home at 2:00 and when they used it at 4:37.

I was very impressed with the police dept. I didn't think they would really care too much, but they did. An officer came out and had me call all the cardissuers back and get times and locations for the activities. He went and talked to my neighbors, and he was going to go to the convience stores where they were used and see if he could get security video.

He started his investigation by getting my physical stats. He looked right at me and asked "what color is your hair." I thought it was funny that he would ask when I was standing right there. Then he started asking Amanda about her stats. That was fine, until he got to "how much do you weigh." She claimed she didn't know. : ) She's a woman, I know she knows her weight down to the ounce. They then proceeded to negotiate a ballpark figure. It was funny.

The officer speculated that I might stop leaving my garage open and my house unlocked. I think he is right.

Mike, I was going to SC to see you today. I heard about the accident on my way to Texas for work and thought about you the entire time I was there. I was going to visit you at the hospital but I am glad to see you are home. I hate that I won't see you but I'll let you and Trish settle in and come by some time later. I know the toughest part for you will be staying still long enough to heal up. Take care of yourself.

Jim, that sucks! The dogs are great at preventing that but you like to travel too much. A security system may do the trick.

Well I got my exercise for the day. After waiting the storm out the dogs were at the door with their legs crossed. It was still raining lightly but the lightning had stopped so out I went. At the fence there was a lake so I got Moose across and let Ralph do his own thing. Ralph got in the fence and after they finished their business I opened the gate and headed for the house. Moose was loose and he did his normal run half way up the driveway. It's his way of asking to go explore the neighborhood. Sometimes he decides to do that with or without permission. Just as I thought he would come to the door, my neighbor's Pit Bull ran at Moose down my drive way. Moose turned and intercepted the Pit. Both poised I was scared for Moose, he's mostly deaf and with a half coat he does not have clear view. But the little freak did not back down. This Pit was the bigger of the two the neighbor has but Moose, even though the smallest Sheep dog I ever had is still 55# and stood eye to eye with Disco, the Pit.

Well like a wing man, Ralph sees Disco and charges in. Ralph, a good 27" at the shoulders and 85+#, towered over Disco. All three dogs were nose to nose and I thought it was on. Disco, realizing he was out numbered turned and ran. My two sheepies took off in chase, with me doing my best in untied boots to catch my two.

The sheepies chased the Pit back to his yard where the other, smaller, Pit named Petey was at. The four dogs now in my Neighbor's yard are posturing, and before I could see, I heard one of the dogs growl and snap. I get in view to see the two Pits backed into a corner and submitting to Ralph. I was glad to see that because Ralph felt dominant enough that when I called him, he came with Moose in tow.

The Pits retreated back through the gate of the fence, but the fun had just begun. Both my dogs, the hearing and the deaf, decide not to listen to me and turn toward the freedom of the neighborhood. After a chase, one more stand off between Disco and Ralph and a 911 call, the neighbor finally responds to my attempts to get her attention about the loose Pits and gets them inside.

Fun morning.

Cool monument

There are some pics in the Jacksonville riding thread, but for those who missed it, here's some cool stuff from today:

What a great day! This is my second ride in cooler temps. I have told Carlos that I need warm weather gloves if we're going to ride together this late in the season.

It was great to see everyone either last night or today in Jacksonville. Fish Camp was great as usual. Maybe next time we'll have a few more C3er's join us.

MTB aka Reflector Man - hope you got to MB OK. Anytime you want to come back and ride OMH on your Buell, just let us know. You're always welcome here.

Kristi, heated gloves are prolly the easiest and simplest way to enter the world of (read: become instantly addicted to) being really warm when it's truly cold.

same as one would never consider not using the heater in your car this time of year, being able to send copious, blessed heat to your hands (and other parts of your body if geared-up appropriately) on a cold ride is something you'll wonder how you ever got by without.

i recommend Gerbing, which these days is available at many (most?) H-D dealers. i used to live about two minutes from their facility, up in Washington State, and it's cool to see how they've grown over the years.

one of the reasons i recommend them is for the ability to individually control heat to various parts of your anatomy (providing you're rigged properly).

if you opt to get their gloves, i'd advise getting one of their slimline dual-controllers as opposed to a single controller.

you wouldn't have a need for the "dual" function immediately, but somewhere down the road, say if you opted to add a heated vest or jacket to your arsenal, then you'd already be equipped to individually control heat to the added item.

their dual controller is not much bigger than their single, and both are very lightweight and slim.

i do not (repeat: NOT) recommend Widder. unless you (or someone else) want more specific info why this is the case, i'll leave it at that.

you'll need gizmos to adapt from the cigarette-style power outlets on the Uly to whatever gear you might decide to purchase, and for this i recommend Powerlet. cool that a Buell Uly comes up first on their home page.

i've had good luck with their wiring/adapter products and service. (i note that they now market their own heated gloves, of which i have no experience).

i haven't looked closely lately at the Gerbing offerings in the H-D dealerships, but it's possible that anything you may need in the way of adapters would be in stock, too.

lastly, i've still got a couple of adapters left over from the FBRAT ride, cig style to BMW style as i recall, that you're welcome to have if needed now or in the future.

Saturday was a fun day. Got to hang around in North Carolina's oldest cemetery with Brankin and Amanda. The ride down was fantastic. Dinner and company at Carlos & Kristi's place was great.

The trip back was more interesting. I knew rain was coming, so we geared up. I wanted to get as far east as possible before I hit that rain band, so I didn't stop for fuel on the way out of town. My low fuel light came on right as Carlos dropped us at 264. Apparently a plague at one time descended on the state and wiped out all human habitation along that road. It has still not returned. I was getting real worried around 25 miles on reserve, as I had not seen a single exit with gas advertised. At that point I just took an exit, got to the top, and could see nothing in either direction. Finally I saw lights in the distance, and what appeared that it could possibly be an Exxon sign. The station was closed, but they had 24 hr pumps!!!!! 4.16 gallons.

I didn't realize it, but my passenger had also been watching the miles blip by on the low fuel screen. She had been working out a "if we run out of gas" plan. I had assumed she would be working on a "find a boy who doesn't drag me out of a warm dry house and run out of gas on a rainy night in the middle of no where" plan, so I was impressed.

We hit the rain right after that. It wasn't nearly as bad as it looked on the radar. It was never heavy, I had on a sweat shirt, and it wasn't even wet when we got home. However ... As you might remember, we were sort of splitting gear to stay warm/dry. I had on a heated vest and was wearing Amanda's sweat shirt over it. She was wearing my First Gear jacket, which is waterproof, but has no heat. We were both wearing jeans.

I didn't find the ride from the filling station to the house too bad. The rain picked up just slightly, and the temperature dropped. I was a little cold, enough to notice that my hands were stiff, but nothing bad.

I parked the bike, hooked it up to the tinder, and went inside where I found Amanda. All she could say was "I've never been so cold. And I've spent hours sledding in Pennsylvania." I put her in the shower, and made hot tea while she was in there. When she got out, she was still freezing cold, and had violent shivers as she warmed back up. Even after the shower, if you put your hand on her legs, they were very cold.

She had a great attitude about everything. She counts it a wonderful day, she got to see the cemetery. Almost running out of gas on a cold dark wet night, and an up close and personal experience with hypothermia were just minor distractions. You can see why I hang out with her. That, and her comment about A&E selling fluff. : )

I'd second Ferris'es recommendation about heated gear. It makes an incredible difference. There is no way I could have done that trip last year w/o it. It scares me that I only took it because Flynuly offered to loan me some.

I would recommend that you start with a heated vest rather than gloves. You really need the vest on to have a place to plug the gloves in, and the vest will keep your hands warm as well. If the Uly has a battery tinder adapter, you can get an adapter for $6 to plug your gear into that.

OMG, I can't believe what just happened. It's up there with Jerry running into guy taking the XB back home.

In 2006 Rebecca and I rode down to Washington, NC to meet Carlos for lunch. We passed a Triumph on the way, and Rebecca snapped a picture.

Click on the picture and it will take you to my writeup about the trip.

I actually looked around for him for a little while after that to see if I could find him on any of the triumph sites.

Well this morning on ADV, I get mail from a guy. It starts out "Did you by any chance happen to snap a picture of a guy on a Triumph headed to little Washington about two years ago?" And it gets better. He actually bought a Uly because of that encounter. : ) I'm still in shock.

Seems like I just did this last year . . .

I get that new bike itch every winter. I hope that some day I either grow out of it or have a budget that supports changing bikes on a seasonal basis.

So I wasted my lunch break today digging up info on the KTM 950SM, thinking about how much fun it would be to ride a ~95rwhp super-moto. As the day wore on, I started thinking about how high strung the 950SM is, and how tiring it would be to ride for long distances when you were done playing hooligan. I came across a couple posts on ADVrider from guys who loved there 950s but said they'd never own one if it was their only bike. Then I started thinking about what it would be like to ride 2-up on the 950SM. I came to the conclusion that the 950SM would be a fun bike to ride, but not a bike I'd like to own.

What I'd really like is something that packs the fun of a super-moto but won't beat you up on longer rides. Something that eats miles as easily as it eats corners. Something that's low maintenance and easy to live with. To top it off, I want it to be passenger-friendly. Now where could I find such a bike . . .

And yes, I am well aware that there is something wrong with me.

welcome Jlpskydive. :-)

Jim N., sage advice to Kristi re: electric vest first vs. gloves, and wisdom i would normally readily agree with, but i suggested gloves to her first in this case since she already has a full riding suit to help keep her warm, she rides as a passenger (with her big manly man of a husband acting as a trail breaker weather-wise up front - as such, her body core is much more hidden and protected from the cold than Carlos'), and, perhaps most importantly, she expressed specifically that her hands were cold during their recent ride.

as such, it might make more sense for her to go gloves first and add vest/jacket later??? (this is said assuming that the $ investment for heated gear will at least partially drive the potential purchase process.)

you mentioned having heated gear with you on your cross-country ride - i'm sure glad you did, and i apologize for not offering up my gear (including electric socks) for you.

Now where could I find such a bike . . .

You (and probably 90% of the rest of BadWeB) need a bigger bike budget! I think our next purchase will be something in the dual sport category. Carlos had a ball last year riding with Noseed. Of course, we're going to need more barn space before then.

including electric socks

Thanks Jerry, Flynuly offered me some, but I didn't think I'd need them. I was wrong of course.

If you have gloves but no electric jacket liner, is there an easy way to plug the gloves in?

Welcome Jlpskydive, Did you pick ur bike up for RPHD?

Fun time Sunday, hope they don't notice the wear on the floorboard brackets.

The HD heated stuff is just branded Gerbings. We do have piles of adapters for hooking up to the bike and the dual outlet thermostat which I will be picking up soon for when I need more heat on the legs. They still come with Gerbings lifetime warranty on the electrics and 1 year on the workmanship. The gloves come with a harness so they can be used by themself, but I like the full liner because it has the plugs for the gloves at the end of the sleeves. New from HD this year, and possibly Gerbings, are battery paks that you can use with the gear when you are off the bike or if you are having charging issues.

Hi, Mike and thanks for the welcome. I bought the bike at Shelton's in Goldsboro. RPHD didn't have an XT when I checked there. Although I thought I saw one last time I was there getting the 1K service. Not sure if it was new or not or just a Red X.

Mike - I saw the 1996 but I figured he was on a Roll. Referring to the quote from said movie..

"Did we quit when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

Jerry meet Mike, Mike meet Ferris. I would like to have a front row seat with the two of you on Road Kings picking on sport bikes. Mike sent a reflector on OMHR flying with the floor board bracket of said Road King. The move reminded me of a certain someone on top of a mountain. I hope that certain someone is feeling better.

Jim, you need to meet the man with the guitar. I hope to see him again next Memorial day in Franklin, NC. At least I hope he will be there.
