I just did mine yesterday, changed the oil (using owner's manual), checked tire pressure and aired up, filled it up with gas and put a little stabil in, let it run a minute, took battery out and it's safe and warm inside !!

Took a lot of swear words to get it done, and more than one cigerette break, especially when I changed the oil and realized the HD dealership sold me the WRONG oil filter, it was too fat to fit !!

So I left the old one on, a little dented where I tried to take it off before I realized I didn't have the same one to put on !

I did have to make a phone call to find out how to take the battery off, but learned which cable to remove first, then unstrapped it and everything seemed to be okay, guess I'll know next spring when I try to start it up !!

Anyone with an XB that can tell me how to know I have the right oil filter when I take this one back and throw it at them ??

CJ you'll still want to get that filter off before any riding is done. You could of fractured the filter inside. So you did your oil change and took the battery out, good for you don't it feel good to know that you can indeed do it yourself???Make sure you put about 4 oz in the filter when you install the new one, thats very important. Now did you change your primary fluid??? Thats just as important also. Are you running the synthetic oil,Screaming Eagle???? You can run that in your primary also.

Wonder what local dealer either can't read the parts manual or is dyslexic with numbers?

CJ,
Keep the battery in a well ventilated area and off of concrete floors. Battery gas is nasty stuff, and concrete floors for some reason are hell on batteries.

Otherwise, on doing your own work:

Bads, I will take care of the filter in spring, someone else said the same thing !!

It felt okay to do it, but mostly it made me think WTF is the man who should be doing this for me, lucky I forgot my ex's number !! LOL

Now did you change your primary fluid???

Oh Lord, just when I thought all was good, what the heck is that ?? Guess I better hope I get that service manual, haven't checked since Saturday !!

Are you running the synthetic oil,Screaming Eagle????

I'm running oil, just oil, that greasy stuff that you can't keep neat and clean when changing it, what's up with that !! And what's a primary !

Welcome to our world!!!

Didn't care for it much Newfie !!

As far as the part number, I couldn't find a part number on the oil filter box ?? Just a number on the inside lid, I'll check later !

My battery is in my living room closet, carpeted wood floor sitting on a mouse pad, was all I had at the time ??

Thanks bmule !!

Anyway everything has to wait now I'm off today to Arkansas to see my youngin before he leaves for Turkey !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will be back this weekend, hope everyone misses me !!

In your living room coat closet with all those fabric coats? If you think moths are bad wait until the first washing and see what battery acid fumes do to cloth. Put the battery in the laundry room or out in the garage on a shelf. At least that's what I'd do if I stored a battery out of the bike.
Just food for thought.

Primary fluid: lubricates the primary chain that connects the crank shaft to the tranny shaft and makes the clutch plates go round and round. It's inside that big bulging left side engine cover next to the shifter arm. On the tubers there's a bolt stuffed up above the exhaust, not sure how they are on the XB's. Refilling once drained will entail removing the clutch inspection cover. If you don't like the idea of snaking that drain bolt out and back in again you can just use a siphon hose, but using a small diameter siphon hose works bese once the lubricant is warmed up a bit.

It's all in the service manual, and may be a bit more than you want to get into at this time. But if you do it then you can adjust or check the primary chain slack at the same time, your's is probably due for a check if not a slight adjustment. Chain slap is bad.

Have a good trip, now go move that battery to a safer place than the living room closet. You'll sleep better.

Battery will be moved ASAP, as for all that other ?? It's going to wait until spring, don't know what I was thinking that I might could do some of it on my own, just reading that made me want to cry !!

CJ,
It's not that scarey once you do it a few times, even gets fun sometimes. Sort of like baking a cake, first few times there is more mess than cake, but after awhile most of the ingredients actually make it into the oven and back out cooked.

We'll have you trained in no time. And don't worry, one bolt at a time. Next thing you know you'll be measuring and reaming ring ridges and chamfering drain holes and balancing cranks and porting heads and welding exhausts and will have the best and baddest personally modified XB in the region. Instead of OrangeCountyChoppers people will be tuning in to watch CJ Bueller on the tube. Sort of like HomeTime, only BuellTime instead. You'll have millions of women and just as many men writing in to thank you for tips on shop tools and uses. And occasionally you'll have a special show highlighting some of the better dealers in the world. Imagine that, Bubba and Daves will be your Heidi and Al (or Al and Heidi depending on who sold the most XB9's that week) helping show the viewers how to do stuff.
You'll be rich and famous in no time.
"And now a word or two from our sponsors."

H - as for the tech session, Bomber's right, I'll lead you through but I'm not that easy. Perhaps we could discuss the matter over a nice home cooked meal, you know, wine me, dine me kind of thing. You have to make me feel special.

Ah, who am I kidding? I'll be home early tonight...
