No need, I was with the guy that owned it, when he bought it new.: )

I haven't been working on them as we're renovating the dump, and I'm only keeping one bike at home for now. I've been riding my Buell for a couple days, but I'm going to get my Busa back tomorrow. Put new tires on it, the big pig feels the best with new rubber on it.

The tires on my Buell are starting to show their age, too.

It was the steering head bearings shot on my bike. I took the front wheel off yesterday and took it to Cycle Gear for balancing and repositioning the weights on the rotor side and that wasn't the problem.

Like an idiot I took the wheel off and went straight to Cycle Gear without checking the ease of the handle bars turning. Wow, were they bad once the weight of the wheel was removed from the forks. It's all very clear now!

I just ordered new bearings and front brake pads (the same as Frank purchased and I'll let you know when I get them Sam so you can come over and see the exchange) from Al at American Sport Bike, so I'll be out of commission until they arrive.

Does anyone know if I really need to purchase the recommended HD tool to seat the bearings or can this be done in some other fashion that would be appropriate and have safe results?

I won't be able to make this Wednesday evening either guys. NBA hoops season has started and the Magic have a preseason game that night at home.

Are any of you big Magic fans?

Paul, are you talking about a tool to seat the steering bearings? If you know where one is available, can you post a link to it? I'll probably be replacing mine soon, too. I might buy one in the near future.

Does the bike have ball type or roller bearing elements? Do you know if they are caged or not?

I don't know on both fronts. I just ordered the bearings today and I know HD has the tool available. I'd be willing to buy it and let you use it. It can't be much.

I'm open to buying one. I need to get back into doing my own maintenance. I'm planning on buying a set of racing stands in the next few months. Tire levers, jacks, mityvac, fork seal tools, etc...etc...I could spend the same amount on tools as I would a service.

At the moment, I'm paying someone else to do something I went to school for. I need to change that.

Buying your own tools is a good thing.

I have access to most tools if you decide not to purchase some. Let me know.

Can you install those head bearings without the special tool Rich?

Probably. You can make the tool too, I'd think.

Yeah, it basically looks like a big bolt and nut that you tighten and it puts even pressure on the bearings and pulls them into place. Am I on the right track?

In Honda class, we just used the grease to stick them in place, heh heh.

If you stick them in the freezer for a while, they may fall in.

I think so, Paul.

Ripped a belt today. Remind me to add Roadside to my insurance. Hopefully I'll be able to get the new belt installed tonight.

If not, I might have to drive the Falcon tomorrow night.

Paul, how much was the set of bearings? I'll be needing to change mine soon as well. Were they a special order item or did they have them in stock?

They are special order from SHD, but American Sport Bikes has them in stock - $44.80 as I recall. I got a set of the Gold front brake pads too - $55. All should be delivered here at work on Friday via UPS Ground.

Thanks for the info. I'll be needing to order those exact same things fomr mine soon! When I do, I'll tell Al you referred me. Maybe he'll throw you a bone on your next order.

Does American Sport Bike also sell the bearing installation tool?

I looked, but didn't see the tool. I'm hoping that freezer trick Rich recommended will work. I'm hopeful.

They are sealed type bearings just like the wheel bearings.....i think.. you can buy a similar type tool from an auto parts store....Napa would probably be your best bet..

I wonder why they didn't use Timken Bearings?

I found the installation tool (Part # B-45521) in the service manual today. I'll see how much I can get it for at work.

You also need Part # HD-39302 (used with B-45521).

45521 is the steering head bearing installer.

39302 is the steering head bearing race installer.

I'd love to, but I have vendors behind on shipments that I have a deadline to deliver, so the prospects of doing anything extra this week looks bleak.

The race starts at 1. I think the price is 20 bucks.

Check out this website for more info. I might go early to test drive some bikes...

I'd love to go to the race on Saturday, but Zach has a football game at 2.
