Ok, here we go...

First, Ed, Angela, and I took the scenic route to get to the rally. We went up Route 4 through Jemez Springs and the Valles Caldera before jumping on the High Road. Here is Ed with his relatively new TT at the Caldera:

Ed at the caldera

On Friday night, most of us got together for a dinner at Ogelvie's in Taos. Very nice little place where we were apparently the last ones to leave.

On Saturday, we had our riders meeting at 0900 in front of Sagebrush, as usual.

group at sagebrush

Then, we took off. There were nine bikes and Angela following in her little convertible. Nick, Luis, Ed, and myself from NM along with Luis' buddy Mark. Dave & Denise, Roger, Bob, and Jody from Colorado. Angela thought about taking some action shots. This is as close as she got:

action shot

We went north out of Taos to Questa. Along the way, Mark got into a road rage incident with some whack job in a Ford Taurus. We turned east to Red River for what we thought was going to be 12 of the best miles on the ride. Turned out to be 12 miles of chip seal. Freakin NM Highway Dept!

On the way down the hill from Red River into Eagles Nest, a particularly frisky Dodge full size Diesel decided to race Angela. He lost. Here we are at the gas station in Eagles nest waiting patiently for the two sheriff's deputies to leave. They didn't.

stop one

Then we went SLOWLY down to Angel Fire, turning toward Black Lake. Once through Angel Fire, we were able to pick up the pace and really enjoyed that relatively short stretch of fine asphalt between the town and the turn off to Mora.

Once down into Mora, we turned west. The clouds were starting to get really menacing at this point. I thought for sure we'd get really wet. Nevertheless, we struck out on 518 and had a fun ride up and down the mountain toward Sipapu. Once at Sipapu, it did sprinkle for about a minute. The roads were wet, indicating that it did in fact rain there prior to our arrival, but it didn't really affect us.

We passed through Penasco and pushed on thru Dixon turning south on 68 to have lunch at Embudo Station. Of course, our waitress was brand new that day. But we survived.

Since Roger had to have something looked at on his bike, we went down to Santa Fe via the river road and the bypass to look at the new shop. While we were there, we bumped into Kim Ingraham who was buying a new XB12XT in his trademark Red. (Sorry, no photo.) Dave & Denise decided to return to Taos instead of going to SF. Ditto for Angela.

When returning from Santa Fe, it was a real challenge to avoid the rain that was moving in a somewhat circular pattern around us. We had avoided it coming into Santa Fe, but on the return, opted for what appeared to be a cloudless High Road. It did rain on us for about 10-12 minutes between Truchas and Penasco. But the rest was dry and we pretty much dried out before ending back in Taos.

At the dinner that night, we had to visit Bob's favorite, Doc Martin's. Dave & Denise presented many awards which fittingly went to the newbies and Roger.

Dave & Denise

CJ & Angela

Bob & Roger

Ed had only been riding motorcycles since mid summer and had owned his TT since early July. Jody had only been riding since April when he purchased his completely underpowered Blast. Jody brought his sister along in an effort to pawn her off on some unsuspecting single guy. Ed apparently didn't notice and sat on the wrong side.

Newbies

As the evening wore on, it was apparent that Nick and Bob were being kept up past 8pm.

Nice & Bob

Luis & Sophia and their friend Mark didn't return to Taos after we jaunted to SF. So, they missed out on awards and dinner. Too bad. Fun was had by all but Angela who had to send her filet back and then didn't like the replacement either.

On the way home on Sunday, Nick, Ed and I took the "leisurely" pace down the High Road with Angela in tow.

homeward bound

The end.

Tuesday Ride this week.

I need to pick up my bike from the shop after it's 20K and Ed needs to get his shifter looked at on the TT after the bolt holding it on literally fell off while he was riding.

We're thinking if it looks nice, we might go north. Ed's never done TA/TP, so that's an option.

Let me know if anyone is up for it.

Great pictures, looks like it was fun.

Anyone from NM going to Vegas for Inside Pass Track day? It's Oct 2. We're heading down with our RV and trailering our bikes. I can't wait to try the 1125 (I just hope my feet will touch the ground). My 19, almost 20 year old son just got an SV650S and he'll be taking it on the track on Fri thru the Femmoto event. Should be a blast.

Take care down there in NM. Julie

Hmm... I hadn't even thought about the Inside Pass track day, but I bet that would be really fun. That would enable me to test the 1125.

We had a local track day just yesterday and we all had a blast. Let's just say that ass was hauled.

I've been thinking of getting my son an SV650. He's going to be 16 this winter and I told him I'd let him do the Riders Edge course in the early spring.

Great to hear from you, Julie. We missed you at the Taos rally this year. We're talking about doing something different with it next year. Maybe Durango or Lake City instead.

There's an Inside Pass Track Day in Texas coming up even sooner. Not sure if there are openings left.

We did indeed haul some arss at the track... Great Fun! This was the best time I have had on the 1125R...actualy best time on any motorcycle.

As for the "Taos" rally next year, I think we need to change venues but not necesssarily leave the state. We should base out of a different town. I've had enough of Taos. We might want to consider going Red River, Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Ute Park, or even Sipapu...and then there is always SOUTH to the Sacramento Mts or the Silver City areas but this may be a bit far for our Colorado folks. We can always do the Colorado trip as a separate event. Anyway, I think we should start thinking about a new destination.

Nick and CJ, Lynn and I are real sorry we could not make the rally this year. I had a few too many things going on. As far as ideas for next year. I really like that area and we go for the Red River Rally every year, not because it is a Biker Rally, but because we get to spend the weekend with some friends and that is usually the only time a year we see them. As far as the other crap I could not careless. The point being, is we like the Red River area but would be happy with any area around the enchanted circle. Just my 2 cents.

As far a Durango other another places in or around CO, I like that idea as well. This year Lynn and I went to the 4 Corners run and despite the rain for three days we had a great time. It is a biker rally but there are great roads around that area. I look at biker rallys very simple. Too me it is a camping trip and the most important things are the people you are riding with. That being said we camped in Ignascio and had a great time. I do not think that camp ground is open except for the week of the rally. It would be easy to find a hotel or another campground in that area.

If you would be interested in a separate event in that area let me know. We will work something out. Maybe the AZ Buellers can join us as well. We can work around the schedule of the bike rally and have it a week or two before.

Jody,

That's a really great looking 9s. 2003 or 2004? It's a really great bike. I love my 9R.

Frank: I love the Red River area but just don't like crowds. That's the main reason I don't typically do bike rallies. The Buell rally is usually only a few bikes, so it's a lot more fun. Even the "official" Buell rallies I've been to in Arizona and Colorado were a ton of fun with 30-50 bikes.

We have something like 11 months to make something happen, so let's talk about it.

I'm with CJ on the bike rally thing... No interest in large HD crowds. Red River is ok - just not at the same time as the HD rally.

There are definitely some other possibilities and plenty of time to discuss them.

Regarding a ride schedule for next year: We should try for one well-planned ride event per month (maybe even an overnight if its a long weekend).

Also, is the ZIA THUNDER name and emblem still our "official" mark? Just wondering... because we may want to revamp ourselves now that we are independent of any dealership. There are lots more Buells out there.

We've been technically hanging on to the Zia Thunder tag. It is independent of shop affiliation, although we are still supported by SFHD for events... At least, we were in 2007. This year, it's been more independent. One reason we've hung on is to lure in new blood through the Buell sales at SF.

I know there are more out there. The question is, how to find them?

Greetings,

My wife and I are planning on retiring in Taos soon, we'll be down this weekend to meet with the contractors. We fly back to Seattle Sunday but I hope to detour by the Sandia Classic.

If all goes according to plan we'll spend next summer in NM and retire there in 2010!

We've been visiting the Southwest for over 25 years, our first motorcycle trip together in 1981 passed through Taos. Two up on a R90s. Now it's just me riding a XB12R.

I look forward to meeting up with your group and riding the fine roads in the area,

Steven, welcome!

There are plenty of great roads in the Taos area. Unfortunately for us, we've ridden them all to the point that most folks are not excited about them anymore. I'm sure it will take you some time to reach that level of "ho-hum"!!

Let us know when you are in town. This coming weekend, I'll be out of town, but I think some of our crew will be at the Sandia Classic. We have been a bit hit or miss with rides lately but normally ride at least a couple of times a month.

Look forward to meeting you.

Welcome Hooligan620 !

CJ,
I'm just tired of Taos... The roads are still ok...

I went exploring beyond Eagle Nest to Cimarron recently. I was pleasantly surprised. The road through the Cimarron Canyon State Park to Ute Park was great fun. A a bit of a roller coaster. The remainder of the road to Cimarron was OK and it took me to a decent place to eat... We should include this as an out-and-back part of the big loop. Besides, Cimarron is a historic town of sorts.

BTW: The area east of the Shamrock at Eagle Nest is an interesting stop...stores, hotel, restaurants etc. Who knew? We always stop for gas and keep going north.

...and the there is always SOUTH!
The run through the Black Mountains and the Mimbres Valley to Silver City is a good ride. Route 15 is infamous...the most switchbacks of any road in NM.

I'm heading south next month - haven't decided on specific dates yet. Probably the Sacramento Mts (Ruidoso and/or Cloudcroft, NM). I used to live in that area and something is calling me back...

My point, tthere is plenty of good riding in NM and we should have our rally in NM. However, nothing should stop us from head north or west to meet up with other Buell groups.
