quote:

Operation: M1, M1A1 Semiautomatic; M2, M3 Selective
Length: 35.65 in. (905 mm)
Weight unloaded: 5 lb 7 oz (2.48 kg)
Barrel: 18 in. 4 grooves, right hand twist
Magazine: 15 or 30 round detachable box
Muzzle: velocity 1990 fps, 967 ft-lbs.
Rate of Fire: M2 on full auto, 650-700rpm
300 yds: 1035 fps, 262 ft-lbs
Ammunition: 108 gr bullet, 13 gr charge, US Service M1
Effective Range: 300 yds

An M1 Garand and an M1 Carbine are not the same thing. Someone makes a revolver and a semi-auto pistol in the .30 M1 Carbine caliber.
I'd post a pic but the editor here is currently defunct and the computer fan is sounding like it could soon become target fodder.

Nev and Mike are right . . .the carbine is a lil guy, with no where near the punch of a garand . . . it was developed (if memory serves) for officers, tankers, arty guys, and others how needed a long gun without needing to haul a garand around (can you imagine getting a Garand outa a Sherman Tank? sheesh) . .. . .

my M16 was a "combat loss," . . ."gee, El Tee, it took a round right int he receiver and fell apart!", and I found an M2 in the ville that I could afford . . . .never jammed, never misfired, ammo easy to get, laid down a good field of fire, and, almost most importantly, sounded different, which sometimes confused little brown brother long enough to be an advantge . . ..

'course, it was awful at anything more than about 75 meters or so, but, sheesh, for that long range stuff like that, we had radios and fast movers . .. .

a buddy of mine gave me this peice years and years ago . . .. someday I'll tell you the field-stripping story . . . .. still makes my wife laugh/shiver at the same time

Ever seen that movie about the guy who supposedly developed and invented the M1 Carbine while resident in prison? Pretty good movie if I recall.
Early M16s were a field joke and an exercise in politics and miscommunication and managerial Dilbertism and general FUBR. Heard a few stories of grand-dad's undigging their tommyguns and shipping them indirect complete with a few cases of ammo to grandsons in-field over there.
Timing was off for me to go, probably a good thing. Walked in to the recruiter, got offered a cup of coffee, was told to go home as they weren't hiring at the time. Might have been a regional aspect though, but '73/'74 had a whole lot of background activity going on. That 70's Show on tv should turn on their tv's on-screen sometime, would add an interesting aspect to the episodes. I still remember a cousin before that sprinting to the mailbox each day as the mail arrived to see if his enlistment papers to the Navy arrived before his orders from the Draft showed up, supposedly whichever hit his mailbox first is the one he had to go with. Spent his whole time in a ship's machine shop off the shore of 'Nam, in sight but out of range and below decks most of the time.
War spelled backwards is raw, seems fitting at times.
=====
Hmmm, thoughts should be turning to Spring and Winter projects. Maybe I'll go rake the leaves from the yard tonight after class. Too bad I don't imbide like I once did, would be a good nite to dig out some vinyl records and sit out back and listen to the wind in the trees in the cool nighttime breeze of the season.
Good music, good times, hard music, bad times, sometimes one has to just sit back and reflect a bit on what was and on what might have been.
Heard Pres. Bush talking on the tube yesterday, mixed feelings about what was said, how many tax payers are there currently in the U.S. right now anyway? And how much is my share? And when exactly does the bucket really run dry. Black Tuesday, October 29th, somehow seems fitting, somehow.
Darn, now I've gots about a thousand old music tunes runnin' through my head. Time for a walk, bye.
300 yard range, eh? Could be interesting, gotta clean the scope lens and go try it out. Anybody gonna bring a fifty? That would be cool, kaWOMPH-thud/ting.
Uh, what was the question?

Mike...Never a need for a question when you are around. You make "CNN" and the old "Not Necessarily the News" seem trivial and quaint. LOL

Will pass on bringing the fifty, but could use some education on scope maintenance and adjustment. Never had a variable before and want to make sure I am pushing, pulling, twisting and messing up the right things without ending up with a lap full of parts. LOL

Mike

not only the 16 was a joke . . .. a number of aircrewmen I knew were complaining of having WW2 and Korean war vintage munitions attached to their airframes, (Spads in particular . .. . A1s) that no one knew how to maintain/arm/disarm for sure . . . ..

tommy guns were very much sought after, but heavy, and not all that accurate . . .amintenance intensive, as well, if memory serves . . . .

you missed absolutely nuthin but not goin, except the chance to try some really good drugs, and having some really fun toys to make loud noises with (Vulcans on the 4th of the July!)

Tom's Trailers, just north of SilverSpring. Take hwy-45 north from I-94, take the SilverSpring exit and turn west away from Milwaukee Harley, go to Pilgrim Road and go north, stay in the right lane and as soon as you see a short right turn that looks like it's turning into a new development and ducks back around north and west under an underpass under Pilgrim Road - turn right and follow it around east/north/west back under Pilgrim Road heading eventually west on this road that I forget the name of but it parallels SilverSpring a few blocks north of it. Follow this road west as it goes up a hill, and somewhere around the top area of the hill on the north side of the road you should find Tom's Trailers with several acres of trailers on a lower lot, probably 50-100 used trailers in various prices and configurations along the front right side of the lot, and many trailer parts of almost any fit or need in a big tin building next to the shop where they will build or repair anything you have as long as it is sort of like a trailer in use or function.

I can drive there, I just don't know what the street name or address is. Perhaps I'll just wander over to the bookshelf and look in the big yellow phone book ... ...

(800) 871-8500

I liked my directions better
I would have posted the map but I couldn't get the phone book to fit into the disc drive slot. ;)

I was in there a month or more ago and they had a couple of nice (relatively speaking) older ones with sides and springs, one had a new axle and springs under it. Maybe just a hair short for a Buell, but was close enough to be able to figure out a workable solution. Price on each was well under $300. They have others there, some total junk not worth the scrap steel tonage price, and others that are barely used and somewhat overpriced. Plus they have newer ones and they will custom build one if you want a unique size. Prices ranged from $50-$1500 for something probably in your needs range. Newer ones closer to the road, older ones down over the hill around the 5th row or so back. They also have customer storage there so don't accidently wander back to where the not-for-sale stuff is (not that I would ever do such a thing).

Let me know when you plan to head there and I'll have to see if I can coordinate a time to wander around their lot too. I might be looking for a small rowboat trailer that could couple as a bike trailer at times.

wilco, Mike . . . likely around early November, but will keep you in the loop . . . .looking for a two/three bike trailer that's non-bike specific, if that makes sense . . .. .

Thanks and let me know if/when we're having a holiday party!!!

There's an outfit on the south side of Sheboygan (or Sheboygan Falls). Might be the same place, drove by it once, forget the name, but that sounds real familiar.

Also check with the crew over at Doc's, they have to know of someone in the area.

Lake

I've heard that classic, while doing great work, miss the target a bit when it comes to masking off areas NOT to be coated. . . .no direct experience, but a number of badweb reports to that effect

Not too worried about them "missing the target". The parts I want done (Bomber Special Dash, Crossroads Race Bars, maybe front forks & triple trees) are not something that could be easily screwed-up :D

Lake...match the wheels and as much else that you can strip off at the same time. Then use a second accent color for the rest.

Yeah, like you didn't already know this. LOL
