Matt: We can flash your stock ECM with race data but which exhaust are you running? The race map is better than stock on a Drummer-style or a Jardine, but not perfect (talk to Chip or Tattoo).

Oh yeah, Chip: Is she still smoothed out, or has she talked her way out of the last TPS reset?

I had a good time at my folks new place in the Catskills this weekend, BUT I WISH I WAS ON A BIKE!!! The roads out there, oh my the roads!! My wife was getting motion sick on the way home. I think I could tolerate the 170 miles of slab just to ride the country highway into their town.}

I have a jardine cf can coming. If we reflash the stock ecm with the race map will it still look for the active exhaust?

Nope. I guess you haven't heard of ECM Spy? A nice little piece of free software that lets us tweak pretty much anything in the ECM.

Lotsa fun.

scotty, the flat spot moved up about 800rpms. if your running around and hammer it wide open around 4k she bogs(though not quite as bad as b4) still worlds better than it was.

and matt, if you aren't comfortable playing with said software, leave it to those that are. it'll cost you some beers. or top shelf whiskey, depending on who hooks it up. well worth it imo.

chip,

Your TPS should not “Walk” out of alignment unless there is something wrong.

Without looking at the bike I would recommend fresh plugs, a set of Magnecor wires, Stock/pro ones are cheesy compared to these. If you know how I would also verify your timing is straight up & check intake seals for leaks and then proceed with a TPS reset. Your TPS should not "Walk" out of alignment.

At idle, the throttle body plate bounces around slightly due to the pulsations from the opening and closing of the intake valves. Typical V-Twin vibration.

You should try to eliminate any play between the throttle plate and the TPS.

Here is how I did mine a couple days before leaving:

The TPS has two plastic index tabs that must line up with the tabs on the throttle plate shaft. Most TPS sensors are installed straight up from the factory and this is good for a while. After the bike is broken in a bit, these tabs get a small amount of wear on them and they are no longer properly timed with the true zero of the throttle plate. Mine was off a bit. This is when most run to the stealership to get bent over & get their TPS reset. More times than not, the wrong way. It is the combination of wear on the TPS tabs, and lack of Common Sense of these techs that seem to always provide awful results & problems. Which is why I try to stear people away from them guys...

In order to be certain you have a true zero try the following:

1.) Make sure you have a 7mm open end wrench before starting this, A socket will not work.

2.) With your air box assembly and base off, the TPS sensor is right on top of the throttle body. If your TPS has two orange dots, you have the new revision with the vertical alignment tabs, I had the old one But This procedure applies to the old style as well so there is nothing different. Adjust both throttle cables so sufficient slack is available. Back off idle adjustment cable until the throttle plate will snap shut without touching the idle cable stop. With a sharpie or razor/screwdriver, mark the TPS position by scratching a single line from the throttle body to the TPS. This will serve as a reference point just in case you mess this all up. With a 7mm open end wrench, remove the two TPS mounting bolts and remove the TPS from the throttle body. Clean the debris from the back of the TPS and the side of the throttle body. Apply a SMALL amount of high temp silicone grease (I use the copper stuff) to the tabs on the TPS to minimize wear & movement & some purple loktite to the bolts, Replace the TPS but leave the mounting bolts slightly loose and rotate the TPS full left (counterclockwise). Insure the throttle plate is totally closed by pushing it down w/ a pensile or screwdriver or what ever will reach down there, then rotate the TPS until you feel the spring make contact with the alignment tabs on the throttle plate. Rotate the TPS slightly clockwise to preload the mechanical zero position and secure mounting bolts. You should notice from your reference marks, your new position is just slightly right of the old position. Now your TPS and throttle plate are TRUELY aligned, without play. Connect all wiring and perform a TPS reset, or get someone around us like Scotty to do it for you. Now you have a solid TPS zero.

I did this procedure right before leaving and it made a good difference in my bike’s responsiveness. Unfortunately it did not help my motor.

Take the bike for a ride above 4k for a few miles. You should feel the difference. I have no more sneezing or lean like surging. I just have a lot of motor noise now. Anyone have a spare motor/crashed bike kicking around??????

If this DOES NOT do the trick my next step would be to replace the Head Temp Sensor, I have seen these cause alot of problems (on my bike) and it did not throw a code either. This is more or less the heart of all the sensors. Everything revolves around this one sensor. And they are cheap/quick to replace. A bad cyl temp sensor will exhibit its symptoms at the same time during a heat cycle, and it will not throw a code. The computer looks for "a" value out of that sensor. Whether it is a static value or a variable one, if it sees "a" value it will not throw a code. The only code in that circuit would be a null value, or "sensor missing".

I believe it is the same for an O2 sensor going out. "A" value will keep a code from triggering, but a null value will throw a code.

Intake seal leaks are easy enough to check with some carb cleaner on an idling engine. Spray at the seals. If the bike stumbles...leak.

Hope this gets you squared away......

Oh and one other thing, look for bare wires and stuff while there, My idle screw was all worn from rubbing when i did all this, which was the main reason for me taking it all apart.

You guys are more than welcome to have a "Play Date" at my house in the shed.(as long as scotty Or JP is there) I can make sure the wife throws my kids computer in there for the using w/ my Direct Link Cable. It works perfectly. You can then reset your bikes properly. Even Data log if you want. That is time consuming though, and should be done correctly or you are just waisting your time. There should be plenty of tools kicking around in there also.

I hope to be back in 2-3 weeks, but that is a guess at best. Scott knows what I mean.

Scott, if you wanted to reformat my spare computer I can have the wife bring it over with the other stuff later on today and you are more than welcome to it as long as you need it. I just have not had the time to do it (i usually use the kids anyways) and I was going to see if you would do that anyways. I think I gaffed it up last time...LOL

You guys are also more than welcome to play at my garage also. I have tools, laptop and ecmspy. Ya just might want to make sure Scotty is there, as he is better with the ecmspy than I am. Oh almost forgot to add that I have beer, whiskey, and tequila available at all times

Calling me out? For what?

Been a standing open invitation...just ask and schedule...have lap top cable and tools...oh yeah...booz too!

I'm not sure when I can make another ride. I've been riding a lot this summer (especially since we got Audra her bike) and have been neglecting everything around the house...

I want to ride up to vermont and camp friday night. Then I need to make it out to Albany NY for a wedding on saturday, Backroads of course. Then I'd make it home Sunday. If you are down for a trip to vermont and then split off saturday sometime that would be great. I'm trying to figure out how to ghetto rig my GPS to the bike tonight. Or I need to get a decent tank bag with a map pocket. I'm packing my suit for the wedding in my saddle bags and the wedding gift will be lashed to the seat. somwhere in there I will also have a tent and a sleeping bag.

New 2008 XB12S owner here. I've been reading a ton about tuning options for the new XBs and am a little disappointed in what I've seen. Anyone willing to hook up to my bike and see if I have a hope of getting rid of the surges and stumbles?

Oh yeah, I'm up for riding too.
