I'm headed out Tuesday, for some road tripping. Destination: Altavista.

Headed your way Wednesday, sooner or later, depending on your wiring hacking issue? Staying at the Quality Inn-airport that night.

Thursday we can head for the backwards country, unless you want to head out Wed and do the trip in 2 days, finding whatever we might find on the way?? I'll spring for a hotel.(if we can find one)

Nope, never ordered them either. Don't ride at night that much, anyhoo. The mirror visor stays on there all the time.

Still thinking about lunch at Franks for the Memories before crash landing in the Noke'. Want to meet me there about noon-ish Wed? Then I can chase you back. Who was the dude that runs that place, anyway. Damned if I can remember. I only know he is a Bueller.

Amen, Sister!

Lusted for the blue XT after I first saw it, and sat, and actually touched earth on both sides.

She still has me under her control. She tells me when to go faster, and she tells me when to take it easy, and she's saved my life a time or two.(but that goes with any ride)

The Monster is a beautiful machine. Get you one!

Jerry, thanks for the refresher!

I spent Friday riding back from the Farm in Elkton, arriving home around 4pm. So no Duc tests for me, and right now it is unsafe to attend those things. I stopped by a Honda dealer and saw TWO street legal, VA plated CRF450x's. I had to get outta there fast. Then Pops wanted to stop by the KTM dealer just to make matters worse. I refused to let him stop while simultaneously checking the bank balance via telephone.

Jackie, where's your head at? where's your head at? I need to get the dirtbike out before the tankster descends upon us.

Tank, I went by Franks yesterday and had full intentions of stopping but... I had just spent the hour passing cars who were doing 10mph under. There was a guy on a '91 BMW r100gsPD who was doing exactly 44 mph until... we caught up to a guy on a scooter who was loaded down and soing exactly 41 mph, DOWNHILL! Up the hill was a good ole 30mph. So I think I can meet ya there Wednesday. Lunch is on me! NUTS

@130 miles today on the dirtier of blue bikes in the garage. Didn't fall once; though it was close on several occasions! Had an up close look at a black bear, verified by another rider to boot.

Tank, you packed and primped? I need to shred these tires by Sunday so we'll be taking the least direct route. NUTS

Dude, I'm having the time of my life,
and there is oil everywhere!

You heard the story about the hand tight oil pressure sensor...

I railed it the best I could, considering the roads here, and put her in for 1k at 855.

Got home and tried to admire...

...all of the oil spray, all over the bike.

Spray must have been from another vehicle. But the squished-out o-ring on the oil drain plug was totally the tech that serviced my bike at the dealer.

I fixed it, and gave the sales dude that rode with us today the pieces of the o-ring.

Service(or transferral) on Sunday!

They can't wash a bike for shit either. It was cleaner after I rode it through the rain on interstate.

...primped?? yes
Packed, no. Packing light, and eating out.

It does not leak now.
And it is clean.(Jackie didn't get over it, it just transferred to a new sucka)

I even cleaned the bottom of the bags.

On point with the latches. The sales dude rides a Uly, and boy did he preach latch tech!

Got the digits in the phone from last visit.

Soo, wait....on Nuts??

What "locks"?

On a good note..
The sales dude told the service mgr about the o-ring thing. Svc mgr not happy. Seems I'm not the only one.

I got the "what can we do for you" call today. I wanted the $115 Buell gloves, I got a t-shirt and a free oil change.

I should have asked for a t-shirt and a 10-pack of o-rings, and 3 filters. Maybe I still can? I'll call tomorrow.

Tank, I haven't added any oil since the change at 1k miles. We're at 3500 now and the fan still seems to be running for a good while; so I check the oil after riding home from hiking. It took 3/4 of a quart and it's only at the "add" mark! I'll pile some more miles on tomorrow and get some oil while I'm out. NUTS

Wait...

You have an i-pod, but your phone was plowed up when dirt was invented??

Dood, get a new phone, and ditch the i-pod.
The whole "hard disk" thing will die from the vibes on the Buell, even in your pocket. Everything I have is "SD"(secure digital). No moving parts. Even the Zumo uses the SD cards.

I have 65 CD's on the SD card in my phone. It's only 1/3 full.

Jerry, thanks for the refresher!

most welcome. :-)

...no Duc tests for me, and right now it is unsafe to attend those things.

NUTS, we made a day out of it, to be sure, turning a simple trip to G'boro into a 250-mile ride (Hiway 8 and some malt therapy at Tuggles Gap on the way back).

really, really liked the new 696 Monster, more than i thought i would. rode it (as opposed to something bigger-faster-badder) as it's the Duc most likely to someday take up residence in D's garage.

gotta tell ya, for someone who's logged 28.5 k on a Road King in the last two years, stuffing myself on the Monster and figuring out where to put my hands and feet (and 'nads!) was a bit of a trick, but all went well and the thing's an absolute hoot to ride, much more powerful than its engine size/spec sheet would lead you to believe.

the workload during the demo was pretty high, what with an eclectic mix of riders and styles all doing their best to be the next coming of Casey Stoner (i've got the stoner part down pretty good, still working on the Casey thing...), and at one point during the ride, as we're all bunched up tight and growling and snapping and generally behaving like the cast of Guerillas Gone Wild, it seemed a shame we didn't keep right on going to VIR and fire off the Big Kahuna gig a weekend early.

anyway, great fun, but way too damn hot down there, and as always it felt So Very Good to climb back up the Mountain and kewl off.

so that was Friday. by the way (and you already know this), being self-employed, being NUT$ about motorcycle$ and living where we do can be mo$t dangerou$...)

Saturday we were up early for w*rk, and managed to get in a decent half-day of same before the "self-employed, being nuts, living where we do" thing overpowered us and we were off once again.

nothing too grand mile-wise, just a trip down the Parkway to Stations Inn is "all," but the conditions were sublime, cool and crisp and clear and gorgeous, and we pretty much made a day out of a simple 100-mile ride.

So Sunday we were up early again, doing the w*rk thing yet again (trying to make up for Friday'$ damage...), and (no surprise here) come daybreak we were dreaming of motoring the open road again.

ever been to Pulaski?

it was new for us, and got the nod because just beyond Pulaski is a road that is represented by the coolest little jagged line on the map, and i wanted to see these serrations in the flesh.

i've got a nasty little jab knife in my tool collection that's pretty much only good for cutting holes in unsuspecting sheetrock, and this road, which shall remain nameless/numberless at this time, does a pretty good imitation of the business side of my jab knife.

great stuff, and we'll take you (and all the rest of y'all) there some time if'n yer of a mind to.

speaking of Pulaski, it's a sleepy little pretty-much-dried-up mill town on first blush, but we found us some fine Mexican grub (in the mountains of Virginia? who knew?), and in the process of lapping town looking for food and suitable libation we stumbled across this old, abandoned car dealership:

8-10-2008

but wait, it ain't nearly as barren as it looks:

8-10-2008

8-10-2008

this was Quite The Treat, and made the gearhead in both of us all slobbery and weak in the knees. i usually don't smoke (except after sex, and only then if i don't lube up real good first...), but a Marlboro or two after our time here woulda been in order.

8-10-2008

anyway, y'all have fun and be safe in West By God Virginia this weekend.

FB&D :-):-)

FB&D-Looks like you're making the absolute most of Appalachia. My other friends went down to see the Ducs on Saturday and left mostly unimpressed: gorgeous motorcycles but the test route lacked any curveature. My trusty Gazetteer tells me the road you refer to has a 3 a 7 and an 8 in no particular order.

Tank, I must have one of these phones you speak of. Do they make them with radar detectors?

Jaxson: I'm pulling a Turtlehugger. Can't go to the club today as I have Mr. Hogan coming over for an estimate around 7:30.

Charlie, haven't forgotten about ya. I rode with Todd Sunday afternoon. Had to suffer him in my rear-view whilst I slid to and fro in the gravel. He did see the bear though. Riding a 100 pound heavier motorcycle than mine with less tires I couldn't shake him. Sounds like someone we know huh? Keep the rear wheel spinning....

Very cool find there, FB&D!

You never know what you might run across.

Nuts,
Phone + radar detector....hmm...

I'm sure I could cobble something together, with a little Bluetooth technology thrown in there for good measure.

p.s. Just about to head for the boat ride(ferry) to begin my adventures.

See you tomorrow, Nuts. Any chance the ol' Jackster might be up for a visit?

Nuts,
He don't do bad for an "Ole Fat Guy".You don't want to tempt him with a wager, your liable to see what he's really got.
I don't remember the road your referring to out of Pulaski. I use to run one with a couple of zero's out of there and wind up in Parisburg(pretty wild in a phone truck)
You and Ferris are going to be disappointed in "heaven"(if you make it there)because it can't be any better than right now. Im really envious.
