Back from the Southwest Torque Fest. No doubt you've read about the accidents that cast a dark shadow over the event. Peggy and Mary from BRAG with their photographer (forgot his name....dern it) and Allison (works on Fuel) all did an outstanding job. Especially in considering events. It was apparent that all were affected on a personal level.

DAve

The Nuked Demon ran into mechanical problems on the way back in LA heading north to AR. Exciting I20 to get back to some real ridin', it started running real rough. After a check of the obvious, I limped it back to Tyler, TX figuring there was a bad O2 sensor (or similar) or possibly intake seals.

Screw This

Gotta hate it when your shaft is cracked

They didn't charge me any labor and gave me a ride to the Uhaul rental

The folks in service gave me the tie down straps and helped me get it loaded and secured

I'll use a shop vac on the throttle body to see if that screw has been ingested all the way before I take the top end off. The last time it ran, it was running like crap but no terrible screeching noises. HOPEFULLY it's still above the valves...EXPECTING the worse though.

Glad yer home with us.

Yeah it royally sucked.

And as far as the recovery from any possible piston demolition: Exacta-mundo Kev'!

Dave,
Glad to see you made it back home also after reading the same thread. Hate to hear about his kind of stuff happening. Hope you still had a good trip minus the mechanical problems.

Roger that Keith. The Nuked Demon ran perfectly up until that point (hahahahaha)

That part of AZ is a MUST see. I still cannot get over how diverse the landscape is within 30 minutes of riding. From cold alpine to hot desert. Awesome!

Thanks Josh. I took the top end off and guess what? No sign of the screw....

So after a good cleanin'...I suppose I'll reassemble. (I am trying to justify a Nallin or Cycle-Rama phone call)

And what luck!? There's a complete FI system on Ebay I'm bidding on!

DAve,
Odds are good, if you ran the engine for an extended period after the screw came loose, that it went out the exhaust but one never knows. When I lost the rear piston, I found parts of it in the front cylinder when I removed the heads but we shut the thing down instantly when it broke. It sounds like the valves and seats are ok with 170 comp. I might be tempted to run it like it is unless the engine has a lot of miles on it and needs to be opened up anyway. How many miles on the engine? If you need any help just yell.

Nevermind. After I posted, I saw that you already have it apart.

Look real close with a dental mirror and flashlight up inside all the nooks and crannies in your heads. That dinky little screw could be hiding on the far side of the intake with it's threads just barely hanging onto a small deposit having been bounced up there by the returning valve. You also might try removing the muffler and shaking it listening for a rattle. Better safe than pushing it down the road later.

Motorcycle crash injures 3

A motorcycle accident in St. Charles County sent three people to area hospitals Sunday. Two were listed in serious condition.

The Missouri Highway Patrol said that a motorcycle crashed while trying to pass a car on a curve on Missouri Highway 94 about 2.5 miles west of Highway D around 1 p.m. Sunday.

The motorcycle, driven by Michael Schewe, 30, of Florissant, collided with an oncoming Jeep Cherokee driven by Tina Marlow, 44, of O'Fallon, Ill. The Highway Patrol said Schewe was thrown from the motorcycle and then was hit by the car he'd passed.

Schewe was airlifted to St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur and was listed in serious but stable condition Sunday night. His passenger, Erica Blake, 25, of Barnhart, was taken by ambulance to the same hospital, where she was in serious condition.

Marlow was taken to St. John's Hospital in Washington, Mo., by ambulance.

DAve,
Quiz on GDB. I would check the heads over. Make sure the guides and springs are ok, maybe a valve grinding job, change the seals. Get new gaskets and put back together. I dont see a need to mess with the pistons unless you just want to change the rings and hone the cyl since you have it apart. There is not enough deposts on the pistons to worry about. All looks normal.
OR........
You could spit and bore the cases, buy those BIG cylinders and pistons from Nallin along with all the other goodies that go with such an endeavor and do wheelies in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear!

Advice from someone who has been there: valve job, new seals and gaskets and put it back together now before your tempted.

Hey DAve:
IMHO, as long as you have them off, spend the $'s for a Stage 1. Send NRS the heads and cylinders and get a set of Hurricane pistons to match your cleaned up(by NRS)cylinders. This way you won't have to wonder about leakdown compression or oil consumption.
Your race ECM should handle this minor performance upgrade and the "Demon" will be all smiles again ;+}.

(BTW: You will want to replace the base gaskets anyway since you might have disturbed them when you pulled the heads. It would really suck big time if you put it all back together only to find a base gasket leak in a few weeks.)

If you're doing pistons, do Stg II.
And yeah you need new basegaskets now (I pulled that stunt - remove heads don't replace base gaskets - which is why I then went to Nallin when I had to take it all apart again to fix the base gasket leak.)

Neil, what the hell were you doing in Mexico?
