Yous say when, I is there!

Brandon, it took me a little time, but I figered out it was you! We always wonder if we'll see ya again when we get together, good to hear from ya. When ya get that 1125R, we already know what parts to discard... ask RocketRon!

Ol' Spudman and Trixie, that's who I've been wondering after. About time those potato heads come back to SPLASH!

You lucky sods! Maybe next year. Ah well. SPLASH soon.

Jaci took the Beemer for her maiden voyage. Apparently its more traumatic learning to ride as an almost middle aged and sober grownup than as a reckless (and usually drunk, as I recall) teenager. She's willing to soldier on but I think she won't be riding with the lead pack at SPLASH for a bit.

The stutter in the Beemer remained after lapping the valves and new rings. Then went away after I replaced the kinked old fuel line. Go figure! But I love the bike! (Its Bob's and Galen's and Dwayne's and Lisa's 1982 R65LS, for those who missed it.)

Brandon, I was practicing my emergency get-offs. It's the kinda manuver I've learned since 9-11. Anti-terror stuff mostly,... bomb-on-board, tennishoe fuse lit, situational response techniques...

...i thought my kicker was down...

Heh heh.

Well shoot!, Ron went down today on his GS. Wet road and gaurd rail. Broke his back in a couple places and broke his Tibia.

He's in Tonaket in the hospital. His spirits are good and in about 6 weeks he should be better.

Heal Fast ron!!
Our prayers are with you,Bob-n-Deb

Get well soon Ronnie. Take some pain pills, wrap that leg tight and get back riding as soon as possible. It would have been a lot more convenient to have crashed at the end of the summer you know. What the hell were you thinking? If you need someone to keep the gas from going bad in your 1125, I can help you out there. It's not a problem, let me know.

No I didnt. I was at Bobs when Ronnie called from the hospital. Hell, Ron's tough and in tip top shape. A broken back wont keep him down for long. Thats what the pain pills are for.

Joe.

Wow! You guys are the best!

Joe - You'd do that for me? Keep the 1125 from sitting around letting the seals all dry out? Wow - so selfless - I just couldn't put you out like that though man!

Really - you guys are the best. All the well wishes, calls to check on me, and genuine concern really make me feel fortunate to have friends like you guys.

Jimmy gave me a call this afternoon and told me that someone had spilled the beans and started rumors of my career ending accident so I thought it might be good to disspell some of them.

1: The 1125 will not be sitting long enough for the fuel to go bad.

2: Yes - I did break my back in 2 places (sounds cool) but not real breaks - compression fractures of the L2 and L4 vertebrae.

3: Right tibia is broke just above where the top of my boot was. Guess I should have been wearing knee highs.

4: Bigger concern - the right ankle is severely swollen and bruised and there is some concern that the ligaments are damaged and may require surgery..... looks like the Portland Marathon and Boston qualifying is out of the picture now.

5: Left ankle has a fairly severe sprain so it makes getting around on the crutches a little tenuous.

And...... how did this happen? A touch of carelessness combined with just a little bad luck.

My son and a couple of buddies and I made a trip to see how many cool roads we could ride over a 3 day weekend. The first 2 found us riding some of southern BC's best roads. And wow! Southern BC does have some fine roads.

The weather was great on Friday and Saturday and we ended up in Ione on Saturday night with a plan of shooting across 20 and home on Sunday. Sunday morning broke cold and rainy. We rode through the rain through Colville and all the way to Republic. We stopped in Republic for some hot coffee and to warm up.

As we left Republic the rain the rain eased up but at about Waconda the rain returned with a real vengance. Just past Waconda is a series of nice corners but the rain definitely was forcing me to take a little off the edge of corner speed. I entered a downhill, right turn corner plenty slow enough and feeling like I had lots of traction. As I saw the corner exit I started increasing throttle feeling confident in my traction.

Somewhere near this point is where I must have hit an oily spot or something because the next thing I know I am sliding down the road at somewhere close to 55 mph. Everything was going really nice and smooth at first and definitely in slow motion. This all came to a sudden and violent transition when the bike and I collided with the gaurdrail. I was a little tangled up with the bike for a bit but started rolling and tumbling bouncing off that damn gaurdrail a few more times before finally coming to a stop in the dirt along the edge of that stinkin' gaurdrail.

I laid there for a moment trying to take stock of my situation but since this was a bit of a blind corner, I decided I better get off the road. When I got up I immedietly noticed major pain in my lower legs and back. I felt myself going into shock so I just laid down again for few minutes. My son was following me and witnessed the whole traumatic event. He ran up to me looking like he was more in shock than I felt. By this point plenty of other vehicles had come to a stop were coming to my aid.

Everyone was great - especially the group of Canadians - and they loaded me up in an old, dirty, ranch suburban complete with wet saddle blankets and a few coils of chains. One of the Canadian ladies joined me for the ride down to Tonasket where the doctors did their job of checking me out head to toe.

Overall, I would say that I am doing fantastic considering the forces induced upon my aging body. Two things were clear in this accident, proper gear and a healthy body will save you and your family a lot of grief.

Lesson learned: You never know when traction may end on rain slick roads. Ride conservatively in those conditions.

Thanks to all of you for your concern and well wishes.

Cheers,

Ron

On edit: The GS is amazingly intack and rideable. I will deliver it to the dealer for a full evaluation and estimate to take her back to her former glory.
