"Thank you for your registration for Pacific Super Sport Riders. This email will serve as confirmation that you are signed up and paid for the following days."

PORTLAND
June 3
July 1
September 9

All of 'em are Tuesdays.

If we get rain on either of the latter primetime summer dates, then I'm giving up motorcycling and going hovercraft racing.

I would love to go again. As far as voting on a day I will see what everyone else can do. Regardless I will have to take another vacation day.

Sorry guys, I didn't see this and started a thread in the Member Only section. Not sure how best to clean this up...

I would like to do one or two more. It would be most fun to do them with everyone, so I would think July 1 and/or Sept. 9 so we would be joining Mad Mark. Any way it works, I can't wait to hit that track again!

I could maybe swing July 1st and Sep 9th.

I'll just leave these damm tires on for now. Not much time to ride anyhow...

Hey - just checked home tire inventory:
Seems I've got some Pirelli SuperCorsa DOTs that I forgot about... bought 'em 2 years ago from the Pirelli trailer. Hello sticky tires! Big improvement over Scorpion Syncs currently on the bike, and a stretch better that Pilot Powers mounted on 2nd set of XB wheels.

Paul - score yourself a 2nd wheel set for your street tires.

PBR crew,
One week until next PSSR trackday @ PIR. Who's going to join me?
Has anyone confirmed that the Latus trailer will be there?
We owe you gas money, Kenny!

Aron - get well soon, and be ready for Sept. 9th trackday.

Paul - absolutely: we'll need sun shade instead of rain protection this time. The water and fuel will also be important, though it's possible to get both across I-5, as was my SOP during Bimmer (car) trackdays.

Kenny - this time we'll buy YOU lunch! The race trailer won't really be necessary, but if we can get a 10x10 canopy tent set up with the necessities and nice-to-haves, then life will be good.

Planning on doing next Tuesday "privateer" style, with gas fill-ups offsite, and hanging out in the shade where possible. I've done it before and it's not too bad. Besides, we get lunch as part of the PSSR fee!

Paul, see you there in the morning.

I have to get my replacement shift parts on the bike, plus swap wheels and tires. Looks like nice weather for riding, a bit cooler than the weekend heat, but no rain.

You'll have to count me out for this one. I am not organized enough to get ready in time. I will mark my calendar for Sept. 9. Maybe we can do it as a group like the first one? I better Aron will be all healed up and draggin' knee by then : ). Paul, did you get those elbow sliders ordered yet?

Just slapped the new shifter parts on... shake down run will have to be the ride up to PIR tomorrow morning!

If I get up early enough (and caffeinate), then 2nd set of tires might get slapped on too.

Got a bad feeling about forgetting to torque a bolt or three.

Paul, will see you if I see you!

Early PSSR trackday report.

Well, first the good news.

(1) Great weather for a PIR trackday!
(2) My lowside repairs went well last night, and the sheared shift lever bolt came right out with the new extractor:

(3) Early this morning swapped my rear wheel/tire with Pilot Powers carefully broken-in for trackday use, process took no more than 10 minutes. Figured I'd save the Supercorsas for next season and $8/gallon gas.

Now for the bad news:

Swapped the front wheel/tire, absolutely no problem pulling the axle, smooth as butter. But when reinstalling the front axle I got about 4 threads in (yep, front axle is left-hand threaded) when the back-torque suddenly got really serious. I backed the axle out again to make sure it wasn't crossthreaded and apply more antiseize, then threaded the axle in and same thing. Did this maybe 4 times (remember, it's 5am this morning and my caffeine hadn't kicked in), and then pulled the axle and wheel out. Carefully recleaned the axle threads and they look great.

Then I cleaned out the RH fork lower using paper towels, and out with the antiseize came this:

That little frown-looking thing the arrow points to is the "crest" of a fork lower internal thread, a sharp & shiny metal crescent that cost me a $200 PSSR admission plus a vacation day.

Seems that many of the threads in the fork lower are partial: they run from an edge created by the centerline bore at bottom of the casting to the bore in the top, so the internal threaded surface has little continuous thread until you get out towards the RHS opening where the axle end can be seen. Evidently, one or more of the partial threads lost its crest portion, resulting in galling from shrapnel.

So choices were:
(1) install my 2nd front end (forks, triples, etc.), easily 3 hours working alone;
(2) ride my Beemer up to PIR (almost did this but my front tire is toast);
(3) try to get the fork lower fixed ASAP and get up to the track.

Well, there was no easy fix. Pulled the RH fork tube and visited two machine shops and the best tool store in town. Seems that the XB's front axle is not exactly a common thread size: M24x2.0 LH, and nobody in this time zone had a tap for me to chase out the threads. If I do buy the tap it's gonna cost $60-100, but for now the misery is apparent:

Paul, hope you a good enough time for both of us today!

Welll...

I went down in turn four and the front brake is having issues...

Day started off well enough, Dry tracks, pitted with the Lines crew and was getting bored following the coaches. PIR lost power about 11 and that caped the AM session at two led sessions for the C group. Lunch and some fundraiser action later, we were back out. First session after lunch started with led laps, three of them then the green flag. As soon as it was OK's I wicked it up pretty hard. Jumped out in front of the pack and had the track to myself. Made two laps that way and then the turn 4 bug bit me. Still not sure what hapend. I do know I tucked the front end under and rolled off the gas. BAD SR! The bike hooked up bobbled high once, then lowsided. It was ofter the Apex so I'm not positive but here are the possibilities:
1) I upset the chassis by moving over too early. I had had a knee down a few feet earlier.
2) I tried to make an in turn correction, and pushed the front out from under me.
3) I got ham fisted with the gas and spun up the rear hard, it swung out and tucked the front under.

Any way you look at it I SR'd and rolled off the throllte which is what casued the crash. Keeping in it I'd have been fine. A hard lesson to learn...

Bike will be fine, and I'm fine. A sore foot and elbow, but nothing like others are enduring now... Helmet is shot, but that's OK it was the one I hate. Leathers are "Broken In" Slid on the back for a bit and have two holes in them. Should look good with PBR patches over them! Frame puck is scuffed, slider is ground down a bit, scratches on the bar and pipes... Cosmetics.

Front brake is pumping up though. I replaced the cracked lever (Thanks to Josh who had a master cylinder and lever form a XB on hand!) and tried to re-teck and go back out, but on the second lap the brake felt wrong going into 4, and the bike didn't pull coming out of 4. I threw an arm up and headed for the exit lane. By the time I got there the front was smoking, as I hit the exit lane I rolled off and damm near did a stopee. Siezed hard. They red flaged the track and I had to open the bleeder to get it back to the pits. Bumed a trailer ride home, I'll try a master cylinder first. Hope the rotor isn't smoked.

All in all, I wish I hadn't crashed, but hell.. I did it in the right place and WILL learn from it! Second track day down!

OMG! That was not exactly what expected and I am happy to hear you are ok and was able to walk out.

Just from the sounds of it if you had the knee back up already when it slid you may have done #3, considering how low geared you have to go around turn 4 and the available torque the bike has. But thats just my guess based on your excellent riding form.

If you need anything lest me know.

My goodness fellas! Has someone ]been kicking neighborhood puppies as they ride or what? Our club karma has been pretty awful lately. Mark-that sucks man. It's that kind of cluster**ck that makes me think about giving up on motorized toys altogether. Paul- sorry the brake got messed up, but at least you were out there getting your moneys worth. Were you feeling faster than in June?

Yesterday I was riding to work and got a flat on the rear. Now my bike is upside-down on the concrete with front brake dangling, waiting to be replaced, along with the rear brake, and....new pedals. Thank God I am talking about my MTN bike.

Good luck all. I am working on getting my garage together then maybe we can have a little get together down in Salem.

Isn't bad luck supposed to come in threes? That would be (1) Brady's broken belt; (2) Swede's crash; (3) my oil slick low-side; (3b) stupid fork/axle threads described above; (3c) Paul's Turn 4 low-side... did I miss anything?

OK, think I will change my PIR trackdays to Monday nights:
http://www.racemondaynight.com/blog/
Cheaper way to ride, cheaper way to crash, cheaper fuel too. I won't have front fork/axle problems with those skewer things. Not sure about dragging a knee, though.

Brady - let us know if a Buell garage sessions is upcoming. I've got some repairs to do, and thinking now about changing the whole front end again. Plus, I've got several BMW projects to tackle, all fun stuff.

Well, I hope this isn't the case, but it does seem that there has been some bad luck this year. Sorry to hear about the crash Paul, but if you have to crash somewhere PIR is a good place to do it. I'm still hoping to hit at least one track day this summer... heck I'd be happy getting a couple good rides in this summer. Haven't touched the Buell since that last ride with PDX Couve Sport Bike guys. I'm not complaining, I know I've got to make the sacrifice now for the long term pay off, but I feel guilty every time I get home and see my bike sitting in the garage collecting dust. We're actually going to close for the 4th. of July weekend, as we probably won't be able to next year. This will be my first multi day weekend in months so maybe I can get some riding in.

Anyway, hope everyone is having a good summer and stay safe out there.
