Larry, don't disappear man. Just cause you don't ride with us, don't mean your not part of this group. I have only ridden with you a few times and your an upstanding guy, I don't think one person here would say anything negative about your decision. I hope everything starts to get better for you, like Spike said, We're here for ya.

Larry - bikes will come and go, your daughter is the priority right now. You know you don't have to have a Buell to hang your hat on BadWeB and especially on C3. Hang in there and keep you head up.

Hugh- Havn't. Tried to upload to Youtube, but the vids are 25-35 minutes long.
Anyone have any ideas how I can splice the video's to take out the parts I don't need. I only have Window's Media Player.

Now the pictures I just resized and put on
www.myspace.com/buellin8tor
then go to my photo's and look at MB5
I will try to get those up on here later.

Great day for a ride today. Weather was perfect. And, I finally found the Lawson family graves. In 1929, Charlie Lawson murdered his wife and six children on Christmas day, in nearby Stokes County. www.hillbillyghosthunters.com/charlielawsonmurders .html It's located up route 8N, about a mile from 65W at Browder cemetery. It's also not marked, and in the woods. Very peaceful location. Okay, I get home, lock the bike in the building, then realize my car/house keys are still in the tailbag. Can't find the spare key. Crap! Next door neighbor lets me use his circular saw with a steel cutting blade to cut the lock. All in all, it was a great day. I've been enjoying the two week layoff, but back to work next Wednesday.

Gears are still turning . . .

I *think* the main rails of the tail section are the same between the XB12X/SS/STT. If that is true, all I'd need would be the seat, cheese grater/tail light, and under tray. I'd have to work out some minor stuff such as the BAS and the seat latch. I'm thinking I could probably leave the triple tail, tail light, and saddlebag brackets bolted together and just unbolt the entire assembly from the tail section. If that's the case I could probably swap between the stock Ulysses tail and the Lighting Long tail in under an hour with just a few bolts and plugging up the lights. I'd need to put my hands on the SS parts first, or at least spend some time staring at an SS tail.

My brain does not work this morning. Or perhaps it's my clock.

I woke up at 5:15, played on the computer for a while, then hopped in the shower so I could be ready to leave for work shortly after 6. So I get cleaned up, get dressed, kiss The Girl, and head out the door. I get in the car and the clock says 5:05. I'm thinking that can't be right, so I turn on my cell phone and it says 5:05 too. I debated going back in the house, but I'm already dressed for work, all I'd do in there would be wait for an hour. So I was real early today. I'm gonna go make the coffee.

Yesterday I was considering swapping the tailsection on my Ulysses.

Today I'm pricing Firebolts.

Spike,

That looks pretty cool! Some German liked the idea too.

Uly Ss

Or, how about this?

Uly Firebolt

I have no idea how they put a Firebolt tail on the Uly/large frame. Heck it didn't even hit me that it was a large frame until I got back to the US and downloaded the pictures.

Taunting,

Spike, I really like the heli bar set-up on a 'Bolt. I had them on my old 9R as well. With the stock windscreen and the heli bar, the wind holds you at a perfect position for general riding. At the track, I may want the stock position but that's a small percentage of my riding time. I did one track day with the 9R with the Heli bars and it went great so that probably won't be an issue. You can ride mine when we meet up.

Nance,

Rubberdown,

On that note- what do you think of the 12R compared to the 9R? I've ridden both, but it's been a while. Last time I got any real seat time in on an XB9 was back in '04 when I put a couple hundred miles on an XB9S. Just going from memory, the 9 motor lacked the punch of the 12, but it was more playful and liked to rev more. It ended up being deceptively fast. At first I thought I'd go look for an XB12R, but there are some great deals on XB9Rs floating around. If I could learn to live with less power overall, I could pick up a cheap XB9R and throw on some mods for less than the cost of a clean XB12R.

Nance, do you know if HPC ever opened a place in Burlington to drop off header pipes? Shipping is getting to be very expensive, like every thing else. Seems I remember you posting something about it months ago. I want to have the Ascot pipes coated, motor has to come out anyway, plus they are looking pretty bad.

Twig, yes, they coated my Blast muffler in their Whisset plant. I picked it up and dropped it off myself, to avoid dealing with shipping.

Spike,

I know the XB9R quickie you did is supposed to be red, but on my screen it looks a little more orange and kinda reminds me of the old Molten Orange Nuclear Blue colors of the old days.

Molten Orange/Nuke Blue S1W

For a true red and blue bike, I think you might have to put on an obligatory Spidey sticker to make it proper...

I thought it looked a bit chromatic myself. I actually didn't mess with the red at all, just added the blue wheels and air box decals. I used this XB9R photo from buell.com:

Spike, Overall I'd probably take the 12 over a stock 9 as it seems to have a better spread of power for general riding.

A stock 9 really is weak at the low revs and the powerband ends up being very narrow, especially on a track day. The 9 does rev quicker but I find it's a little silly to even think "quick reving" when speaking of XB/HD sportster engines. Stock, they are just plain slow reving engines. I-4's are pretty damn cool the way they can immediately jump 4-5k rpm with a little blip.

The 9 is significantly smoother.

I believe the 9 engine is more durable over the long run.

I would like to compare a 12 vs. a heated 9. I might just pick the 9 there.

Speaking relatively stock, I'd choose the 12. I'll know more after a track day on 5-19.

Rubberdown,

On an XB9 I'd probably add a Drummer, open air box, and some tweaking to the fuel maps, but not much else. I figure that would get me to 75-80hp at the rear wheel--well shy of a stock XB12. I like the idea of playing underdog, but I'm not sure that I want to give up the bottom end grunt of the XB12. I'd really like to ride an XB9 again. Another thing that's nagging me about an early XB9 is the upgrades I'd want to make. The '04 belt conversion, longer mirrors, lower passenger peg brackets, and a few other things make the low priced XB9s seem like not quite as good of a deal.

Even worse- I was thinking of doing it to improve 2-up riding. I discovered today that the sub frame rails on the XB12X are not the same as on the SS/STT, so that makes switching back and forth even more of a hassle. Right now I'm really quite tempted by the idea of going back to a Firebolt.

??? I had to think about that statement a minute. I would have to guess that keeping the passenger closer to the rider improves the handling. Right? I can not figure another reason the thong seat would improve 2-up riding. When Carlee and I were riding up at Suches, she just slid up on me and that was fine. I never charge the corners with a passenger, especially Kristi, like I do when I am solo, but we were at a brisk pace.

I am on Daddy duty this weekend, so I figure I have a free Saturday next weekend. It's Carlee's birthday Sunday so I was thinking about riding Saturday. The seven-day forecast looks beautiful. Anything happening next weekend?

Spike, go with the 12. I have spent the last 4 years on the 9,the last 2 months on the 12. No comparison in grunt, torque, and just plain kick in the seat of the pants. The 12 is just a more enjoyable power plant, something I didn't realize till after the transplant. Before then I would have never said anything negative about the 9 motor, but I degress! When we were @ VIR last year, I was pretty much rapped out all day long with nothing else to give out of the 9. On the straights the bike just had nothing, no acceleration, nothing. I am trying to get in on this years event, but don't know yet.
