This sucks! It's rare Ulywife and I both have a free pass to ride, so it sucks to lose out the day due to weather. Maybe next time and hopefully next time will not be too far away. In preparation for the ride today, Webe, John and I replaced the fan on the Uly. Yeah it wasn't dead but it was sure going. The insulation was melting out of the motor housing. I blew three fuses during Badness. I am glad it held up long enough to get home. You have to follow the Service Manual process or at least take off the drive belt to get the shock out of the way. I believe the service manual process was the best. Though not as easy as the M2 rear shock to remove, the Uly's rear shock came out pretty easy. I can understand why Uly fans fail at a faster rate than other XB. The fan location is closer to the rear cylinder and its more boxed in. It was a PITA to get out and back in. All in all it wasn't too bad. It took us about 3.5 hours to get it done, including warming up the bike to make sure the new fan worked. |

Jim- Unfortunately, my father-in-law passed on a couple of years ago, and my mother-in-law now lives in an apartment in Pittsboro. She sold the farm at the end Mann's Chapel Road (which is now being developed into a HIGH $ housing development). We do get up there occasionally and I do ride sometimes; it'd be cool to meet up with you guys next time I get to go. |

We had some not to good moments when the XT tried to bail off of the trailer. What is it with Brankin's bikes and leaving Suches that they don't want to stay on the trailer? Maybe you're onto something Brankin...your bikes and trailers just don't mix well together.

Tell me about it. I remember being shocked when it took $20 to fill up my Miata. Now it takes ~$15 to fill up my Ulysses. I totaled up my receipts for MBV the other day. The gas to ride to MBV was almost as much as the cabin rental for the weekend. |

There are expenses to riding a bike beyond gas, so you can't just say the bike is cheaper because it gets 60 mpg and the car gets 27. But when gas is $3.XX, it's got to be cheaper. There was a yellow Blast in the parkinglot across from the filling station. I left him a note. Will be interesting to see if I get mail. |

There are expenses to riding a bike beyond gas, so you can't just say the bike is cheaper because it gets 60 mpg and the car gets 27. Carlos and I have this "argument" every so often. My truck only get 15 mpg on a good day and the van gets 20 mpg or so. However, I got 65,000 miles on the last set of tires on my Suburban. (He's lucky to get 5,000 out of a rear.) $600 for 4 tires later I'm off for another 65,000 miles. He can't say that about his bikes. I also run 87 octane versus him running 91 in the bikes. Thank goodness all riding/driving things in this driveway are paid for. That buys a lot of gas! If it gets too bad, he might have to start taking the 50! U4euh - I think we have a conflict for the 10th....timing sucks. Call me tomorrow when you can. (Message edited by Ulywife on April 08, 2008) |

My wife's the financial analyst in the family (I'm thankful that one of us is capable of the role!) and she's actually shown me some hard numbers that riding everyday is a break even proposition at best. Running eBay tires and doing self-install gives me a small edge over a 30MPG car @ $3.10 per gallon. My tire consumption rate seems accelerated as compared to most -- 2500 miles on the Uly and I need a set. It doesn't matter because I'll still ride |

Considering the cost of filling up the Suburban is equal to the cost of a new rear tire. I believe the truck will lose every time. Truck 42gal*$3.35/gal = $140.70 15mi/gal*42gal = 630 miles $140.70/630 miles = $0.223/mi 4 Tires = $600.00/65,000mi = $0.009/mi $0.223/mi + $0.009/mi = $0.232/mi Van 18gal*$3.35/gal = $60.30 20mi/gal*18gal = 360mi $60.30/360mi = $0.167/mi 4 Tires = $600.00/50,000mi = $0.012 $0.167/mi + $0.012/mi = $0.179/mi Bike 4.4gal*$3.55/gal = $15.62 45mi/gal*4.4gal = 198 miles $15.62/198 miles = $0.079/mi 1 Rear Tire = $130.00/4,500mi = $0.029/mi 1 Front Tire = $110.00/10,000mi = $0.011/mi $0.079/mi + $0.029mi + $0.011/mi = $0.119/mi Saving 1/3 the cost of commuting over the van and nearly 1/2 the cost of the Suburban, the bike is the most cost efficient commuter. I know this is just gas & tires but I figure all vehicles are paid for and sitting here anyway. Same can be said for the riding gear. So riding to work is basically gas, tires and service. Service again is probably cheaper on the bike. |

Let see what happens in your case Jim. I would love to have a car that gets 30mpg again, but we gave it up for the van. Three kids with two in child seats pretty much meant we had to go to something bigger. Rav4 (using some Van figures. The front wheel drive eats tires in comparison to the rear drive truck) 18gal*$3.35/gal = $60.30 27mi/gal*18gal = 486mi $60.30/486mi = $0.124/mi 4 Tires = $600.00/$50,000mi = $0.012/mi $0.124/mi + $0.012/mi = $0.136/mi Blast 2.7gal*$3.45/gal = $9.31 60mi/gal*2.7gal = 162mi $9.31/162mi = $0.057/mi 1 Rear Tire = $60.00/2500mi = $0.024/mi 1 Front Tire = $50.00/10000mi = $0.005/mi $0.057/mi + $0.024/mi + $0.005/mi = $0.086/mi So the Blast can commute for two-thirds the cost of the Rav4. So if you ever want to find a silver lining to the high gas prices, they justify us riding our bikes more. |

Man, yeah I love riding the sporty, get 45-50 ish if I do not beat on it and I get like 7-8000 on the front tire and 5-7k on the rears mostly caust they are a ton taller than the buell tires. But the WRX gets 23-24mpg, and it has heat and keeps me out of the rain, and is a hoot to drive. |

I wimped out today because I needed to pick up breakfast on the way in. I'll restock on cereal tonight. I don't know if I've mentioned this before or not, but my ex wife will be moving to Texas with the kids. My current thinking is that I would prefer to visit them in Texas, rather than shuttle them back and forth. My company has an office in Dallas, and has agreed to let me work there one week per quarter. So I'll be driving to TX on a semi regular basis. My 11 year old Toyota has about 150,000 miles. I'm thinking a new car is in my future. My main requirements is that it can't ever break and it gets good gas mileage. Suggestions? |

Your wife might claim it's the biscuits. ;) I'd be more inclined to believe it is somewhat related to your driving style. :-> My best luck with tires so far has been the Road Attacks. I'm still running the front that went around the country, and it still looks good. |

Sounds like the Rav4 has suited you well. Another Toyota perhaps? The Honda CR-V and Element are also in that same category, although the Element trades a bit of fuel mileage for utility. For the same money you could gain a little mileage and better handling by switching to a sedan, but you'd have to try one for size. I'm always tempted by new cars, but new car payments are a bummer and the depreciation over the first few years really sucks. You could carmax/craigslist a car that's a few years old with ~50k miles on it and probably drive it for the next ~100k without worry. The payments will be slightly better than the new car, but the big thing is you skip the hit in depreciation. |

Hi C3, There are some people here who have been such good friends and better friends than I deserve. I am very lucky to have been a part of the group even if my part has been very limited. I love my Firebolt and have enjoyed every moment on it and the times with you guys . As much as it hurts to say(and it hurts a lot), I am going to be giving up my Bolt. It has been a very, very hard decision. I have never had a vehicle of any kind that I have enjoyed and has been so much a part of my life. My personal life as some have known has been very hard, and my wife decided she didn't want our life together anymore. She has been very destructive when it comes to me. I have had to make a choice, and my daughter was the choice that didn't have to be made. She is my best buddy in the world and I wouldn't trade her for anything. I tried and tried to figure out what I could give up to keep my Bolt, but there just isn't a choice available, as I need a cage for my daughter. It is not a happy thought as I will not be getting another bike in the near future. I am grateful for the time I have spent with some of you. I wanted to tell you all instead of just disappearing. Thank you all for everything you have done and I am glad to have rode with some of you. Ride safe and keep the Rubber down. Larry Ezzell |

lately I have been pushing Jim towards Subarus, but, most of the automakers have some nice sedans that get decent mileage and have good track records. in this day and age as long as you keep maintenance up you should be golden. I understand you decision Larry, as i assume we all do, but time iwll go and I am sure you will get another bike. Things have a way of coming around, and we are still around for ya.
