Well guys I guess Nuts ain't playing. He has become so thinned skinned lately .

I got my knobbies put on today. Got the Kenda Trackmaster up front but the dude ordered the wrong rear so we chucked a non DOT approved IRC Volcanduro VE33 on there. The guy says it will work as well as my old Dunlop 606's did on the road but way better in the fun stuff.
I must admit I was scared about having a full on knobby on a dual sport but after reading online seems a lot of people do it.

And here comes the question for the resident guru. Charlie, do you think provided I ride like I have sense and increase following distance the tire will be reasonably safe on pavement? You know I am a very reserved rider on the road anyway so is there anything else I should look out for with this thing?

Jackie,
Im not the voice of experience for knobbies on the street. I would imagine they would want to walk with you without much warning. As long as you don't panic and do some abrupt move, it's probably controllable. I wouldn't try them in the wet.

Welp thanks anyway Charlie.
I'll give it a cautious whirl and see how it does. As slow as I am on the road I am hoping all will be well.
Let me ask you something else. I had heavy duty tubes and rimlocks installed on front and rear. I've ALWAYS ran the stem nut down to the rim but dude said it would rip the stem loose when they slip and left the nut unscrewed to the valve cap.
I have never had any problems in the past so what might this fella' know that I don't? Shouldn't the rimlock prevent innertube slippage for the most part anyway?

The rimlock prevents Tire movement, which in-turn prevents tube movement.

I have seen you ride, and I think you will be fine. Just plan your stops in advance, and use the front and rear brake in concert.

I keep grabbing the lever expecting Buell braking, and very quickly add rear brake to compensate. Dirt bike front brakes suck!

I put some pretty good lean on my well worn Maxxis c6006 rear today, and it soaked it up pretty good. The stock front Bridgestone was fantastic on the pavement, but tried to throw me off at every little groove on gravel. That thing is outta-here!

The new Dunlops are sitting in the hall....waiting for some action.

Tank,
I've run rimlocks on all my previous dirtbikes and have always ran the stem nut down to the rim. I wonder if this guy actually knows something we don't or is just trying to sound knowlegeable.
Only time I ripped a stem loose was from running with a flat front tire for many miles to get back to the truck.
Anyways, after searching it appears lots of people run full blown knobbies on the street and have no complaints other than accelerated wear and increased stopping distance. If this turns out to be the case then it shouldn't be a problem since the 606's were the same way. Regardless, when we hit the sections of pavement that connect our upcoming routes I can assure you that I will be last in line (as usual) and ya'll will probably be gassed up by the time I catch you.
Off road you better watch out. I can see these things shooting a wicked roost and I'm gunnin' for ya' . All in good fun mind you!

Jackie,
What he said isn't inaccurate. If you were running low pressures and no rim locks it would be real accurate. We run ours off the rim so in case it does start to slip, you will see the stem starting to tilt one way or the other. The only thing there really good for is when you change a tire, to keep from losing the stem before you get air into the tire.

26 miles on the tire break in today. On the road they were actually quite well behaved but as soon as I hit gravel/dirt they slid all over the place. Now granted they do have 30 pounds of air in them so I guess I'm gonna have to find the happy medium where they do well on the street and off road.
Here she is all farkled up.
Notice the bobbed taillight assembly, shortened chain guard, frame protectors, bars/handguards, Clarke gas tank and of course the knobbies. Thats all I'm doing except for radiator guards which you won't be able to see anyway.
(Nuts, that side trail goes way back down the lake )

Tank,
Unfortunately I am violently allergic to shellfish which sucks because I LOVE shrimp and lobster with butter. I can however eat regular fish provided it has no spices on it other than salt. I'm thinking of bringing a couple of skinless chicken breasts and see if you can work your magic on them. I seem to tolerate chicken well and it should go a long way in reducing the chances of a problem up in the middle of nowhere.
I know one thing. I ain't bringing no pistachio nuts after last night. What a freakin' disaster that was .

You can do grilled butter??

It has a flavor all it's own, and it's good.

Charlie
Send me a PM, and I'll forward the note.

P.s. All of the meat I bring will be store packaged, and will not be bought at Walmart. Farm Fresh has the best stuff around here.

Tank,
I loves me some butta'!! What kinda meat you haulin'? If you are getting a good deal on vittles maybe we can go in half with you so the three of us eat like kings.
We shall have the Trailblazer and trailer loaded to the hilt. Everything should fit fine (including my little tv) but I appreciate the offer!
When you get off of I81 if you pull over before turning onto 311 you can follow us up. There is a little store as you turn on 311 that has a nice, easy in/out parking lot. Easy to see you sitting there as well. We can meet there at say 10:00AM?

Dropped the pressure to 15PSI front and rear and it seems to be a good compromise for street/trail. Still a little squirrely on gravel but I imagine that will improve once they wear a little.
By the time we roll up there I should have close to 200 miles on them which should be about right.
Three more Fridays from today and we are there my brutha'. I just wish Charlie could make it to round out the Roanoke Valley Fast And Loose crew.

Well we won't have Charlie but we will have one of his old riding buddies.
Looks like a fellow named Todd is gonna camp and ride with us. From what I hear he is bringing his toy hauler and will be camping in STYLE!
Charlie,
You feeling left out yet? Still time to call Todd, borrow his old bike and hit the trails with us!!

Jackie,
I'm not likely getting any better deal on vittles than you. I plan to bring a couple steaks, some assorted chicken(grilled legs-n-thighs-n-breasts, oh my!), and some quick and easy stuff for breakfast/lunch/snacks. And lots of bottled water, and more water.

10am, 311, works for me!

Toy Hauler??? And I thought we had it good.

Ya'll aint gonna believe this crap...
(not sure I believe it)

I mentioned before that I found a baggie with some suspiciously stock looking parts for the babyDR??

Well, I tore into her this afternoon. Put all the stock parts back in, except for the main jet that is missing, and threw it all back together.

And guess what....

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
..
.
.
First Feking Kick....put, put, put...
On a stone dead battery, at that.

I have not even laid eyes on the thing since January.

The main jet is the issue now. It's only one size richer than stock, but full throttle is almost like hydro-lock(well maybe not that bad). It chokes, spits, and sputters like Monica Lewinski working late at the white house.

Gonna order a stock jet, plus one size leaner to get her into "raped ape" status.

Sound about right, Charlie???

Tank, If it's sputtering that much, you may need to drop 3 or 4 sizes. Make sure the plug is OK.

Thanks.
As for the plug, she idles and runs perfectly until I get into that last 1/4 throttle. I guess what you are saying is that the gap could be too wide, and the spark is getting blown out??? I'll check that first!!!

I'm confused on jets...

How many different kinds of "round" jets does Mikuni make.

Is it just large and small,
or is it large round, round, small round???

The pics I see on Bikebandit seem like the "Large round" and "round" look exactly the same?? Yet they only offer sizes in multiples of 5(ie: 130, 135) in the "round" category, but the "large round" come in multiples of 2.5(ie: 130, 132.5)

Tank,
Don't know much about your carb.,so don't know which you take. The large round jets are similiar to the Keihin jets in size.Like the carb. on my cyclone. And the Mikuni replacement carb for Buell uses the large jets.
The carbs. we use on the vintage bikes has hex head jets. But if you have one in your hand and go to a bike shop, you should be able to tell which you have.
As for the spark plug, I have seen plugs that would idle fine and break down under a load. Also a large gap will cause it as cylinder pressure goes up.

Charlie,

I must lay thanks to you for the group.
Your knowledge has saved us many mishaps and incorrect decisions.

There aint no "shops" around here that I would trust to give good advice, but one.
Jim McClures shop is 10min from here, and I would feel bad bothering those dudes.
