Bill,
Last year Ras and I rented a van from a rental company and put both bikes inside. It worked out great. This year I think I'm headed for NJ Motorsports park for inside pass in October. VIR was roughly a 5 hour drive NJ racetrack is about 2 to 2 1/2 hours from Baltimore. Hope this helps K

Hey K.. It's gonna be about the same distance for me.. so I'm thinking of doing both VIR (running south this year) and NJMP.. Of course I don't think I'll have any room for Bill since we'll most likely go together and be bringing both bikes again.

Robin should be healed up fully by the time the dates come around (cross your fingers) and she'll want to beat up on some big bikes again..

I'm planning on doing both too.

I rented the van from Enterprise and split it with K, worked out great.

Still haven't figured out I'm getting there yet.

K, NJMP is just NOW finishing construction.. Nobody has been on either track yet (there are actually two tacks there. The Thunderbolt and The Lightning).

I'm planning to ride them both before the end of the season thanks to TPM and of course Buell..

Bill,
Ras rented it and I gave him cash for rent and gas it was good splitting the cost and I didn't have to worry about riding home or to the track. The bikes fit in there really good. Once we got to VIR we found out 30 people who registered didn't show so I rode my bike 3 times and the rest of the day I rode the 1125R I'm hoping for the same so I can just drive up to the NJ motorsports track and ride demos all day K

I think it's going to be about the same between NOVA and Danville and Millville. Not really sure, but last time I thought it looked to be about 4 ~ 4.5 hours or so to get to either. That's one reason why I've already decided to do both.

Bill.. everything I've seen so far indicates that there will be demos there again. Might even be more then just the 1125's since they can easily put some of the new 12's (R's, S's and SX's) on the truck and bring a few less of the water cooled.

Bryce, since I'll probably be loaded up with the wife and her bike, drop Rasmonis a line, he may be looking for someone to split costs with again and I know you don't want to ride it there.. Two reasons leap to mind why you DON'T ride to a track day.

One - When it's done and you have to head home, if you've done it right, you're going to be tired and that will make the ride home seem even longer.
Two - If you go down (God forbid) there goes your transportation and you may end up with no way to get the damaged machine home..
'C' - Traveling on a bike you can't take all the supplies and gear you want to have with you at a track day. Water, snacks, tools, track gear (leathers, lid, boots, gloves etc.), dry clothes to change into for the trip home, etc.

Hey, I never said I was really good at making lists.. in a traditional sense..

I'm registered for Novice/Beginner for the May19 VIR Inside Pass. I am GOING to make it this year. Couldn't last year because I couldn't afford a trailer, couldn't find anyone else going near me, and we had a two week old baby so I was feeling bad about leaving the wife.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out the best way to track prep my bike. I'm going to try to remove everything unnecessary; mirrors, turn signals, kick stand, passenger peg frames, peg feelers. Is there any opinions one way or the other on removing the belt guards, rear fender, chin spoiler, etc? I'd prefer to leave them on, but if any of that gets damaged in a fall, would it be best to have them off to lower repair costs?

Also, am looking to get the delron sliders from American Sport Bike, and the pitbull stands, for maintenance and holding it up at the track.

Thanks for any feedback you all have! Very much looking forward to this.

K, sorry to hear that.. although it's proof positive that word of what a great deal this event is has gotten around.. I guess we're suffering for telling everyone how good it was last year...

Matt.. For your first track day, you don't need to go that far by half.. Here's a few thoughts from one that does a lot of dates.

If you're not going to turn it into a full time track only bike, I'd suggest not getting too crazy on the bike prep.

First, remove the mirrors. Pull the tail light bulb. Buy Painters Tape. Use this to cover every lens (including the reflectors). Remove the peg feelers and make sure every thing is tight and nothing is ready to vibrate loose. You will not need to wire the bike (which is a lot of work the first time and not really needed unless you're going racing.

Standard frame pucks are fine. You can also add the sliders to the frame. Save the rest of the money you would have spent on all kinds of parts and tools and spend it on the supplies you will need for survival.

Make sure you complete all 'heavy' work on the bike before you load it up to come to VIR. Don't work on the bike or change oil etc. while you're at the track unless there is no other choice. Take your time and double check filter, drain plug and filler cap. You should be fine once you're there.

Concentrate on your important gear, you'll want NEW or very close to new tires. Make sure you have good brake pads, you will use tires and brakes a lot harder then on the street and they will show more wear then a week of regular riding.

You'll want a good leather/textile suit. Leather is preferred and usually has puck attachment points. There are a few competition textile suits and you may want to look for one of those as well. Lid, Helmet, Brain bucket.. Make sure it's a newer model and no matter what you've read, you'll want a good one with DOT/SNELL or similar ratings.

Good gloves and well made riding boots. I have Held gloves and Sidi boots (and yes they cost a pretty penny but I'm worth it).

Water, you'll want to hydrate well. Start a couple of days before the event. Bring simple tools, tire gauge, your tape and whatever else you want for comfort in the paddock.

Get good rest before going to the track, no alcohol, the effects can hurt you during the day as it will help dehydrate you and could also make you sluggish when you want to be on top of your game.

Any other questions, drop a note and I'll try and help as best I can, at least until we meet up at the track.

Matt.. I forgot a couple of things.. it may sound minor but..

Pull the headlight wire turning off the running headlight. Less chance of it melting the glue on the tape to the lens. You can usually unplug the lamp, then tape the two leads together so they are easy to find later.

MOUTH GUARD .. get something like a 'Shock Doctor' (about $5) it'll do two things, in the event of a get off, it'll protect your teeth from a slamming jaw (say in a high side) and since it cushions the blow, you are less likely to suffer a concussion from the contrecoup blow during a hard get off; jaw slams upper palette, head slams ground, brain bangs back and forth, you get concussed.

Back Protector - a hard shell back protector may sound like it's going overboard, but even a lowside off the track can cause serious back injury (think Wayne Rainey) and the shell over the spine could save you some serious pain and suffering.

Sorry, it was late for me when I wrote your reply and the brain wasn't fully engaged.

edit was the addition of the head light idea

Damn Ramon.. This sucks!

Kathy, did you actually call the number and was told it was sold out? I'm curious since they usually hold some spots for Buell owners that aren't available to the General Public.. (at least they did last year)..

I just got off the phone and according to SBTT (this years operators of the Inside Pass) a lot of dates have already sold out..
Barber, Road America, New Jersey - to name a few..

There are still spots available at VIR ( a few as of 0950 Thurs. 10 April) If you can get in there, I may have room for one other bike in/on my trailer.
Remember, it's South not North like last year so it's not the same track we ran, the paddock is smaller and I'm sure the number of riders is more limited. This was probably brought about by the number of no shows last year.

Kathy & Matt, you may just want to pull the fuse for the headlight. That's usually easily accessed from under the seat.

Unless you ride an 1125R.. then, pulling the headlight fuse kills the ignition..

Damn!

Blublak,
Thanks for all the tips. Looking at your profile pic, that suite looks great. Looks to fit you pretty well. I've looked for one piece units, but have never found anything that fits (scrawny little dork, 6ft, 140lbs, 30in waste), nor that I can afford. I suppose ~$700 is a small price for life/health. I have full leather pants and jacket that zip together in back, both with CE guards. Also got some nice boots and gloves. But they are more geared towards street/commute use, remove quick and easy.

I haven't seen the hard back protectors that you guys keep mentioning. Any tips on where to find stuff like that? Do you prefer something solid or articulated?

Mouth guard is a great idea! I NEVER would have thought of that.

I have a forcefield protector that is very comfortable and didn't cost too much, $125.
I like it.

You'll be best off ordering it online, no one around here has decent back protectors.
Don't wait til the last minute like I did last year.

Matt..

There are a lot of places on line that carry back protectors, just do a search and you'll find 'em. They're not that expensive, unless you decide on a 'high end' model. As for suits. Find one that's not too loose and you should be able to get it adjusted (Lizzy Leathers is good at such things) .. Mine is more along the lines of.. well, I'm kind of rounded so it tends to fill out a bit.. if you know what I mean.. You'll want one that's articulated, usually they will allow only one direction of movement.

The two piece should be fine, but you'll want to have a full circumference zipper added. As for the boots and gloves, well if the gloves are gauntlet style, they should work fine. Boots should be over the ankle and (normally for track use) have the pant legs tucked into the boots.

That should about do it.. Hopefully.. Like I said, any other questions, just ask, there's more then enough folks here that can help and of course.. we will..

So Time Is Ticking Away on this one..

I'm trailering down and it looks like I'll be alone as Robin will be traveling for business. So it is Possible I will have room for another bike - Anyone that's still looking for a way down to VIR and is up for splitting gas costs.. well.. Drop a note here ..

Also, is everyone up for the 'Pit In' that we did last year? Get as many of us in one area of the pits (South paddock is a lot smaller then North) and we can 'mutally support' each other as we ride ..
