Happy New Year!

Jim- Thanks for the pictures. My kickstand has the same spot, but the end of the stand hits the exhaust before that spot makes contact. The stand itself looks straight and it doesn't look like the exhaust tip is bent, so something else must be out of whack. I'll have to keep staring at it until I figure it out.

The new bike. : )

Twig's ride.

Mark's Sportster

A few more.

I'm sure they had no idea what they were in for when they let U4euh take the lead. : )

I enjoyed the day immensely. The company was great and the Girbings The Girl bought me for Christmas kept me nice and warm.

I had a great time seeing and riding with everyone today, even if I did have to bail out a little early. It was fun to have such an eclectic group.

I think it's going to take more time for me to really bond with the Ulysses, but I can tell that this bike and I are going to be good friends.

Glad to see you guys got together. Webe and I had a good ride to Kerr Lake. I plotted a ride up that covered some good roads. We ended up a few miles into Virginia before we turned south for home. There are roads we still need to explore up there.

I had fun, but the Jacket failure really got me, the ride home was SO SO cold....everything is sore form being next to frozen...

but it was a good ride, a little bunched up in some of the corners, not that Rubberdown or U4euh noticed (in the lead). Hopefully I can get my jacket fixed...or somebody gets me that Icon jacket I have been eyeing for my birthday this month......yeah right...

Jim,
Rather than respond directly right off, I am first choosing to respond with this image:

Hook Line and Sinker

You bit, but your conclusion is WAY THE HECK off! The message I posted was meant to be cryptic, and I had hoped that it would cause more confusion than having enough info for someone to attempt to piece something together. An 1125R will NOT be my next Buell.

Rubberdown,
Christmas in January? If there's one thing I've learned, anythings possible... But, personally, I think January may be a little too ambitious.

I guess we'll just have to wait 18 more days, won't we?

Since we have a concentrated group of Ulysses owners here; What are you guys running for transmission fluid? On my '04 I just used Amsoil v-twin 20w50 in the engine and transmission for simplicity, but I recall that when the '06 transmission came along they changed the factory spec to Formula+ and there was some talk about it being specific to the new clutch. Can I stick with my Amsoil for the engine and transmission, or do I need to use the Formula+? How about HD Syn3? When it came out the big tagline was that it was formulated for all HD engines, transmissions, and primaries, but that was before the new dog-ring transmission with helical cut gears. Does HD/Buell recommend Syn3 for the '06 Buell transmission?

As much as m2nc and I ride ,so far we just used what the dealer recommended ,which is HD20W50for engine and Formula+ for trans. This is what Sheltons of Goldsboro does.
Note m2nc and I have agreed that we are gonna go by the MOM under lubrication table, and use HD 50W in the summer months to help with heat in the summer above 40 deg.
As for Syn3,other than cost I dont see where that would harm a thing for it to go in both engine and trans, but contact Lee,( Service manager)
at Sheltons of Goldsboro,he is really up to date on the Formula + and Syn3.

Note m2nc and I have agreed yep.

I read that some synthetic transmission fluids were harmful to the new (post-05) transmissions. I stick with what works. I research the reason HD recommends straight weight oil in ambient temperatures above 60°F. It comes down to the polymers that are added to the oil to give it the multi-grade. In extreme temperatures those polymers break down and leave a film on internal engine parts similar to carbon build up. Straight weight oils do not have the polymers so they are better when your engine temperature increases past 360°F. Synthetic motor oils are advertised to withstand extreme temperatures, but I have had no problems with normal motor oil at the lower cost. The M2 has 46,000 miles and the motor sounds better than the Ulys. As far as I know it has always had HD motor oil. Now that I understand that air cooled motors can operate outside the recommended temperature ranges of a multi-grade oil, this spring I will go with HD SAE50, then change back in the fall to SAE20-W50.

Spike - This is from memory, but I believe when the 06 transmissions came out, Formula+ was the only recommended fluid. In 07, Syn 3 was added to the list.

The issue is the helical cut gears put shear forces on the oil which are not seen inside an engine.

As for Amsoil, I'd call Amsoil and ask.

The helical gears are what have me thinking. I know transmissions tend to shear engine oils, but I didn't know if the new helical gears caused additional shearing like a hypoid gear. I could easily see how a change in gear design could require the use of a specific gear oil. However, if HD recommends the use of their own Syn3 engine oil then it must be ok to run engine oils in the new transmission.

I don't have anything against using HD oils, but it's a lot more convenient if I can use the same fluid for the engine and transmission. I have a customer who sells amsoil and if I buy it from him by the case it costs me less per quart than HD360 oil. As an added bonus, if I use engine oil in the transmission I get to skip out on the nasty gear oil smell. : )

I started reading amsoil's website while posting this and found this info for their MCV 20w50:

"With AMSOIL MCV, there is no need for separate transmission or primary chaincase lubricants. It is absolutely shear stable and will not thin out from mechanical activity. AMSOIL MCV performs like a gear lube without the negative effects of extreme pressure additives."

" AMSOIL Synthetic 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil is recommended for air or liquid cooled 4-stroke engines. It meets SAE 90, API GL-1 gear oil requirements and is recommended for transmissions and primary chaincases. AMSOIL MCV is recommended for Harley Davidson®, Buell®, KTM, Ducati®, Aprilia®, BMW®, Triumph® and other motorcycles where 15W-50 or 20W-50 engine oils or SAE 90, GL-1 gear oils are used. Not recommended where an API GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil is required."

They also list the MCV 20w50 as a suitable replacement for HD Formula+ in their cross reference table.

Yes, it was sold. Even had a normal Wisconsin license plate on it.
Next up is Uke's. The 'tower of bikes' out front is always cool.

Uke's 1

Wait, what's up with that strange yellow pearl RSS up there? My suspicions are that it is the remnants of the super cool RSS Engineering bike nicknamed 'Screamin' Yellow Peril'. Hopefully some of the pics I took of it in it's various incarnations will make Court's and Dave Gess's book. If not, call me on it later and I will post scans of the pics.

The next group of pics will be most interesting to those who will be camping during this years Homecoming,

Alright. When I posted about the possibility of camping for this years Homecoming I mentioned that the route from the camping site to Buell was one of my favorite roads back home. Well, here it is coming from Buell (well more accurately - my parents house, which is only ~ 1/2 mile away from Buell) to the camping site.
Coming up to the square:

Square

Going part way around the square and looking at the East Troy House. Great place! They had an AWESOME blues band - with a 17 year old who can jam - my last Saturday night home.

Square 2

Out in the country. What's that sign say?:

Country

Just 'round the corner:

Country 2

Downhill left hander:

Country 3

A little further out, coming up to some NICE curves:

Country 4

OK, every once in a while you must stop and look at the scenery:

Country 5

The left arrow sign is kinda hidden by the tee, but there is a downhill left hander just ahead:

Country 6

that goes directly into a downhill right hander, with a short straight:

Country 7

that allows you to build some speed for the last high speed curve before the speed limit drops for some really fun twisties (shown here near the end)

Country 8

Thank God I never met a cop in that section...
Closer to my buddies place there was this cool photo op. The corner of the flag had caught on the tree and with the wet snow and driving winds the flag had frozen in this position:

Flag

For those interested in Homecoming, I can pretty much guarantee that the snow will be gone and the roads will be a LOT clearer by July...

well after the zipper issue on the jacket on Tuesday, you think it was brain surgery to replace a zipper on a jacket, none of the local places was to touch it, my usual alterations lady told me to buy a new jacket....or wear it without zipping it up..
