Had to work evac duty some years back in the Greenhorn mountain area above Ferris's old place. Got to watch that "wall of fire" consume whole mountains in minutes. When we asked how we would know when to get ourselves off the mountain and down 155 we were told to watch the fire trucks. If they headed down the mountain code 3 we had better be rollin code with them or we would be dead five minutes later. All it would take was a slight wind change.
Kinda strange clouds over the Tehachapi mountains tonight, I bet it's smoke.
Take care all you southlanders.

This is frightening being in the Desert in a fire-safe area and knowing so many people who are (and will be) affected by these fires.

What is scary is they're running out of fire-fighting assets! Personnel, air and ground.

National Guard is arriving...

That and with the extreme winds, airdrops just aren't safe.

This is what we woke up to. It smells like a campfire around here.

Went to pick up the newspaper outside and made this trail back to the house. Gross.

We are safe because Lighton shot all the looters last night before he came over to watch Monday Night Football.

Lighton drank the lions share of my emergency Guinness supply before reloading. At that point, everyone, including me, looked like a looter to him.

Green Valley is looking safe-ish.

We were tracking the fireline traveling east to west from Bouquet Canyon over to San Francisquito canyon during the course of a day. We were fortunate because the wind did not blow towards us - but across us. The fire traveled maybe 3 miles south of us.

Now, it's mostly just gently smoldering little smokey spots. San Fran and Bouquet are still closed south of Spunky - but conditions sure are better.

San Francisquito is open all the way this morning. It was dark - but I did get to see a smoldering tree near the bottom.

I hope everyone in OC and San Diego does ok. We have some family that was affected.

It's far from over down here, but the worst has past for us because the Santa Ana winds have let up and the usual onshore flow has resumed. The fires to the east of us have slowed their westward advances and are not being wind whipped into towering, unstoppable firestorms at this time. Hardly under control, but at least structures can be saved easier now. The bad part is that there are now other east and north communities that weren't highly threatened before that are now being evacuated.

We actually had a sunrise today.

Everything smells bad. Will have to replace all the vehicle air filters in a couple days, the roads are covered in ash.

Dora you might hit up some of the SacBorg-types. Rex Chaney usually organizes the local meetings and group activities. He posts on Badweb as REX

We have a division up in Sunnyvale and I have some ex-NASA buddies who live in San Jose

EL MIRAGE FINAL MEET

This weekend..(November 9th , 10th and 11th) will be the final event of the year!
My plans are to head out to arrive just before sunset for lakebed photo-ops on Sat. night.Of course that would mean showing up in the 4-runner to sleep instead of coating a bike with dirt.Sundays the big day and the sunrise over the lake can be astounding!
If you can come,So-Calers,park on the right side(looking down the startline)and the dust wont be so bad .For those whom have never been to a meet...you'll get your fill of Motoheads!!P.S. dont forget your camera!!!

Anyone here gonna hit up Denny's on Saturday morning before the IMS in Long Beach? The last couple of years the gathering seems not to have really happened.

Saro, Don't know about Denny's, but here's an alternative:

Al Lighton sent an email with the following info, in part,

quote:

Greetings, Buellers.
This weekend is the IMS show in Long Beach. In lieu of the normal Wednesday SCAB meeting in Yorba Linda, we'll meet this weekend centered around the show. For SCAB folks interested in going as a group, here's the plan.

We'll meet for breakfast at the Corner Bakery in Lakewood prior to heading to the show. The link for that particular restaurant is http://www.cornerbakerycafe.com/locations/live_ind ex.aspx?STATE=CA&ID=97&S=1 , and the googlemap to there is http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&tim e=&date=&ttype=&q=5312+Clark+Avenue,+Lakewood,+CA+ 90712&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=32.114675,69.697 266&ie=UTF8&ll=33.833207,-118.1353&spn=0.065735,0. 136127&z=13&iwloc=addr&om=1

Get to the restaurant at about 9:30AM, we'll be at the show by 11 or so. After a few hours at the show, Andrew Scammon has invited everyone back to his place for a small get together. I don't have his address here, so I'll send a second mail out that has the details of how to get to his place. Plan is to get to his place around 2-2:30 or so.

Sparky-

Dunno if it'd matter. I doubt anyone will run test rides in the rain. Maybe they want us to ride production bikes - and that they need those production bikes to go to eager owners...

I wonder if Kaw is doind test rides. I'd like to take a Concourse14 around the block.

Good preview for you lucky enough to be at Laguna on the 1125R if you hadn't yet seen it. Good switching from McWilliams doing the briefing to the scenes from the bike.

Good overview of Laguna by McWilliams for those who are going to be at the Inside pass too!

I'm trying to see if we might get enough folks together to get a discount round trip shipping to Homecoming next year.

I have asked for quotes from REPUTABLE shippers who regularly handle motorcycles. Looks like it's going to be around $800 to have a bike shipped round trip from Glendale HD/Buell to Hal's HD/Buell for the Homecoming dates.

We have a few folks who have expressed interest in attending homecoming but would like to have their bikes there - but don't have two extra weeks for the trip.

Let me know by PM if you'd be interested. We MIGHT be able to get a better price but first look, 10 bikes will be about $8000 (or $800 each for the round trip)

Let me know also if you would be willing to send the shipper a deposit. We MUST have commitments in order to get the discounts.

Until a better deal comes along, we're talking to Federal - they give a pretty big AMA discount.

They will be emailing me their requirements and I'll be glad to pass that info along.

Well... looking more into a 24 foot box van. Looks like even with crappy mileage that would be around $5000 for the round trip. Still would need somebody to drive it - and we'd need to have the bikes on pallets since there are NO floor tiedowns.

I'm going to go look at the commercial vans available for rent.

Stay tuned.

Be way cool to chip in on truck, see if maybe we can talk Glendale into paying one of their dudes salary to drive round trip... dunno... gonna take some thinking.

I know I can't add 3 days on each end of the vacation and I sure can't take more time off in order to take an interesting route and I SURE don't want to just pound the 2200 miles at 1100 a day... and then try to enjoy myself out there.

How about an enclosed trailer, something like the Love Shack, only shorter and emptier, but could load 8 to 12 bikes?

Who is going to rent the truck to pull it?

Worth looking into though since it's all new to me anyways. Might be surprised.

Realize that a truck that could pull a trailer that large is going to cost about $0.70 a mile - that'd be the obligation we'd have to whoever would loan the truck to us.

OK - more brainstorming here...

I located a tralier we could use which will haul a half dozen bikes. Couple more in the bed of a pickup.

Anybody interested in being the group driver or drivers?

Anybody have a pickup that could pull a trailer that far round trip?

I'm guessing a pickup direct costs at about $0.70 per mile.

I hauled my Dad's '65 Dodge Dart on a U-Haul transporter behind a U-Haul box truck with my Firebolt in it from Mariposa. Does that count?

Sorry, nothing practical like a pickup, just 2 sports cars, a retro, a family car and 3 Buells in the stable. : )
