Twig - Apparently lack of riding. I think the battery wasn't well charged. I haven't been on the bike a lot since Spike brought it back. I knocked out enough riding in October to keep me sated for a while. I guess the battery just ran down. It definitely had problems that morning, but they tested everything and both the battery and the charging system were good. And it runs and starts fine for me now.

I still think I'm going to put a new battery in it. The current one is two years old, I'd rather replace it before it decides to force me to.

Apparently lack of riding. Yeah Jim, you really ought to get a few miles in sometime ...

On a more serious note, was it a cold morning when you thought you had a problem? The oil get pretty darn viscous at low temps. I've heard letting the lights stay on a little prior to attempting to start allows the battery to warm up some and produce more amps.

I'm thinking about getting an "Odyssey" battery for the HP2. It's supposed to be the best. Seems like it would be well suited for the Ulysses as well, at least in name.

Well the reason I was put the tire on in such haste yesterday was I had considered taking today off and going riding. I'm not sure my boss has forgiven me for the cross country trip yet, so I chickend out. But I was toying with the "I wonder if Mike wants to trade again" thought.

Jim, this is about the best $39.95 you could ever spend on a motorcycle:

you attach the ringed terminals on the cable on the lower right to your battery, and route the SAE connector on the other end to a safe spot that's easy to get to. this makes plugging your bike into the Tender when you get home from a ride all of about a three-second deal.

it is SO nice the next time you wheel your bike out of the garage and push the electric leg to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that your battery is as happy about going riding as YOU are.

speaking of riding, since my boss is as gonzo about quality seat time as i am, he fully understood when i told him this morning that Denise and i were heading out on the bike for the day.

i mean, ya just cannot waste 70-degree weather in the middle of frickin' December. : )

FB - The dealer gave me one of those when I bought the Uly. It's still in the plastic, perhaps I should take it out. They even wired up a connector before they sold it to me, thats what I used for the heated grear.

I wasn't quite sure why they gave me a tender. I mean I don't keep the car on a battery tinder and I assume its battery is similar. I assumed it was for people who didn't ride all winter. Until now that assumption has worked well. I'm beginning to see the light.

I was thinking how little I have been riding lately. Here I had a two months head start on Jim and he has 12,000 more miles on his Uly than I have on mine. So the irony that Jim's battery is dying do to lack of use is just too much. Mine has become 80% Commuter and 20% Pleasure, so the little 22 miles a day must be good for the battery.

Is anyone else going to the ADV dinner this weekend?

Jim, it sounds like you've got all the elements already in place to make your battery eternally happy. : )

i *think* m/c batteries can be a little moodier than a car battery due to the overall size difference, i.e. a car battery - with its considerably larger quantity of acid and plates - might have an easier time fighting off the effects of sitting unused for a period of time?

also, because of that size difference, it seems logical to assume that a car battery would have vastly more cold cranking amps and reserve capacity in case the vehicle being started was at all recalcitrant about coming to life.

anyway, it's pretty cheap insurance keeping a vehicle, ANY vehicle, plugged into a Tender when not in use. i've read that a battery can have a MUCH longer service life as a result, plus there's the added benefit of knowing when you push the button on a cold, wintry, thick-oil morning that the battery is absolutely 100% ready and willing to do its job.

you mentioned running your heated gear from the SAE connector on the Tender lead. i know you've got two factory power ports on the Uly, in a cigarette lighter configuration, and assume you didn't use one of these due to connector incompatability?

if so, and if you need some cables or adapters for heated gear, cell phone charger and the like, you might check out www.powerletproducts.com. i've been very happy with my purchases from them.

I just got off the phone with cycle-rama:

me: "You're doing a Blast head for me."
them: "Yes, it came out great! They were so screwed up that we had to grind half the head away. I mean they were really messed up, but they look pristine now."

I guess he wasn't impressed with my drilling ;)

AutoZone sells a very similar product to what Jerry pictured above. Comes with the same connections, only the charging unit itself has a cord that plugs into the wall. The unit can be placed up at eye level, which with the LED's that show you if your battery is good, Charging, or else, so that you can instantly see where you'll be at in 30 seconds when you hit the button to start. It sells for 24.95 and highly recommended on bike battery's.

Because of the amount of lead in a MC battery, the cold weather tends to zap them a lot faster than the larger car/truck type. Your typical MC tender charges at such a slow rate that destruction of the battery is ALMOST impossible. Plus it keeps the battery warm, as rubberdown stated earlier, turn your lights on for about 10 seconds before actually hitting the starter. This works for your automobiles also. The lights will cause enough reaction in the battery to heat things up a bit, causing the chemical reactions to take place and the battery will spurt forward enough juice to do its' job. This where the tender comes into play. The battery is already warm enough to do its' job, plus it has had a positive charge incoming, instead of a discharge state. All this granted that your charging system is in proper working order!

Jim, in perusing Powerlet's site again just now i see several warnings like the following:

Caution: Many cigar sockets are not capable of high current loads like heated clothing.

this was a concern i had with Madduck's Uly, but for the trip i went ahead and bought adapters anyway so that i could run my heated gear from the factory cigarette lighter sockets on his bike.

as it turned out i only used my heated gear for a short period during the ride, basically the morning of climbing Pike's Peak, and had no issues, but i wanted to mention all of this in light of my earlier "if you need some cables or adapters for heated gear..." comment.

just a heads up. : )

I quickly found out that the 5A fuse on the battery cable wouldn't drive the heated gear. Fortunately I discovered this in TN and not WY. I stuck a 25A fuse in there. : )

CHANGE IT BACK NOW!! Jim, your taking a chance on burning something else up in your wiring. The fuse is designed to be the weakest link in a wiring system rated for "X" amount of power. If you change the fuse to a higher rated amperage, then you essentially move that weakest point to somewhere else in that particular circuit. 8 times out of 10 it won't hurt anything. But being anywhere further than a couple hundred miles from home and have an important part of the electrics melt isn't fun.
A good story from AutoZone. Had a young boy come in the story asking about his car. Problem-it wouldn't shut off, that's right he couldn't turn the car OFF!, the headlights, interior lights, and dash lights would not work. Got to talking and it seems he had plugged his amplifiers' 'hot' wire directly into the fuse box. When it blew the fuse he kept increasing the amperage of the fuse, till eventually he came to the point at which he was at. He had changed the weakest point of that particular circuit, and MELTED parts of his wiring harness that junctioned with the fuse box. The best(worst) part was it was a brand new 2007 Pontiac Grand Am. Needless to say that wasn't covered under warranty!
