It was a very large gathering, that's for sure. I got there early since they were supposed to be leaving at 11am, here's a pic from around 1030AM:

They didn't actually leave until noon, and here's what it looked like just before leaving...

It was a nice little putt for about 20 miles or so, alot of people out in their yards waving, LOL. We ended up at a VFW next to Intel off of Sara, that had no parking so everyone had to park where ever they could, and then it was just your typical biker stuff, venders selling beer, leather, and chrome.

Hey CJ, Going to the hockey game is ok...

I didn't expect to see any Buells there. I know of at least two that headed out for 200+ ride that day.

These mass gaggles of bikes doing a short distance put-put ride are not my "cup of tea." I wonder if the air cooled bikes even got up to temperature...

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving Day!

Went to the movies the other night. Saw 3:10 to Yuma at the dollar theatre. I really liked it. While we were waiting, there was this real grizzled cowboy looking guy there with a HUGE mustache, went about six inches past the end of his chin, real bushy. Anyway, at one point in the movie, he's in one of the scenes and my wife wigged out because she recognized him.

Anyway, then it gets to that part where they're in the tunnels up in Jemez, and there's Mabel in the tent when Russell Crowe comes in trying to get her to help him get his handcuffs off. I thought she had lines, but you don't hear any in the final film. Either she never had any or they got edited out. Anyway, cool to see a friend in a movie.

When they were making that movie, they stayed at our hotel for like a week or so while they were doing those scenes up in Jemez. I met all those guys. Russell Crowe seemed cool to me. Christian Bale seemed like an ass. Luke Wilson, too. For some reason, Matthew McConaughy was also there even though I didn't see him in the movie. He was pretty cool.

So... what have all of you been doing now that it's cold?

I've been riding- just got back from Big Bend and three days of desert roosting. For those of you who knew her, Kris Stanhope, our Motorclothes manager passed away at home this morning due to complications with her struggle with cancer. If you knew her, think a good thought for her family.

I remember Kris...my condolences to her family and her work friends...

I was just up at the dealership yesterday. Dropped off the scg for the 1K service and those issues we discussed (Murrae)...parts are in. Hopefully, they can diagnose/fix the hesitation and airbox popping issue. It is extremely annoying to the wife (and to me when I ride it) and it seems to be getting worse.

I didn't know Mabel was in the movie... I'll have to go see it!

Anyone local 12 owners want a Drummer? Low mileage, perfect condition. Great deal at $250, but here is the kicker. I need your exhaust and cable in return and would have to do it tomorrow or Sunday. Call me at 453-3365 if interested.

Don't you actually have to sell Buells to get that? They've never had any when I've been in there and they definitely don't support them! So yeah! How did that happen???!!

That's exactly what I was thinking... Maybe they sell them without putting them on the showroom floor. Hmmmmm? Obviously clothing and accessories don't count because they never have any. ...and Buell events don't count because they never have any of those. Maybe Murrae could shed some light on what it really takes to get a Pegasus award.

Well, my brother in law is in the market for a bike, so I thought I'd show him some Buells. We only had a little bit of time, so we stopped by Thunderbird instead of driving all the way to SF. It's the first time I'd been in there in over a year. They had four Firebolts out front, all used. Only one 9, an 03, the rest were 12's, and I think they were all 06 or 07 models based on colors. They also had two Uly's out there, both used, yellow. They had three new Firebolts inside. No lightnings at all.

So this kid comes up to us seeing that we're looking at them. He's about 12 and his hair is in a mohawk and it's bright blue, the same color as his Buell work shirt. He's the salesman for the Buells. Says he's got a CityX and that he didn't know when they'd be getting any more S models in. I ask him how long he's been riding his Buell and he says like six months. I ask if he's ever heard of BadWeb and he obviously has not. So, right away, I have him pegged as a squid.

Here's the thing. I got the latest issue of Fuell and there is a cover story about some stunt team that Buell sponsors. All they do is go around all day and abuse motorcycles and set a bad example. I was pretty put off by it. The coolest thing about Buells is handling, riding mountain roads or on the track. Everyone I've run into on Buells have been mature riders, even the younger ones (mostly). If you start advertising to the squids, that's what you're going to get. It sickens me. I don't want to ride with them. I don't want to be affiliated with them in any way.

But that's how you get a Pegasus award. You hire a blue haired squid to sell stunt bikes to imbeciles with more money than brains. 'nuff said.

I have often wondered what the criteria is to get a Pegasus Award and am sure it is not based on sales alone, at least I hope not. Whenever I go to the local dealership, and if no one there knows me, I ask about any local Buell riding clubs. I have never received the right answer and one guy actually told me about BRAG and how it was like HOG (that was about two months ago). It is a safe bet that a lot of these guys do not know about the BadWeb or other Buell sites. I also ask if anyone rides a Buell and until recently no one did at the two dealerships in Colorado Springs. And the guy that did ride a Buell did not know about any local riding groups. My efforts to get the dealership to just mention our little group (I even gave them flyers and business cards to hand out) to people that purchase a Buell have failed.

If the dealerships (like mine) would put half the effort on Buells that they do on "official motorclothes" they would be really great Buell dealerships.

Hope to see you guys and gals at Gateway, CO in May...

Frank

I have to agree with CJ on the Fuell issue. I got mine a few days ago and was sickened by the stunter article and then the last page has a question about right side scoops. Abe's answer was way off base. Talk about being out of touch with your customer base. By the way, if you haven't guessed, I'm no longer a Bueller. I will lurk the site and would like to continue to ride with you guys if possible. You can always contact me on my cell at 453-3365 if I can help you with anything. I still have my ECMSpy cable and software if you need help with a TPS reset or tuning.

Keep the rubber side down.

It makes some sense about the right-side air scoop for low speed. I don't have the equipment to conduct airflow tests when the fan is on to see there is better flow over the fuel rail. I'm taking their word for it. At high speed, there can be little doubt that a right side scoop would improve forced cooling - the more air the better. At low speed, you could actually reduce airflow (suction) by having too big an intake area and thereby reducing the suction or rearward flow. The confined area is about controlling air flow. As for looks...the bike would look more symmetrical if it came with two scoops of the same size AND improve cooling at high speed. I would take Abe's word for it - especially if you spend lots of time in slow traffic.

Joel, Did you trade your Uly for something? Did you get anything different?

As for the stunt show coverage in FUELL... it is a growing "show sport" and torquey Buells happen to be well suited. It is nothing new that bike makers are trying to appeal to a wide audience out there. I have some level of respect for the bike handling skills required to perform these stunts. Frankly, I wish I had that level of comfort and skill. However, I don't and therefore I do not even attempt such things because I am conditioned that 1) I do not want to fall hard and get hurt; 2) I do not want to wreck any of my bikes. Now it takes some level of maturity to understand that even if you can do such stunts, you should not do them on the street. There are squids who will buy a Buell just for stunt BS and do it on the street...that's their call and they do give the rest of us a bad name.

By the way, have you all ever seen the stunt show video on the Buell Website? It has been there for years as a marketing tool. Have you ever seen the live show? Very impressive when done by professionals in a closed area.

Yes, I saw the video on the Buell site and had the same feelings then that I have now. I also saw the live show in Chick's parking lot a while back. Same same.

The thing is, there's nowhere for these kids to go do these stunts besides the streets. Even if they do them in a large mall parking area after hours, it's still the street. Who do you think is going to come scoop up the schmear when they wipe out?? Same cops, same firemen.

That's one more reason not to stunt. It brings unnecessary attention on the rest of us. My bike looks like that so in the narrow mind of officer hard-on, I must be a stunter too. Or because some knuckle head passes on a double yellow going too fast up Sandia, I must be lumped in with him and his shenanigans too. And on top of that, they thrash those perfectly good motorcycles for no other reason than it makes them cool... if they don't bite it.

The police SHOULD recognize the difference between "kids" playing and us "grown-ups" on sport bikes. "Kids" do not do these things alone, they congregate and make lots of noise, sometimes at odd hours of the day. They draw attention to themselves and deserve to be chastised accordingly. They do not seem to care about anyone but themselves. Public and private property is not respected. They deserve what they get in the way of LE attention. Most police know the difference...

The Sandia Crest "Road Racing Practice Course" is well known to all sport bike riders. The guys who got caught at the Crest that fateful Sunday serve as a warning to others. The police with the help of the press have put people on notice that this activity will not be tolerated. The citations and the publicity serve as punishment for the unlucky and deterrence for the rest.

Passing in a double yellow is common on the crest AND at many other places...an illegal and ticketable offense. I have seen many riders (young and old) who cross double yellows and exceed the posted speed limit...we all know them.

All of this irresponsible and illegal activity brings unwanted attention to motorcyclists. Loud pipes, speeding, stunting, and the resultant accidents and fatalities can and will be used against us all...by those who who want to legislate safety and don't give a damn about our favorite means of transport.

So, on the next Buell ride lets make sure we have stock pipes that meet EPA standards, stay within the posted speed limits, never pass in a no-passing zone, and enjoy the scenery...and proclaim our outstanding fuel mileage as helping reduce US dependency on foreign oil...

I think I'll go buy a cruiser(again) ;)

Well, I'm sure we all know people who've sped or crossed a double yellow. ;)

I know some people think that speed kills. I don't think that speed by itself does kill. You combine it with a bit of bad weather, bad road conditions, impaired rider, unknown road, etc., and you might get a kill out of it. If I speed, and I get caught (and I have), I'll pay the price. Usually a fine.

However, stunting does kill and maim. If I speed, I can still have a great deal of control over my bike. If I'm up on one wheel, how much control do I really have? If I wipe out while on that one wheel, even at relatively low speed, I could still be killed or maimed or whatever. And it's mean to the bike!

I'm not saying let's get cruisers. I'm saying let's not stunt and let's not endorse stunting.

Pick your places for going fast carefully-such as not in town, not in heavy traffic and not on roads that you're not familiar with. Use good common sense and if you really want to ride at 100% or higher, take it to a track day where it belongs. We're all guilty of speeding from time to time as well as passing on double yellows. In most other countries, if you flash your headlight, people move over and let you pass instead of giving you the finger and moving quickly is tolerated as long as you're not being stupid. It seems many of these issues are more complicated than they seem and involve our culture of transportation. Ride anywhere else on the planet and you'll see what I mean.
Whatever and where ever you ride, be smart and safe.

I agree Murrae. We all do some of these things and we need to weigh the risks every time. Ride smart and safe...I have my limits.

My call for a Buell "funeral procession" ride was all "tongue in cheek" sarcasm.

I'm not that offended by stunters as long as they keep it legal and that means doing it on "sanctioned" private property. The fact that Buells are shown doing stunts is ok with me. Its just another way to promote the brand.

Albuquerque or Santa Fe both have enough state owned pavement to occasionally cordon some off and have a "stunt event". A mall or dealership would do as well, or the track. I've seen stunters at rallies and it can be pretty interesting stuff. There was an organization doing pro competition for awhile, but I don't know if they're still around. They solved some of the skateboarding issues with skate parks- why not a stunt park?

Murrae,

How's your management feel about hosting the Buell stunt team? Could be part of a track day or some other Buell event...

Seems this state has plenty of room for such things. If there was a financial incentive, a "stunt park" and even an open road course event would be possible...

That could be cool- I'm currently working with Inside Pass to try and get them to come to the Southwest and put on an event that would include factory demo bikes and personnel, a track school and two track days. That might be a great thing to have there as well. I need to hear from them first and then talk to corporate about a location. It's a long shot, but I hope to know something by the end of the year. If that doesn't work out, we still have the two track days reserved for next year- maybe they would be able to come to0 one of those.
